Like Conan said, it's not that I need to re-tune, it's making sure that I don't need to re-tune at the point when I have the opportunity to do so. After all, it does not harm and it's far better to make sure I'm in tune before we play a song than fixing the fact that I was out of tune afterwards.
You put it better than I did!
What did all of you guys used to do before we had tuners?
Tune to the guitar or, even better, keyboard. Difficult to do during a song mind...
Margin of being out of tune is usually tiny. Doesn't matter which bass or what it's made of, nothing ever seems to move much.
Exactly! But we only know this if we check! I may check at the end of a song if there will be a natural pause before the start of the next one, but nine times out of ten the tuning will still be fine and I don't need to change anything. But at least I know that!

Any famous guitarists good at playing bass?
There has been some interesting discussion on here - but there is some thing that I have noticed on here. You get a lot of hostility for holding an opinion. Take this comment here. That's just downright nasty. Deliberately trying to be confrontational. And that guy called Dad3353 up the page a bit. I've already blocked him for being downright rude in a previous post. This is a great forum, but there is a lot of rudeness going on for no particular reason. I first noticed it when I had some Barefaced gear. I'm happy for people to have opinions, but why be rude? is there something wrong with your own life where you need to project negativity. It's something that constantly crops up, in my opinion, ruining this forum.
"Good morning Miss Pot" said Mr Kettle. Don't you think, Jenny, that there is the tiniest chance that some of your own comments actually contribute to the rudeness and negativity? I realise that there is a generational thing going on here (after all, I am a secondary school teacher and have three kids myself - so I know how they talk and know that I will always feel differently to them on many things). The demographic of this forum is largely slanted towards middle aged men, and while many of us are very open-minded when it comes to music, some of your comments and threads just come across as trolling. If you don't intend that, maybe be a bit more careful with the wording? This is coming across as patronising, which is not my intention. You have made some very valuable contributions to this forum in the past, and I would like that to continue. Just maybe a bit of give and take, eh? Oh and by the way, I am still at a loss as to why you think my suggestion of Scott Gorham (a very "famous" guitarist) does not convince you? -
Bass Playing Listening Test - for my PhD research
Will we be privy to any results from this study..? It could be enlightening.
What if it turns out that we are all Clown-whores? -
My impression so far is that the S112 and the Two10 belong to the same 'family of sound'. <snip> then get a second S112.
The obvious question is: have you tried combining the two manufacturers? I ask mainly because I have run my BF Compact and TKS H115 together and I really like the combination

Bass Playing Listening Test - for my PhD research

Interesting - but rather repetitive. It also depends on what your own personal playing style is, and which songs you have played. For example, I always thought that the bass intro to Tool's Schism sounded really difficult. Then i sat down and learned it and realised that it was actually pretty straightforward. I used to play quite a lot of slap back in the eighties (when it was cool!), so I found the slap parts to sound OK, but I have never done any two-handed tapping so I thought the Billy Sheehan-type stuff sounded really hard... -

Your colours are a bit out! Instead of beige and blue I see red and green! Damn - does this mean I have become colourblind? -
So Carole Kaye starting out on guitar & moving to bass is OK but Sting doing the same thing isn't?
I'm not sure it's worth arguing... -
That's what I said, one for stage monitoring is ok... beyond that you would need the extra one. You're right about the greed 'though, although I wasn't acting on it here
Says the man who used to own FOUR of these cabs!!
If it was constantly going out of tune I would sell it and get a Status, my Bro has one and tunes it about once a year.
Yeah -and even then, only when you change strings!

I'm not convinced by any of the comments so far. Maybe Paul McCartney. Otherwise ...... pfffft!

Sorry. You didn't say that you were looking to be "convinced" - just asking for suggestions as you couldn't think of any. Maybe try being a bit more specific in your questioning if you wish for a specific answer. BTW, what would convince you? -
I have found a lot of these strings are not in tune when you buy them though.
Shoddy workmanship and the "it's all about me" attitude, which is all too prevalent these days sadly. I blame Brexit and Donald Trump. And immigrants of course.
Whether you can hear a tuning discrepancy or not, checking tuning at regular intervals, when appropriate, is entirely acceptable and professional... providing it's discreet and doesn't interfere with the show.
Exactly my view. I'd rather not wait until I (or someone else) can hear something wrong...
Wow not heard that song before. Nice one. Dave
It is, isn't it? -
On an average gig down the dog and duck, I personally do a tuning check after each number. I have a tuner on the floor which is on permanently. A quick step on the mute of another pedal and its all over in 3-5 secs max. If a tune starts with, for example, a long keys intro I will take a bit more time but my aim is to stay in tune as much as possible. New strings or old strings, i treat the tuning the same and constantly check it.
Me too Depends on the bass though. My J basses can be a bit unstable, but I had a Status series II for years, and I only had to tune it about once a year!!

Neil Murray Bass Masterclass - Stourport - Tuesday May 2nd 2017
Conan replied to skankdelvar's topic in General Discussion
Why do I always find out about cool things after they've happened? Not that I would have been able to get there on a school night mind... I hope there will be more, and in other parts of the UK -
Odd. I think it depends on which one is played first. If the 432 comes first, and my ear gets "tuned in" to that, then the 440 sounds slightly rushed and insistent. Possibly slightly weedy too... If the 440 starts, then the 432 sounds kind of melancholy, but also a bit more full. It is difficult to describe in words. But I have a tape deck that causes similar effects...
