I still want a light 4 ohm 'fairly' compact and fairly rugged but full sounding cabinet, but perhaps im asking too much.
Have you tried BareFaced? Just askin'...
But how good are the bass parts? Do you agree Verdine is one of the best?
Some of their stuff is a bit over-the-top, but I like most of his bass parts. My favourite line is the chorus part on "Saturday Nite". Very creative and interesting from a bass playing point of view, but just totally works!

Fender Musicmaster (only fender I've ever owned!). White. Incredibly neck-heavy but with a nice action. Single soap-bar pick-up. Bought second hand for seventy quid in around 1982. The amp was a JHS 20 watt (or so) practice combo that sounded awful and looked worse!! Got rid of both not long afterwards to be replaced with an Ibanez MC824 (recently sold on here) and a Trace Elliot 1110 combo, which was soon upgraded to the "classic" AH250/1048/1518 stack! That set-up did me for over twenty years (with the addition of the Status in 1986...).

That's just mental! Maybe their dep bassist was actually thirty feet tall and liked to have a good at-ear monitor...?
Seriously, man... save up for the Bergs. You'll end up there eventually anyway.
Talk about full circle!! Didn't MM20 have an AE410 a few weeks ago?

I ran pretty much the same set-up for years (but with the AH250) and occasionally had this problem in certain rooms. I kept knocking up the volume but still couldn't hear myself properly. Meanwhile, buildings were collapsing across the street...). My advice (in addition to what has already been said) would be have a look at your EQ settings. Too much bass? Feels great, but gets lost in the mix and ends up just booming around. Set your EQ much flatter, and add more mid-range. That way you can get audability and clarity with less actual volume. Of course, I am basing this on my EQ settings - yours may already be fine!!

Nice review Seb! It sounds good too - particularly on the Redding track.
I hate how much gas I get for amps and cabs!!!
Jeez man! Are you ever satisfied?!? You've got more gear than most music stores!!

It will certainly send its full power to them (well, half of it to each cab - so 275 watts each). But it depends what you mean by "drive" them? There should be plenty of volume....

What cab would be suitable for this head?
Conan replied to dirtylittleherbert's topic in Amps and Cabs
Cheers mate that makes things a little easier becasue the LG1000 is 2x500 watts I thought I would need a speaker with at least 500w of power. I think I'm gonna have to get an older amp I don't mind how it looks as long as the sound is good.
I'm fairly sure this means that it has two channels that can either be run separately (like two separate 500 watt amps) or "bridged" together to get a single-channel 1000 watt amp. -
If the Ampeg has speakon inputs you will need a speakon-speakon lead. If not, a speakon-jack will be what you are after. I just purchased a jack-speakon lead to connect my Ampeg to a BareFaced Compact.... OBBM makes great ones, but if you need one for this very evening then whatever you can get at a music shop will have to suffice!

Conan replied to dirtylittleherbert's topic in Amps and Cabs
Wouldn't each cab need to be at least 500w tho? Or would I see them go up in smoke?
The amp will only put out it's maximum power (1000 watts if it really is that powerful!) when it's running flat out. It's highly unlikely you will ever need such an amp running flat out so I wouldn't worry too much about trying to match the power handling of the cabs to the claimed output of the amp! Remember though that you will only get the max power if the total impedance of the cab/cabs is 4 ohms! Two 8 ohm cabs will give the desired result, as will one 4 ohm cab. If you run it through one 8 ohm cab you will "only" get (at a guess) around 600 watts. Still a LOT of power for a regular band setting, but again you will only get this amount of power if the amp runs flat out. Basically, what you have in your LG1000 is loads of headroom (power in reserve if you like). If you could stretch to a BareFaced Big One or Vintage, I suspect your sound would be awesome! Interestingly though, the Big One runs at SIX ohms, so you wouldn't quite get the full kilowatt (that sounds cool doesn't it?!), but the sensitivity of the cab would make it sound even louder! Confusing? You bet! As already stated, the choice of speaker cabs is a massive part of what your eventual "sound" will be - so try as many as you can and choose carefully (or, on the other hand, if you're like me - just buy the first one(s) that you like the look of and can afford!!). There are loads of great choices on here, and some brilliant prices. Good luck man! -

I've never played on myself, but from what I've heard of Vigiers on recordings I would put them in the category you are looking at... There are a few guys on here that own these French masterpieces, so I'm sure they will correct me if I'm wrong!!
I had my 'dream' bass built from a custom builder back in '05 and was completely dissappointed with the experience and end result - so much so that I offloaded the bass at a massive loss.
Care to name and shame? Or explain why it was so disappointing? Just interested. Quite a lot of guys on here talk about their "dream" basses as being the mutt's nuts, so would be interesting to hear another viewpoint!

A couple of Northern ones just in case....! http://www.frankusherguitars.co.uk/ http://www.jxgguitars.com/ Much smaller scale operations, so more flexible and easy to work with possibly?
Now soundwise if I'm using a 4x10 maybe i need to put the barefaced on it's side to stabilize the stack no?
Not necessarily. Your little Markbass amp on top will give the stack a kinda "pyramid" stylee if you place the Compact vertically... If you had an old-style "proper" sized amp then it might look silly that way and you would be right to lay the Compact sideways.... Your rig mate - your choice!!
-
Would you stack it on top of the Compact or vice versa. I sometimes seat on teh Compact and I'm about 13 and 1/2 stones.
I sat on a Compact, and I'm about four stones heavier than you!! I know that people have questioned their strength and build solidity but I can't see a problem with that at all. I'm significantly heavier than any bass cab - even an Ampeg - and there were no creaks or grumbles from the bareFaced!
Did it have ketchup on it?
Reggae reggae sauce - which looks even MORE like dried blood!!

Looks easy enough to me..... but then I can't read music! Shame, as my youngest daughter is called Elanor (Tolkein spelling!)...
