How loud do you need to be? How many guitarists do you have and what amps do they use? Are you playing with Keith Moon or Buddy Rich? Do you always have PA support?
Also: What bass(es) do you play? Is there a particular sound you strive for? Is weight/size/portability an issue? Size of budget? When you say "amp", do you mean the whole rig, or are you just looking for another amplifier to run through your existing Ashdown cabs? If you can use an amp for one gig a year, you can use it for 100 gigs a year.

Nope! Double-edged, but only one blade.
What a lovely looking bass as well.
One of these I believe... (but with four strings obviously...) https://www.public-p...ts/mi-bass/frog
The odd one or two that don't seem to be able to enter in to the community spirit are thankfully a minority, They just need to just 'let go' of their bee containing bonnet sometimes.
Ooooh! I'd be interested to know who you have in mind there...

Agreed. The bickering over claims and counter-claims is all very well, but as far as most users are concerned, how does this affect us in a "real world" playing situation?
...put the bass through the PA if you need more volume.
Fine in principle - but not all of us play in bands (or venues) that have a PA sufficiently robust to put the bass through. I know I don't.

Crikey - and I've been a member for 8 of those years! Happy birthday!
Steve Lawson... Everyone knows him and what he does, so there's no need here for a description.
Sorry - I've never heard of him.

I don't think it's ridiculous - but having two 2x10 cabs gives the added flexibility of being able to use one at a time when both are not needed. Also, remember that the Basschat membership is only a very small percentage of the bass players across the world, and even in the UK. A lot of our members prefer the vertically arranged 4x10 system, but an awful lot of bass players just use what they've always used - i.e. standard 4x10 cabs or 1x15s for "more bass"...
To me, being able to keep a solid groove in the pocket is the reason I started playing bass.
Me too. But a bass guitar is just a musical instrument - how people choose to use it is up to them. Life's rich tapestry and all that...

I heard/felt a groove there...although i got very bored after about a minute. The guy is capable of playing with far more taste and restraint: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CK2RWT8l7k
I would have thought that in a lot of typical gig venues without PA support, bass is going to be be fairly well heard (assuming you have enough power) because it's omnidirectional.
That's certainly my experience, as far as "bass" frequencies are concerned. However, I do find mid range to be rather more focused and therefore more susceptible to dispersion issues. It all depends on the sound you go for I suppose.
-
I didn't say that they weren't - simply that the manner in which the points were made seems excessively personal, hence my ad hominem reference. I stand by my comments.
Remember, 410s are flawed. 410s are flawed. 410s are flawed. 410s are flawed. May I introduce to you, my new 410.

Alex certainly hasn't done anything ground breaking in terms of cab design...

There's no ad hominem I feel sometimes that people on here are far too sensitive over gear at times.
Hmmmm.

IME, most people talk about dispersion from their own perspective - in other words, how well they can hear themselves on stage, not how well the audience can hear the bass. Our own experiences vary of course, but the vast majority of my gigs involve only the vocals going through the PA, and all the instruments relying on backline to be heard. I have used many different cabs, from a large range of different manufacturers, but definitely prefer the ones that allow me to hear myself better on stage. To date, the best ones in this respect have been made by Barefaced - a Big One and a Compact. The list of brands I have tried includes TKS, Bergantino, Genz Benz, Markbass, Ashdown, Ampeg, Trace Elliot, Gallien Krueger and Peavey. Not exhaustive, but pretty extensive.
-
Yes. It is the ad hominem aspects that increasingly grate...
-
Can we call a spade a spade here? Are you accusing Alex/Barefaced of lying? Or at least exaggerating? For those of us without a PhD in acoustics, what do those graphs actually mean in the "real world"? And this morning I was thinking how pleasant it was that a Barefaced thread had just fizzled out without locking, warnings or associated nastiness.
Separate volume - I guess it's so you can balance the volume output between two different configurations of cab.
Yeah, I get that. I just can't see many people ever needing or wanting to do that - especially as it means buying two amps (three if you want a spare/backup)...
-
That's great, Blue. In my experience, the bigger the gig, the easier it is - the small gigs where you can see the whites of their eyes make me more nervous, frankly. You deserve to be there. Relax and enjoy it. You'll be epic!
Exactly what I was going to say! It's been a while since I played to an audience of any size, but I prefer that to playing in front of so few people that you see them as individuals. Then you feel you have to make individual eye contact with each of them so none feel left out... horrible! It would be even better at night as you often can't see faces at all then! Good luck though

"With two amps together, connected through the Effects loop (Send from one to Return on the other), you can drive two 4 ohm cabinets, getting a separate volume control for each cabinet while using the EQ from the one you plug in to" What an odd suggestion! Why would anyone wish to do such a thing?
I found myself having numerous internal debates as to whether it's harder for someone to convincingly play a simple sounding groove in an odd time signature or complicated sounding sloppy slap tricks in 4/4...
Me too! Reading between the lines, I suspect that was the object of the exercise -
You boys are worrying me that I should just keep it
I regret selling (well, actually trading) mine. But at the time we were using a rehearsal space with really awkward stairs and parking was often a good way away. The sound was brilliant and the cab was lovely and light - just the width and the positioning of the handles made it very awkward for that room. Now I'm no longer in that band, but I doubt Wooks79 would let me have the cab back! Keep it!
