I have never had any use for any of the features you list. Most cabs have two speakon connectors, so it matters not that the amp only has one output as cabs can be linked if required. I have never used an effects loop or send/return facility, and have never needed to switch voltage. 350W would be enough output with sensible EQ settings and a cab with decent sensitivity. Like the OP, I am struggling to see where the extra money is being spent! So is the TH350 a massive bargain or is the TH500 a huge rip-off?

Having a second speakon socket was an option in gen 2. I don't think it was on gen 1. I've used and owned both and the differences seem largely cosmetic. If there are differences internally then they are not hugely apparent.. Both are great cabs and can be picked up now for around the £300 mark, which makes them phenomenal value

For what you say you want, I would say that a used barefaced Compact (generation 2 with the 15" speaker) would suit you well. Around £300, and massive bang-for-buck Or Chris_b's suggestion

Cheap also tends to be heavy. You need to decide which part of the equation is most important to you. Do you always rehearse in the same place? If so, and it is secure, you could consider buying a heavier (and therefore cheaper) setup and simply leaving it at the rehearsal venue.

Only one amp head - a Markbass LM2. Looking at how many others have, and some of the reasons, I'm starting to think that a spare amp in case of problems might be wise! In which case I would get another LM2 as I like it and having a spare that I know how to use would be sensible! Cabs - one Barefaced Compact (gen 2) and one TKS H115. For most gigs and rehearsals the Compact is more than loud enough and an easy one-handed carry. But sometimes it is fun to use both...

The vintage market is strange, and is massively influenced by demand. Some seemingly ordinary instruments command incredible prices, while some beauties struggle to sell. It can be hard to predict. Significant birthdays make people do silly things (or at least impulsive things that seem silly to others!).

Not really. I've never found a bass where [b][i]everything[/i][/b] was perfect. Plenty with [b][i]some[/i][/b] outstanding features, but then always something else that made me move on... The quest continues!

Anyone with only a passing interest in Rush is far more likely to associate him with Fender Jazz basses or Rickenbackers (IMO of course!). For the record, the tone Geddy got from his Wal represents my least favourite chapter of Rush's history (although, to be fair, a lot of that is to do with the way those albums were recorded) - although Power Windows is pretty damned good
