Just a hunch... If anything, I would expect volume levels to drop as a venue fills up with punters, so maybe you all turned up or started playing harder as the adrenaline kicked in? It's a common problem - but try to soundcheck at the same volume that you intend to play at EDIT - beaten to it by CV!

Just a bit more on the sound of the 1980s Status basses... As well as the obligatory Mark King stuff, here are a couple of other clips illustrating the non-aggressive tones of the beast. For clarity and accuracy, Pete Trewavas of Marillion was using a Series 2000 rather than the Series II - all electronics identical, but the bass body is all woven carbon-fibre rather than the Series II which is a carbon central neck and core with wooden "wings". So what I am offering here is an original Status Series II headless, through-neck, fretted bass guitar. It was made in 1986 (finished on November 24th!). Serial number is 263. I bought it brand new and have owned it ever since. Sustains for ever (if you want it to). Never goes out of tune (even if brought straight in from a cold car to a hot sweaty gig). Beautiful clear, ringing, bell-like tone. Very responsive and usable EQ. No dead-spots or inconsistencies... So why am I even considering selling it? It has been through a lot with me, but I am just not using it any more since I discovered Jazz basses... Condition is very good overall for a well-gigged musical instrument of its age, but I have always been a player, not a collector - so there are a couple of medium-sized dings on the top edge of the bass (right down to the wood, and the first one done on a cymbal only a few weeks after I bought it, so you can imagine how gutted I was ). I contacted Rob Green a couple of years ago about getting these chips repaired, but it was going to be prohibitively expensive - especially with shipping in both directions. To be fair, you can't see them (and neither can any audience) when you are playing the bass. There are a few other minor dings, and obviously there is a tiny amount of superficial scratching and swirling (v[i]ery [/i]little due to the quality and thickness of the finish), some minimal corrosion on the brass hardware, and some milky discolouration on the lower edge of the fretboard. Pics will attempt to show all this, and I am not trying to kid anyone that this is a pristine "found it under the bed" instrument! Pickups are GMT "Hyperactive II" humbuckers and the active circuitry is 2-band bass and treble cut and boost (mid control came on the later models). I had the circuitry (only the internal wiring and PCB, not knobs or switches) replaced a couple of years ago as the original was developing a fault. The replacement circuit was bought from Status themselves (at a cost of around £120!) and installed by Howard the Bass Doc. As well as the original (and very heavy) full flight case, there is also a much newer Hiscox fitted hard case. Either (or both at extra cost) are available with the bass. The flight case was replaced due to the deterioration of the interior foam - which is a common problem in Status cases of this age (it's 30 years old next year!). It has also been rather tastefully "decorated" (I was only 20 years old when I got it ). It can certainly do aggressive and growly though! To give an idea of the tonal versatility, I have used this as my main (and indeed only) bass in bands playing many styles, including blues, rock, metal, soul, funk, poppy originals and retro surf-punk! It is still my first-call bass for recording purposes due to it's being virtually noise free and staying perfectly in tune (even for years!). I have thought about selling my "soulmate" several times over the years, but always changed my mind - but maybe now the time has come to try something else... Price is negotiable, and it is always difficult to put a price on a rare and historic instrument - but as a starting point (and after doing a fair bit of research), I think £1200 is a reasonable opener. I am open to trades: four string bass guitars out of preference please but amps and cabs also considered, no harm in asking! Bear in mind though, that I am not desperate for a quick sale - and will not let this piece of English bass guitar history go for a silly price - no matter how slow the market is! Chill dude! Nobody is attacking you here or being "aggressive" - especially Chris b, who (IME) always gives very useful advice in a friendly way. You may be perceiving our confusion as aggression? There are always problems when we try to describe sound in words, and I think that is causing a bit of an issue here too. We are just trying to understand where this odd clicky sound came from - as it does sound strange that a cabinet (especially a Barefaced one) would add sounds that weren't there in your original signal... To my knowledge, few of the BF cabs are actually "voiced" at all - but intended (and designed) to accurately reproduce the signal that your bass and amp are sending to it. Which does kind of imply that the clickiness is there, even if you haven't been able to hear it through any other system!

[/quote] So the Berg and Vanderkley did a good job of masking/hiding the "clicky" sound of your bass. The accuracy of the ST2 didn't. It's perfectly cool to prefer the sound of one cab over another, but the reasons for such preferences are not always obvious. Clearly, both the Berg and the Vanderkley are colouring your sound to some extent. That said, most Barefaced users found that they had to fairly radically re-think their EQ settings when they moved to BF from other cabs. Just out of interest, how long did you spend playing through each cab? Did you re-EQ the amp or leave it "flat" for all cabs?

You tell 'em Jenny However, it does mean that there will be more voltage ("power/juice/sound...") going to the 210 than the Compact so you will probably be hearing more of the 210 to a certain extent. But if the balance is right then this is not a problem in itself.

What many people mean by "goes lower" is that they hear more "bass" - when sometimes the frequencies that they are hearing are closer to low midrange... (not that 60Hz falls into that category of course).

It's a nice dilemma to have... but clearly still frustrating! If you want the two cabs to match (the photo above implies that you don't) then the choice is clear - sell the Compact. But it sounds like you really like the sound of the Compact! So moving one of the 210s would make more sense in that case. Bear in mind that the new G3 Super Compact has a different driver and a different sound to the one you currently have... Just a word of warning though - check whether your gear will be insured while at Uni. It may not be.

Are you implying that these strings are not what they claim to be, or that buying at this price is in some way hazardous? I don't understand...
