I have no time for lightweight stuff, heavy duty equipment for heavy duty music!!
Like it!!

AS far as pick players go, Jerry Peek is well worth a listen. There's not much of his stuff available on youtube, but he played with Steve Morse for a while and his picked/hammered solo on the track "Cruise Missile" is awesome!!
So,what do you like? What have you tried that you almost like? What sounds are you trying to avoid?
Hi Anders! What do I like? Tough one! There is so much new gear that I like the sound of (meaning that I like what I read), but I haven't actually tried ANY of it! I've had a few very kind offers from other Geordie Basschatters (cheers Bottom_endian and Warwickhunt!) to listen to and even try out their rigs, but the weather being what it is all of that is on hold! Thunderfunk sound awesome but way outta my league! I feel oddly drawn towards TC electronics.... and also BareFaced - but need to try out first. On the other hand, Ampeg ain't to bad to be starting with! Just need to get this band up and running so I can try it out at proper volumes! Sounds to avoid? Not many. I don't really do distorted, but I don't really like the excessively clean ("sterile") sounds either. My Status in particular has a very clean sound, so maybe needs a bit of "colouring up" from an amp/cab combination... I dunno! The more I think about it, the more the options paralysis (isnt that a great term?) sets in!!
Ultimate rigs require ultimate transport!
I think for the purposes of this thread we can assume that your ultimate rig also comes with a teleport unit and it also sets itself up at the gig... Dream large, dream large....
a stack of four vertically aligned DB112's.
BTW, how would that work in terms of impedance?
-
Money and transport no object... I'd have a Thunderfunk and a stack of four vertically aligned DB112's.
So basically what you're saying is that you would add another two cabs of the same type to your existing set-up!? It must be pretty cool to already own your "ultimate" rig! Looking forward to seeing and hearing it!!

As the title says! Bought about ten years ago for £549 from Sound Control in Newcastle. My first five-string... It plays well and has a good, clean tone, but its just not "my" tone! So rather that sit gathering dust under my bed (the guitar, not me!) I would far rather it went to someone who would use it! Comes in its original hard case. I think £180 would be about fair, don't you?!
I think we did give you some very helpful advice. 99% of people who suggested gear said, "Have a listen to ... " That's all we can do because you'll hear differently to the rest of us! Anyway, good luck in your search.
You're right. Sorry, I didn't mean it like that! THe advice was brilliant. What I meant was that I was hoping to be told what to get!!

This was my first "proper" bass and I have owned it since about 1983. It comes from the range made popular by Sting and Martin Kemp from Spandau Ballet (!). It was made as a fretted, passive guitar but I had it modified (by Howard Satterley, but I doubt if he'll remember as it was about 15 years ago!) to make it fretless and install active tone circuitry. As such, it is no longer 100% "original", but is a better intrument as a result! All other parts are as original, and it is in excellent condition for its age - no dings, but a small amount of well-earned buckle rash. Its tone is warm and "woody" and it is a joy to play. The body wood is mahogany, so it is quite heavy but sustains beautifully, The neck is maple and is thru-body. It comes in the same hard case that I bought it with, which I assume is original. There have been a few of these on ebay recently, and two sold at over £600. This really is a very nice looking and playing bass, and I will be sorry to see it go - but I have to invest in amplification!! I am looking for £325 for this rather collectable piece of eighties memorabilia, but am open to negotiation. Although a cash sale would be my preferred option, I would be prepared to trade depending on what you have to offer!
Bass Direct is great for checking these sorts of things out. Mark is also very knowledgable about bass gear and PA alike, so he will certainly be able to give you some no-nonsense advice about what would suit your style and your pocket. Mark
Thanks for the advice. Warwick is a bit far for me though! Never mind - I'll muddle on with the Ampegs for now and keep my eye on the amps&cabs for sale thread here! It's a real eye-opener just seeing what's available these days!!
Out of interest, what are you looking for?
http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...t=0&start=0 In other words - I'm not really sure, and open to advice! A couple of options that I have been thinking about (depending on finance considerations!) are the BareFaced Big One and the TC RH450. Not necessarily in tandem, as I quite like the idea of the 450 paired with the TC speakers in a "skinny tower of sound" style o' thing! Unless I can sell a couple of basses, I will probably be looking at second-hand - which seems to pretty much rule out the TC option as they are so new and nobody who has one wants to sell it!!
-
-
You are in an inviable position my friend! A terminal case of GAS coupled with deep pockets!! I'm dead jealous!! Yeah, TC RH450 is definitely on my list of amps to try.
-
A couple of weeks ago I started a thread asking for recommendations for amps/cabs. The input was very interesting but not massively helpful to me, as I was kind of hoping for everyone to say "ah yes, the answer to your dilemma is X..." or "get one of these!!". That answer was not forthcoming because everyone seems to have their own preference. Which is cool, but as I said, not all that helpful! So. If money were no object at all, what rig would you use? Or is the rig that you currently own your "ideal" system? Is there such a thing as "the Ultimate Bass Rig"??? Your thoughts. Give them to me!!
I don't agree. There seems to be a myth starting that light cabs compromise your tone.
I'm not sure it can be accurately described as a "myth" if some experienced players who have started on "traditional" gear, then moved to lightweight cabs, move back to the originals because they felt that the tone was better? I'm not saying I agree with them as I have no experience of lightweight cabs - but that's not to say that I disbelieve them either! The human ear is very subjective, so it's what each of us like as individuals that counts most I would have thought. Personally, I can't really be @rsed with all that trying stuff out as I have very limited time. I was hoping that there would be a unanimous "buy one of these!" response to my questions about amplification, but clearly that expectation was unrealistic and naive on my part! I've had some great advice on here, but I'm not sure I'm really any nearer to making a decision about what I want! So I guess I will be sticking with my Ampeg set-up for a while!

Does anyone have an address for him? Presumably Alex, if he doesn't return or pass on the cab soon, steps would have to be taken to recover the cab? Can you afford to lose one? That would also put the whole "on tour" scheme in jeopardy wouldn't it?

Stupidly Easy Tunes Which Are An Absolute Pleasure To Play
Conan replied to Hot Tub's topic in General Discussion
Has anyone mentioned "Why did you do it" by Stretch yet?? -
What's the status of this now? How long is the waiting list?
At least when we buy gear we're usually changing it. I'd rather frequently change my gear than continuously accumulate it like most guitarists seem to.
Hmmmmm. Maybe. But looking at the equipment lists of some BC members, I'm not so sure!

Its tempting to say that anyone who buys from a joker like this deserves all they get.... But I won't, coz it's not nice!
I'm currently using a barefaced big one. I'm sure you know what its like -it doesn't have a tweeter but has a 8" midrange speaker and 15" speaker. Any ideas how this would cope with distotion?
I may be confused, and they may have updated the spec, but I thought the Big One DID have a tweeter, and the midrange driver was 6"??
Nice tone on this video, anyone know what the backing track is ??
Tone is pure Louis Johnson!! Especially on the slapped section at the start... A little bit dead-sounding though - could be the strings?
