I'm sure Blue will have an opinion on this...

Bass > Markbass LM2 > Barefaced G2 Compact and/or TKS H115 (depending on size of venue and how much carrying I can be arsed to do!). Behringer BDI21 for some songs, and a Korg Pitchblack tuner - both always in the signal path.
There is a 'sense' of community, no doubt. If you look around the various sections in BC you'll see a lot of the same names. Some more prominent in some sections than others, but if you're around a little, yes, you get that sense. However, the marketplace is different. While many of those are 'regulars', there's quite a few users that seem to only contribute in that section. I just don't feel the same degree of 'community' with any of them. In other words... I would do a better deal for a 'mate' as you put it, or someone I have some sense of 'affinity' with... but I'm not that inclined to do a deal with someone whose presence in the world was only known to me from answering to my for-sale ad. Even within the community... it depends on how much you need the cash. If I'm selling because you just don't want an item, I'm more likely to set a good price so that it goes fast, or open to trades where I may not be getting the best deal but I get something else I fancy. After all I've also been on the positive side of trades sometimes too. But if you are selling because you really need some cash injection... why would you not sell for the price something is worth? I think we should see the 'good deals' within BC as something to be happy about, instead we seem to take it for granted so that we feel bad about standard trading practices. That's not quite right. Just like it's not right, in my opinion, to worry so much about what others do with their stuff, like selling, and the prices they ask for. It has a bad whiff of jealousy however I look at it. The sense of community is not damaged if some people buy and sale for profit (and I'd buy from anyone who has what I want at a price I'm prepared to pay, and I don't care how much they paid - or do you just care when they made a profit? How about when they make a loss? Do you offer to pay them extra because hey, we're the BC community? ) - the sense of community is formed outside the trading, mostly, and I don't see that being affected. It is affected, however, if we start to mind too much other people's business. This is an internet forum, open to the public (with everything that this entails, good and bad), not a cult.
I was going to post something in this thread, but Jose's post here absolutely nails what I would have said. Top post sir! I had a similar experience to the OP a few months ago when I sold my beloved (so I thought!) Status series II on here. A few days later it turns up for sale again (having already changed hands twice) for several hundred pounds more than i sold it for. I miffed me for a little while, but, as others have said, I was happy with the price I got for it so easier to live and let live. Equally, the "community spirit" on here can be a double-edged sword. Some have felt it's wrath and it's not a pleasant sight. Mates-rates for genuine friends and aquaintances is cool - but just because someone is a member on here (and how many thousands are there?) does not entitle them to a price reduction IMV. Having been caught up in the dilemma of the half-price Genz Benz 212 cabs a couple of years ago, I tend to tread very carefully now when it comes to profit vs fair asking price...

A couple of years ago I had a CIJ Geddy Lee and MIM standard Jazz bass. I tried swapping the bridges (Badass II on the Geddy, BBOT on the MIM), and the necks over. To my ears, there was no noticeable difference in tone, volume, sustain or anything else (although the Geddy looked really smart with the rosewood fingerboard!).
Ok, from what I remember . . . . Quotes like 'you can't beat the laws of Physics',
Physics has lots of laws. Sound reproduction has a lot of variables. In my experience, a single BF cab can be as loud (if not louder) than a decent* 4x10 and usually with a better sound and dispersion. It's also about that personal version of compromise. BF cabs are extremely light. Some people equate weight with quality. Try one first before judging (or allowing yourself to be influenced by the judgement of others - including me!). * "Decent" meaning stuff like Trace Elliot, Ampeg, Ashdown, Eden, SWR, Markbass and such. Top brands like Aguilar, Vanderkley, TKS and Bergantino generally bring something else to the table...
lucky spot, need pics when it arrives
Oh yes indeed! Even though I personally prefer the pearl inlays, I love the black too - and it will remind me of my three lovely Geddies that I stupidly sold...
Could you recommend any records that has that P style tone but you know to have actually been a Jazz style bass?
Not really, sorry. Jonas Reingold*, for example, uses a J that sounds less typical because he slightly favours the neck pickup, as does Geddy Lee. But I am basing my thoughts on my own experiences. For example, although my band play predominantly our own material, we have a few covers. Two of them are the Stranglers' Hanging Around and Here comes your man by Pixies. I used to swap basses (from my J to my P) for these two tracks, but after a while i found that I could get nearly the same effect by using only the neck pickup on the J. The key word , of course, is nearly - and it really depends on you personally whether you are prepared to accept that. IMO of course! *An example of JR's playing... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lhyJVEtiN4
some people claim you can get a P tone out a jazz bass if you use certain settings on the knobs. It's not possible at all, it doesn't sound anything like a P. I bought a jazz based on this, thinking I could get the P tone plus other tones. I'm now having to buy a P because that tone is not possible from a jazz.
Well, I respectfully disagree. In a loud and busy band mix, the difference is (to my ears) barely perceptible. At home, or in a studio, maybe - but even then it depends on the individual bass. Not all Js sound the same (even Fenders) and neither do all Ps. I have a J and a P, but rather than continually swap basses during a set (for some songs I favour a P bass sound) I stick to the J and use the neck pickup in isolation to get a decent approximation of a P sound. Obviously though it doesn't feel like a P, and I wonder if that is part of the reason why some people say that one can never sound like the other?
Basschat is, obviously, populated by bass players,
Well, certainly we all play bass - but I would question whether we are all "bass players", as the responses to this thread show. Bass is the only instrument I can play with any skill, so I concentrate on that. It is also my favourite instrument, and the one I predominantly listen to in music. So I guess that makes me a bass player!
Set lists are just a starting point. Be flexible and just go with what feels right on the night.
To an extent, yes - but as the person who does the setlists for my band, you have to be aware of other factors like changing instruments, different tunings, effects settings, switching from fingers to pick (and finding a bloody pick!), etc... I hate it when singers suddenly decide to "go with the flow" - especially when they have limited ability to read an audience anyway. Grrrr!. Rant over
Whats the Lm250 blackline like guys? I had a lm2 running through a 8ohm cab, and it was great. Would i get the same kinda output with the 250?
The power output of the amp should be about the same, as a 500W head into 8 ohms will deliver about half of it's maximum rating, and should be similar to a 250W head at 4 ohms - but a lot will depend on the frequency response (and real impedance) of the cab. Not having used either Eden or Markbass cabs i couldn't comment on how they will actually handle that output...

Very nice rig! I looked at buying those cabs twice - when McNach was selling them and again when Karl was moving them on. You got a great price on a great pair of cabs there! -
I find the tone control on my jazz bass does very little. Darkens the sound ever so slightly. Should it be doing more? Difficult... top five as in most influential? Favourite players or best from a technical point of view? I could do three lists in that case! Assuming it is a combination of favourites (with respect to tone, note choices and style) and most influential... and in no particular order: Geddy Lee Jean-Jacques Burnel Bruce Thomas Tony Wall Mark King Bruce Foxton (yes, I know that's 6!). I am very much a child of the late seventies/early eighties!

My "main" bass only cost £120 brand new, and less than £250 with all the mods i made to it. I would have no problem playing any gig with it as it is cheap enough to replace, but also good enough to be proud of. A win-win really! It is (based on) a J&D "Vintage 1975" J bass.
