The other common sticking point is the miserable dispersion from guitar amps, especially closed back 4x12" cabs. But I have a solution for that...
One of the best guitar sounds I've ever heard (and with awesome dispersion) was when the amp (a Carvin) was run through a TKS 1126 bass cab! I find it hard to understand why guitarists put up with gear that is so out-dated and inefficient. I know that's kind of what they expect, but still...
You could say that playing at home with limited discipline and zero feedback from an audience is an easy outlet...? Some people's material should never be let loose on an audience for sure...but then again, some people's playing should be never be allowed either..
Another example of BC members passing off their own opinions as established fact. And a little dig at other bass players and musicians too - nice! Sometimes my "discipline" at a gig is poor, and sometimes when I am practising at home I am very disciplined (if we are using the word in the same way). So I'm not sure what you're trying to say there...
Is it better or worse? That’s like asking whether I prefer ice cream or custard. Shouldn't we at least try to treat the question seriously folks?

Bear in mind there are eight speakers in there, and the speakers are expensive (more expensive than the ones used by Ampeg and Orange, certainly). The price of the speakers alone must be several hundreds of pounds... Compared to the price of the other BF products, I don't think this is outlandishly expensive.
As a bass player you only get "match fit" by playing live and in front of an audience. I learnt bass so I could join a band and gig.

So, do it properly or not at all...IMO.
Fair enough, but not everyone who likes playing a bass (or any musical instrument for that matter) has the same needs or desires. If I made a decision never to play live again (not that I ever would - but humour me!), I don't think I'd sell all my basses. 'Big' live rig, probably, but I'd keep my practice amp and at least one bass. I would still play for my own enjoyment and satisfaction. We (on BC) may all play the same instrument, but we don't all do it for the same reasons. To judge others by your own standards is unfair and unnecessary.

Ever had a cheapo bass that you just keep going back to?
my two main basses probably play and sound better imo than other guitars 3x the price.
Possibly.... indeed probably - but you'll never know until you try! -
I have no experience of Babicz, but when I swapped the Badass II on my Geddy Lee for a MIM BBOT* (and back again), there was no difference in tone or sustain IMO. I didn't change the strings at the same time... * Sounds like a Star Wars android...

It's not a tone that I would use in my current band (even if I could get it!) - but this Dave Meros line is just awesome and suits the track so well http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pCw3Aw9yyk And more progtastic tone-mastery from Jonas Reingold... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lhyJVEtiN4 Damn! Why aren't my youtube videos embedding?

I have five. Four of them are Jazz basses. They are all different, and all get gigged (except the fretless, which just isn't needed in my current band). All of them are pretty cheap, and all were bought used except the J&D which cost the princely sum of £119 brand new!! I have though about selling a couple of them, but the market is so depressed at the moment that I would get enough for them to justify that. It would genuinely be a struggle if I had to downsize to two (one J and a P) as I like all five of them for different reasons...
That typical big crash ending to a song where the cymbals are going, you are playing at the high end of the neck, and the guitarist is soloing......not a feeling like it in the world
Eh?!
Playing music I've written (or had a part in writing) and watching people enjoy it is a great feeling.
Agreed. Much as I enjoy rehearsing and working on stuff, it's the positive reaction of an audience (no matter how small) that makes all the effort, expense (and arguments!) worthwhile That said, I don't think I could go back to gigging every weekend again. Too many other things in my life now. So when we play I like the gigs to be good quality. But it's difficult to get good gigs when you don't play so often... bit of a Catch 22.

Although I like GFS pickups (from the States, and really cheap!), and EMGs; if you want the sound of a Fender I would probably go for Fender pickups

My go-to bass at the moment (as it has been since I bought it last July) is my Jack and Danny brothers J bass. It cost all of £119 (including delivery) and is just so damned playable! In fact, my son has asked for a four string bass for his upcoming 18th birthday (he already has an Ibanez fiver) and after playing all of my basses (including a Majones Jabba and CIJ Fender Geddy Lee) has decided that he would like a J&D too! That said, it is streets ahead of anything that was available in the seventies, eighties and even nineties at a similar (or even great price point). I have done several gigs with it and it records well too. If, for any reason, I had to downsize my (modest) collection of five basses, this would be the last one I'd sell. So that's a YES then! -
Yeah... these are humbuckers Whereas these are single coil...
A typically dodgy Rush live album mix, but... damn. I wish Geddy had played a P more often.
Its funny hearing him on a P bass - it makes me realise that on a lot of his early recordings featuring the J basses (Moving Pictures in particular) he clearly didn't have both J pickups on full, but favoured the neck pickup: giving a rather Precision-esque tone. Limelight being a good example of this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-kQsVk8K4c

If you like to change your strings regularly (as I do) but don't want to spend a fortune (as I don't) then the Harley Benton strings from Thomann are surprisingly decent for less than four quid a set!

Your lead and amp are the most important part of your signal chain
