Not that I'm greedy or anything! There's a Fender bug around. I'm not sure it's actually bitten me yet, but it is circling in a slightly menacing way and eyeing me with intent... So just what is it about these old Fenders? Why is it that guys who flogged their Ps and Js ten years ago are now regretting it or trying to buy then back for three times as much? Is it the quality? In which case why did they sell them?! Or is it that as they get older (the basses that is!) their value (or at least their perceived value) increases?! The ones that are for sale at £1500 plus... are they all good? And the old "all original" chestnut. What exactly are you "allowed" to do to your bass before you ruin its "vintage" value? And is it jusr Fenders? Will my 1986 Status, for example, be worth thousands in ten years or so? And if not, why not? What I'm basically saying here is "is it worth me selling/trading a bass I love in order to finance the purchase of an (I suspect) inferior guitar that might be worth lots of money in the future?" Your thoughts. Give them to me!
Gets it done direct through work... saying that anyone can get an amp (not cab/combo) shipped in the UK for £7.99!
That's incredible! Who does that? I thought it was all done on weight, and some amps weigh an absolute TON! My Ampeg for example...

I've never owned a Fender (except the Musicman that I learned on thirty years ago!), but suddenly I find myself drawn to an older Jazz or Precision.... Two questions Paulie: 1. Do these instrruments really appreciate in value very much? 2. Would you be interested in a 1986 Status series II? One can but ask!!
This is basically it. But, those craving HUGE low end and quite a high treble extension would love it. They have apparently changed all the preset centres and the tubetone/compressor.
That makes sense, but still doesn't account for the fairly large price difference! Possibly cheaper to fly Rocco over and get him to set up your RH450 to his preferences?!

This is not an argument, it's a contradiction! No it isn't....
if you looked at the trade prices Vs the retail prices of musical intrument products across the board, you'd probably have a heart attack.
I won't then!
Good point - and not too easy for me to comment as I gave up gigging almost 20 years ago (and so, have largely forgotten). That said, the circuit in Alembics is much more powerful/versatile/complicated than any other I've used (and trust me, I've used a lot) and small tweaks can make a significant difference. As a result of the (relatively) complicated nature of the filter circuit and control layout, it's good to be able to see where you're up to (fairly quickly and clearly) if you want to dial-in a particular tone for a specific passage of music. Being 20 degrees out on the filters can be a big deal. You'll see SC himself doing a fair bit of messing about with filters and volumes in a live setting (and sometimes, he appears to look rather than just listen - I could be wrong of course).
I stand corrected! Good answer!
I love my IP112ER and EX112ER. They sound great. Not cheap tho.
That's an understatement! I've been looking at these out of interest and can't understand why they are so expensive. A wooden box, a single 12" speaker and a power amp. Where does the price come from? Don't these list at around fifteen hundred quid?
it's easy to see what you're doing (even in a gig setting)
I understand that. But in reality, how many times do you really need to look at the knobs on your bass to see what your settings are?

Well, it's looking increasingly like the band I have been trying to get off the ground for the last six months is going to disappear up it's own anus without so much as a gig played! So I guess I'm back in the market for a band! I've been playing for about 30 years and have played many different types of music - jazz/funk, blues, pop, heavy rock, prog... and am happy to do so again! My style is predominantly fingerstyle and quite aggressive, but I occasionally use a pick and can slap pretty well when called for... Previous band of any note - The Lounge Lizards (Newcastle-based blues band), which I left in 2006. Good gear and transport. I also offer backing vocals. I am not looking to make a profession out of this, as I already have a full-time job and a young family. Rehearsals once or twice a week and probably gigging no more than twice a month is about what I would expect. Based in Newcastle upon Tyne and not looking to travel very far (obviously gigs are different!) so would prefer North and South Tyneside, Newcastle or South Northumberland. I am not an age-fascist, but obviously if you are a band of 19 year olds you may want someone a bit younger than me! Thanks for taking the time to read this. Cheers, Geoff.
interesting idea - will the sound of a pa monitor be suitable as a bass cab? any idea the most suitable if such a thing exists??
Remember that many PA cabs/ monitors are designed for the bass drum to go through. If they can handle that, most things we do on bass should be OK. Anything with EV or JBL speakers in for example should be up to the task...

Beautiful! All except for those horrible cheap-looking plastic control knobs!
Alot of these popped up ebay a few months ago, might be worth searching those listings for more info
Tried that and couldn't find any!

Thanks for that! I like the tone, but I have found it a bit "quiet" compared to my Trace AH250... Very "smooth" though.
IMO any cab going for £179 new has to have major shortcuts somewhere. You cannot expect a decent bit of kit for that price.
Maybe not "decent", but it should still be fit for purpose. By the sound of that cab, the first time it was used in anger some of the speakers would have shaken themselves loose - whether they were one of the 50% actually working or not! You might expect shortcuts in the quality of the components, but they should still be assembled properly. £180 may be cheap for a brand new bass cab, but its still a substantial sum of money. As a customer you dserve better than that. Or that's what I think, anyway! -
As I understand it, all the power amp does is AMPLIFY the signal it receives from the pre-amp - so the pre-amp/bass output section sets the "tone" and the power amp makes it "louder" before feeding it to the speakers... So basically, the higher the quality of the components and design, the more chance you have of getting the sound of your bass/pre-amp out of your speakers. Why would a "bass" power amp be any better at this that a PA one?
