I'd have thought that changing the STRINGS would have far more of an effect - especially if you put roundwounds on (assuming that you don't like the tone of flats of course, but you wouldn't be asking about changing pickups if you liked the sound you currently get!).
-
If you can afford them (they ain't cheap - even second-hand) then Barefaced should definitely be on your "to-try" list They can be real game-changers.

No shortage of low end on my LM2! In fact it has too much for what I need so the bass control is usually at just past 12 o'clock! Sounds relatively "warm" too (to my ears).
...you definitely don't want to be scooping your mids in a live situation as you will not be heard.
In most cases I'd agree, but it depends on the band. In my band there is no keys, but there are two guitars - their owners use very clean, clear "jangly" tones and so the bass has a pretty big sonic space. Even with some mid-cut the bass comes through well. It should be used judiciously though, as you say.

(Belated) NAD - Peavey 400 Series Mark IV Head
Conan replied to Jono Bolton's topic in Amps and Cabs
I always wanted one of these... loved the tone whenever I used one (or at least i think I did, it was about 30 years ago!). -
I like the VPF as I sometimes like to cut the midrange without adjusting the core tone... but I find no real use for the VLE. Why would anyone want to sound all dull and thumpy?
i'll be there, will there be name badges this time? Matt
Good idea! With BC user names as well as "real" names
The BB2 will go much louder than any other 112 cab, including the Vanderkley. As Barefaced cabs are very good at putting out what you put in I'd suggest you could check your tone settings or check the cab by trying a different amp.
This ^ except that I would edit it to say that most BF cabs are very good at putting out what you put in. Some are designed to be coloured Some amps just don't "work" with some cabs. I tried a few different ones with my BF Big One so i learned that the hard way...
I would like to inform you that I will be becoming a dealer for Adrian's basses. I have seen people being stoned for less on this Forum
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrzMhU_4m-g
It's not pot luck if the cabs were designed to work together and many of them are!!
Ah, but were they really "designed" to work together, or do the manufacturers just tell us that so that we'll buy them?
Just sounds to me his mids are boosted to much combined with any bass with its pu near the bridge sounds to me like a recipe for clank and harsh tone. Surely adding lows will help balance this?
Cutting some of the troublesome high mids would make more sense I think. Much more sensible to get rid of what is causing the problem than try to mask it by adding something else IMO/IME
There's a little bit of nonsense on Basschat about all this. A couple of designers on here selling their designs have made some broad statements which are then repeated by fans who love their products but without the deeper understanding of those who made the original statements.
Surely not?! On Basschat????

Another predictable vote for Heroes... and The Bewlay Brothers - I just love love the feel and atmosphere of that one (and indeed the whole of Hunky Dory).
If I ordered a bass finished in Burgundy Mist & that turned up I'd be VERY pissed off.
Yeah - even allowing for the colour not photographing well, that's not even close to the Fender Burgundy Mist is it? Not a bad colour in itself, but not exactly what it says on the tin
I might, if I can sell some stuff. Got a custom Jake coming soon, heard back from Adrian today, it's getting painted this week and set up next week, here's hoping I can get it shipped before NAMM, if not it'll be the last week of January, early February it looks like before I get it.
Have a word with Michael. He may be good enough to give you a short trial, like he did for me!
Believe me, I am tempted to buy it!
Do it! It's a great bass I've borrowed it from Michael and used it at band practice last night. It plays beautifully and sounds wonderful - really rich but also quite growly. Lots of tonal options due to the pickup combination.. The neck is absolutely fantastic too - so playable that it almost feels like a short scale. Highly recommended - and it has clarified my thought processes that I need a Maruszczyk Elwood in my life!

Oh well - in for a penny and all that!

One of these - http://www.dv247.com/guitars/jack-and-danny-yc-jb-4-string-bass-guitar-3-tone-sunburst--200786 I have a surf green one and my son has one in black. Mine has been modded a bit (more just because I fancied it than it being necessary) but his is completely standard. Both play brilliantly and sound good too. A few little issues (slightly sharp fret ends and buzz from the D string due to the low break angle) but easy fixes and not worth complaining about at this price point. I have gigged and recorded with mine and it is my go-to bass at the moment. Thoroughly recommended!
I shall probably buy one of these items so that when someone asks me 'What bass is that?' I shall be able to reply 'It's a frog', opening up all sorts of possibilities for comedic misunderstandings, amphibian puns and whatnot.
Careful! There are lines that need to be toad here...

I really like the look of this particular Elwood... although for "Burgundy Mist" it looks a wee bit pink to me. And I'd like it better with a maple fingerboard with pearl blocks... I may well be ordering something similar from Maruszczyk in the next few months (when funds allow) - but their prices are incredible when you look at the specs and quality of the hardware. With the Euro/£ conversion rate being what it is at the moment you can get a bespoke instrument for around the price of a MIM Fender!!

The Next Generation Of Players To Inspire.....?
Conan replied to spongebob's topic in General Discussion
I guess that anyone who has a Fender or Squier signature bass could be regarded as quite influential to the younger end of the playing spectrum. To name a few: Matt Freeman, Troy Sanders, Mark Hoppus, Mike Dirnt, Nate Mendel, Mikey Way, Pete Wentz, Eva Gardner... (I admit to not knowing who all of them are myself).
