But what does the word "fat" mean? For myself I'm looking for a bassy pup with an element of gravel in the guts, but not a "clank".
It's interesting how we all use slightly different words to describe sound! I think I know what "fat" means (usually kind of full and rounded with quite an accentuation in the low mids), but I have no idea what "gravel in the guts" would mean!! Or "clank"!

NOW £550 I never thought I'd sell this bass, but financial issues make it necessary... It is black with matching headstock. It is in very good condition (one or two minor dings and scratches). It has been modded (by a previous owner) by the addition of a series/parallel switch, which gives extra tonal options. It really sings due to the wood, construction and Delano pickups It has a lovely low action and plays beautifully. The build quality is simply outstanding (way better than many Fenders I have played) and it balances perfectly. This bass just oozes quality... http://www.mayones.c...a/jabba_classic The specs are as follows: - Alder body - One piece maple neck. - Maple fingerboard - Hipshot A style bridge, brass, adjustable string spacing (19mm to 21mm). - Schaller tuners. - 42mm nut width - 20" fingerboard radius - 34.25" scale length - Delano JMVC 4 FE/M2 pickups - Electronics vol/vol/tone, w/ series/parallel switch. - 24 jumbo frets. - Weight is 9lbs 3oz. The parts alone are worth several hundred quid! I am happy to take more photos if anyone is interested in something in particular, just let me know by PM. A Fender padded gigbag can be included for postage purposes (at extra cost). Shipping within the UK is included in the price (at buyer's risk of course). I am happy to post wider afield, but the extra cost will have to be absorbed by the purchaser. No trades please (unless they involve at least £200 in my direction) as I need the cash! I never thought I'd sell this bass, but financial issues make it necessary... It is black. It was "crafted" in Japan. The serial number dates it to 2007/8. It has the awesome slim neck that makes these basses so sought-after. It is in good to very good condition (one or two minor dings and scratches). Weight is 9lb 8oz. It is completely standard, except for the addition of a set of active EMG pickups (with a battery compartment very neatly rear-mounted by the Bass Doc). Tonally, it is very smooth and classy - but may not "growl" in the way that standard Geddies are supposed to... It has a lovely low action and plays beautifully. I've owned three of these basses, and this is the best. It comes with/in a Fender padded gigbag and includes a spare scratchplate (the original white one) as well as the black one it is currently wearing. Shipping within the UK is included in the price. I am happy to post wider afield, but the extra cost will have to be absorbed by the purchaser. My basschat feedback is here - http://basschat.co.u...page__hl__conan No trades thanks - unless it involves at least £400 in my direction! Maybe they should use some sort of coating on the cabs instead? A textured paint of some description.... Just thinking out loud here
I've noticed that when people have paid for tickets, they are usually respectful of the music and are quiet. This allows music at relatively low volume to be heard.
Then your experiences are very different to mine. Not wrong, just different!

I used to own one of these (maybe even this one - I sold it to a guy in Ireland about five years ago) and I liked it a lot. Very warm and smooth sounding (to my ears) and certainly no problems with volume. It depends what you are asking it to do, of course! It is a heavy amp, and a bit unbalanced to carry due to the positioning of the transformer... Good EQ section I'm fairly sure I sold mine for less than £350 though... maybe there is room to haggle the seller down a bit? Here is the thread relating to my old amp...
Dire Straits made a point of playing quietly enough so that people could still speak to each other and they got a LOT of bookings because of it. The pubs and clubs really appreciated it because more people came to see them as a result.

I actually find it quite annoying sometimes when I see a gig, and can't hear what I'm saying to people.
That's interesting. I've experienced plenty of instances where punters have complained because the band weren't loud enough to drown out rude audience members who were too busy talking too/at each other to even try to listen to the music! It's a difficult balance to get right I suppose, but it's made even worse by the price of gig tickets. If I shell out £40 or more a ticket, I want to hear the music, not the audience

If drums were quieter, would drummers just hit them harder or mike them up? It's an interesting concept. Are drums made to be a certain volume because that's what drummers expect, or do drummers choose loud kits out of some sort of one-upmanship? I suppose drums were originally designed/made to be played outdoors as part of a marching band or military accompaniment, so they had to be loud enough that they could be heard above all the associated din... but that no longer applies. Do drums need to be so loud now? I know that from my own experiences, music just kind of lacks something if it is too quiet. I also find that rude punters talk over quiet bands and that is annoying in itself... However, what constitutes "too loud" or "too quiet" depends on so many factors like the style of music, the age and size of the audience, the size and shape of the room, the amount of PA support, and so on. Electronic kits are great as they can be used to tame too-loud drummers. Unfortunately, the kind of drummers that are too loud wouldn't be seen dead playing electronic kits!

It's your bass - do what you want with it! Its value is only an issue if you want to sell it, and if you find yourself in another band you may well miss it. If you can afford to, hang on to it. Explore different tones by using EQ and (if necessary) pedals.
*sigh* I so hope this was posted in fun as indicated by the smilies. Useful review but the discussion has sorta got dissipated along the way guys.... oh and the OP has sold her retro2x10 already.
Oh, and the whole "clown-whore" thing is a very specific (and very amusing) reference to a thread from ages ago... But if you weren't there it won't mean much. No offence meant at all
It eclipses the wonderful Bergs (of various configurations) that I ran for years beforehand.
As the current owner of two of those Berg cabs, all I can say is that the TKS cabs must be awesome!

Thing is, there are luthiers and luthiers. At the top end we have the likes of Alleva Copollo, Fodera and Ritter - but then there are the more popular (on here at the moment) and cheaper outfits like Shuker, ACG and Marusczik. It is very difficult (and some would say pointless) to try to compare them on the strength that they are not "mass produced" as there are so many other differences.. And then what about companies like Status, Sadowsky and Zon? Would they be viewed as mass produced or Luthier-made/handcrafted etc? Blurry boundaries. I'm quite interested in this at the moment because I'm considering getting a bass made by Marusczik. It will probably cost about a grand, so I will have to sell a couple of other basses to fund it (including a Mayones - are they regarded as mass produced or handmade? ). But as the final result will be a one-off, made to my spec, what if I don't love it? It's not as if I can try one, is it? And if I don't take to it immediately, it's second-hand value will be a lot less than a Fender with a similar new price. It's a bit of a dilemma...
15-20 years ago Buddy Holly merchandise commanded huge premiums in auctions. The same items are currently worth half to two thirds what they were back then. The market has peaked, the buyers now aren't buying that stuff. On the other hand, Kurt Cobain, Sid Vicious or other similar vintage gear is more sought after and now commands higher prices.
Yes, the nostalgia market just ain't what it used to be!

I love jazzes, and own four - but I am a bit perplexed that there are so many in the marketplace at the moment...

Just outstandingly beautiful ..... And bass tone to die for.....
Conan replied to Wonky2's topic in General Discussion
Meh... it's pleasant and relaxing yes (although there are times when it feels like the percussion and bass are playing different tunes), but it's all been done before really hasn't it? Not that I could do it of course Nice tone though, I agree -
In the 60s it was still a common practice for even the biggest bands. When The Beatles first toured Australia, Ringo was sick. The Beatles toured with a dep.
So did Thin Lizzy - well, not Ringo of course... but maybe it's a drummer/Australia thing?

My band are currently working toward what we regard as the ideal scenario. We are an original band, but we are putting together a covers set as well (we usually have a few covers in the originals set too) which will hopefully allow us to play a whole range of different gigs. No worries about clashing diaries then! If you find a band with the right personnel, I think you can afford to be flexible about things.
