How well do you think that the Jack and Danny basses would play after a full professional fret dress, new professionally cut nut, and full setup? Compared to say a USA Fender?
Difficult to say really. I've made some mods to my J&Ds (one is actually my son's) but none have been to the neck. Some owners complain about the sharp fret ends (which I can understand, but it doesn't really bother me!). If you have a suitable file, and the skill and patience to use it, then go for it - it will improve the playabilty I assume. I have no issues with the nut either - it does the job. In fact, the neck is the outstanding feature on these basses IMO. Things I did change though. Pickups. Not because I disliked the original ones, I didn't - they sounded good (if slightly microphonic) but the bridge pickup failed and I couldn't see the point of sending a £100 bass all the way back to the stockist for repair/replacement. So they (DV247) did a partial refund to cover the cost of the new pickups (Toneriders) that I replaced the stock ones with. I fitted them myself, along with a wiring loom from our own KiOgon. I replaced the bridge with a Fender MIM version from a P bass as the stock one was a little "sharp" and I use quite a lot of palm-muting. Again, nothing really "wrong" with the stock item. The original string retainer only holds down the D and G strings (like the Fender version) but I found the break angle on the A string was too small, so I replaced the stock one with a 3-string Hipshot retainer. Big improvement! I also took the opportunity to get the headstock painted in the same Surf Green as the body, and fit a custom-made scratchplate in purple tortoiseshell. Highly tasteless! http://basschat.co.u..._1#entry2813209 It is still my main gigging and recording bass, and even with the various changes/upgrades has cost me less than £200 I've not owned a USA fender (yet!) but I've had a number of MIM and CIJ versions. I've sold most of them and kept the J&D. I think that says it all really

Kev just bought my (well, his now) Mayones Jabba bass. From start to finish the deal was painless - fast payment and clear communications. A top Basschatter and highly recommended. Enjoy the bass Kev!
When I see questions like this, I wonder what the sensibility is of spending £100 on a bass (e.g. a Harley Benton '75 Jazz or J&B Brothers Jazz, maybe Aria bass etc. and then spending £100 on a really good setup including full fret dress. Would that give something more playable than a new £200 bass?
I have bought two Jack and Danny Jazz basses. Both were around £100-110. They look great, they play great and they sound great. As long as you can do a basic set-up yourself (intonation and string heights) then you can have a very playable, giggable (and recordable!) bass for the price of a set of pickups. Highly recommended. http://www.dv247.com/guitars/jack-and-danny-yc-jb-4-string-bass-guitar-3-tone-sunburst--200786 That said, a second-hand Yamaha would be a very wise buy too. Or Ibanez, some great value well-made basses in their ranges too. So much choice for so little cash!
Are the bodies on these smaller than a Fender JB?
I haven't measured it or anything, but I would say that it is slightly smaller, yes. Not much though (I think the perspective in the photo above exaggerates any differences). It does seem to balance better though. I suppose with the neck being longer it projects further into the body of the bass - which helps with balance. It's certainly not a small-bodied bass like some of the Warwicks - but I would say it is a bit smaller and somehow more "petite" than the J bass. I have a couple of other J basses at home, so I could take some more pics if you were interested? Edit - just got home and had a look. The total size is just about identical, but the lower horn on the Jabba is much more deeply cut - allowing easy access to the dusty end of the two octave neck.

Is that the MIM version? IME the routing on the Japanese ones is immaculate and the bass looks great without a scratchplate...

I see that Scott already has a Fender Geddy Lee Jazz bass in his signature... it only arrived with him (from me) this afternoon! It is good to see that he is as prompt and efficient in updating his signature as he is at making payment and communication! Top deal and a proper Basschatter. Highly recommended

Lovely! That looks like a very wide neck... although it may all be down to colour and perspective! Did you get it for Mr Potatohead? He looks like he's missing one...
Interesting thread... A or B Again, tweeters irrelevant to my usage.
Argh! One way the shapes mismatch and the other way the speakers and badges mismatch!! I never though of myself as particularly OCD, but either of those arrangements would do my head in!
Its a bit of a circular augment though, by the same token the difference between 250 and 125 is also "bugger all" ditto for 125 and 62.5 - at some point the "bugger all"s accumulate to something significant otherwise we'd all be a 50w amp. The "bugger all" between 250 and 500 might, depending on circumstances, just be the one that crosses the line between loud enough and not loud enough.
Top post!
For heaven's sake... I've waited years for a video of this tune, and... it sounds great, but the lighting is cack. What a missed opportunity.
Geddy's backline looks like an early seventies Ampeg catalogue!!
I agree also I think the EMG pups will put a lot of Jazz bass purists off, personally I love active basses so many more options than a passive GLWTS mate
The controls are still passive VVT. EMGs are only "active" in that they have an extremely low output (which makes them so quiet to use and beloved of studio engineers...). The battery powers a small preamp that boosts the pickup output to something resembling standard passive pickups. It certainly doesn't sound like an active bass and you can't boost either bass or treble... Still sounds lovely though
I have recently spoken to someone who found out after leaving it for commission sale at the gallery that his GL Jazz didn't sell because the scratch plate was wrong (how long does it take to change a scratchplate.??). Looks like the GL buyer is picky about originality i suppose.
Good point! Although this one comes with the original white SP in addition to the black one which I prefer! Maybe I should put the white one back on and take some more photos...
Very difficult market I suspect - not too long ago, this might have flown out - maybe the mods are a factor? Still, a very desirable bass (to me at least)
Yes, you might have a point about the mods - although the pickups can be easily swapped out. When I had the routing done for the battery cavity, I never thought I might be in a financial situation that would necessitate selling gear...
