1. I'm just struggling to be an upright bass player...
2.
One that requires the features and spec of the TH500.
Sorry, but I must play a low level of gigs. I have never had any use for any of the features you list. Most cabs have two speakon connectors, so it matters not that the amp only has one output as cabs can be linked if required. I have never used an effects loop or send/return facility, and have never needed to switch voltage. 350W would be enough output with sensible EQ settings and a cab with decent sensitivity. Like the OP, I am struggling to see where the extra money is being spent! So is the TH350 a massive bargain or is the TH500 a huge rip-off?
3. You might get more interest if you post your requirements in this section... http://basschat.co.uk/forum/83-bassists-wanted/
4. Oh right! So there is no such thing as a "Gen 2 Compact" then?
5.
The TH500 is aimed at a higher level of gigging than the TH350 .
What exactly is a "higher level of gigging"?
6.
But surely you need 15s to get the really low bass notes?
Yeah, but tens and twelves have a faster response and are better for slap...
7. Having a second speakon socket was an option in gen 2. I don't think it was on gen 1. I've used and owned both and the differences seem largely cosmetic. If there are differences internally then they are not hugely apparent.. Both are great cabs and can be picked up now for around the £300 mark, which makes them phenomenal value
8. Have a look at some of the TKS range. I just thought I'd mention them before Wateroftyne did...
9.
If you could invite your dream band or super group of your making to dinner who would you invite and why? Invite for the quality of chat, stories and maybe an after dinner jam session! Mine would be: Singer - Eddie Vedder Bass - Geddy Lee Drums - Dave Grohl Guitar 1: Paul Gilbert Guitar 2: Jack White
Geddy Lee would also be appointed head wine waiter
10.
Geddy's Wal tone is one of the worst bass sounds I'ver ever heard. Bloody awful, sounds like rubber bands stretched over a shoe box.
From Rush.com's "rig rundown" section, 1989: The colour-coding apparently helped him when he was breaking in a new ARP synthesiser and bass pedal arrangement.
11. For what you say you want, I would say that a used barefaced Compact (generation 2 with the 15" speaker) would suit you well. Around £300, and massive bang-for-buck Or Chris_b's suggestion
12. Cheap also tends to be heavy. You need to decide which part of the equation is most important to you. Do you always rehearse in the same place? If so, and it is secure, you could consider buying a heavier (and therefore cheaper) setup and simply leaving it at the rehearsal venue.
13. Only one amp head - a Markbass LM2. Looking at how many others have, and some of the reasons, I'm starting to think that a spare amp in case of problems might be wise! In which case I would get another LM2 as I like it and having a spare that I know how to use would be sensible! Cabs - one Barefaced Compact (gen 2) and one TKS H115. For most gigs and rehearsals the Compact is more than loud enough and an easy one-handed carry. But sometimes it is fun to use both...
Also, this year might be a good time to sell, as it's someone's Y.O.B. 40th birthday bass Obviously, in 2027, it should be worth more - as that's a 50th birthday YOB for someone
Very good points! The vintage market is strange, and is massively influenced by demand. Some seemingly ordinary instruments command incredible prices, while some beauties struggle to sell. It can be hard to predict. Significant birthdays make people do silly things (or at least impulsive things that seem silly to others!).
15. Not really. I've never found a bass where everything was perfect. Plenty with some outstanding features, but then always something else that made me move on... The quest continues!
16.
Well, I think Wal and I think/hear Geddy.
Me too, but that's because I'm a massive fan of Geddy and his playing/style/basses, not a Wal afficionado. Anyone with only a passing interest in Rush is far more likely to associate him with Fender Jazz basses or Rickenbackers (IMO of course!). For the record, the tone Geddy got from his Wal represents my least favourite chapter of Rush's history (although, to be fair, a lot of that is to do with the way those albums were recorded) - although Power Windows is pretty damned good
17. I actually thought I was getting reasonably OK at this. Then at band rehearsal yesterday we tried to play this song... Back to the bloody drawing board All hail Bruce Foxton Except when he himself makes a bit of a mess of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dktlq3-gNvk
18. Fender Roscoe Becks? Certainly everyone who tries to sell one is convinced that this will be the case...
19.
nice one, cool bass lines too...
The first one, Kurtis Blow, is probably more Go-go than hip-hop. In fact the backing band (at least in the video) is the mighty Troublefunk
20. Glasgow sold out! Are they only doing the two gigs over here?
21.
I see what you mean! (I could be wrong but) Compared to a fender jazz say, I'm sure rickenbackers are slightly shorter in scale (33" I think), and a radius of 10". So not drastically flatter, but flatter nevertheless. Maybe these have something to do with it.
The action looks very similar on his Jazz basses!
22. Beautiful! That finish is astounding...
23.
... in my experience there always seemed to be one person in the bands I've been in that ends up pissing me and most the others off. I take so much and then walk, always got on well with the other band members. So unless an opportunity to join a post punk/80's alternative band, my kind of music, which is unlikely, I'm going to carry on playing with myself
Totally this! So I left the band and formed my own covers band doing exactly this type of material!. It's been a slow and frustrating process, but, three rehearsals in, things are starting to take shape. I'm really enjoying returning to my teens and twenties to look up material for the band too
24. Dream come true for Geddy? Although the information in the article is contradictory regarding his participation... still, if Anderson says he will be joining them then that sounds pretty certain
