1. Oh no!! Really? Damn that's sad news...
  2.
Don't understand where this 'thin sound' criticism is coming from! A Jazz can be hefty as feck if you want it to be.
Indeed! There is a lot of bollox talked about J basses (IMO) A J can (pretty much) do what a P can do (sound-wise), but the reverse is certainly not true. I get the ergonomics thing though. Some players just prefer the shape/size/feel of a P. Horses for courses!
  3. I find them very versatile, and I just love the necks! I even have big hands, whereas a lot of people who dislike the slimness of the necks think it's because of the size of their hands... Great rock basses too(and not just Geddy Lee!). Two examples off the top of my head... 4.
... that pro you're talking about didn't start out on the big stage; he went through far more club/ bar/ basement gigs that you and has already done the legwork necessary to understand how to get a great sound for every size room you can think of at every volume level. He probably still plays in small rooms in his town when he's off the road and maintains up- to- date knowledge of all the new developments in amp- world.
Yes - there is that as well!
  5. It might sound daft, but listening to the radio a lot can be helpful! Many function bands update their sets regularly with what is currently popular, so at least if you hear the songs a lot and have a good ear, it makes it easier and quicker to learn/busk them.
  6.
How about we look at what actually happened and formulate a proportional and appropriate response. Before going 'nuclear'..
Easy to say when you are not personally involved and have the benefit of collective hindsight... For someone who has plenty to say about what other people think, you seem to have a lot to say about this "incident" yourself! I'm not sure you are changing anyone's minds or perceptions.
  7.
I have a rough £350 budget to help my situation either second hand or brand new. I'd love to hear the virtues and pitfalls of both in terms of tone, reliability, loudness etc. Also any other suggestions that are within reach of my budget would be great.
I'm not sure that there are really any significant "pitfalls" in amps at that price range - but I would definitely recommend looking at second hand rather than new (unless you can find an outstanding deal!). For example - http://basschat.co.uk/topic/261883-aguilar-ag500-l42500/
  8. I got sick of waiting for the JBNXs and put Toneriders in my J&D jazz... But my MIM J might benefit from a change of pickups...
  9.
I use my Status in a country-rock band.
Are you Boss Hogg?

Why is this in the "reviews" section?
  11.
To anyone who doesn't already know, both the Bergantino CN212 and Barefaced Super Compact cabs are in the top 5% of greatest cabs ever made. Yes they are! The guys who repeatedly snipe about "issues" with Barefaced cabs (the same guys and the same "issues" every time) cannot alter the fact that these cabs really are that good. Anyone choosing to play either of these cabs will not be disappointed and the choice between them will be down to personal taste. The relentless sniping is also only about personal taste and should not worry anyone doing a serious evaluation prior to purchase.
Word.
  12.
The only thing that's irritating me is the white pick guard. I've been desperately looking for a black one but can't seem to find one that fits correctly anywhere. Any ideas other than getting one made up?
Not all Fenders are created equal - and one of the most frustrating inconsistencies is when it comes to the scratchplates... You could try ten different ones and none of them would fit! To be sure of a good fit, I would get one made up

  14.
What on earth relevance is this comment to the discussion?
It's all about some people needing to feel superior to others. It runs through a lot of threads on here recently...
  15. Peacefully in his sleep apparently. I think he deserved that. RIP
  16.
Just because I know how gear works doesn't mean I don't know how to use it.
Exactly! But the opposite can also apply...
  17.
I'm actually finding it kind of useful to read both, as it helps to correlate what we hear from different speakers with the measurements of them. Mr Johnson will no doubt disagree, but I don't think they're actually too far divergent. Bill's explanation about Qes makes sense to me, as the Qes value is described elsewhere as the electrical damping factor, with a low value meaning that with the coil and magnet have more control over the cone. Subjectively, when a musician plays through that, they might use words like tight, articulate or "fast", with a less well-damped driver coming across as loose, boomy or "slow". (Stop me if this is sounding like nonsense...) I'm all for looking at the measurements to back up and interpret what we get from listening, otherwise we'd all be chasing a dwindling number of discontinued drivers rather than figuring out how to get the sound we want from newer gear.
Absolutely! I totally agree. There is room for both in my philosophy - but clearly not in everyone's. I find the opposite viewpoints fascinating, but I find the conflict wearing...
  18. Surely this thread is now a perfect example of irresistible force meeting immovable object? The two "sides" are so intransigent and convinced of their "correctness" that they won't listen to the other. It's sad, and its unnecessary IMO. There is so much experience on offer, and it is a shame to see it being used in pointless ad hominem bickering. Or that's how I see it, anyway
  19.
I've learned to play as quietly as possible on stage and let the PA deliver the mix.
Horses for courses. Not every band plays with a big PA and soundman. My band only puts vocals through the (small) PA so everyone else is responsible for their own sound - and their stage sound IS the out-front sound. In those cases, cutting through and being audible are part of the same issue IMO/IME.
  20.
where I struggle, is the desire to "cut through a mix" comments one often reads, I like my bass to be part of the music - right in the mix...
Yes, but in order to be "in" the mix, one has to "cut through" the other instruments to a certain extent! That's where EQ comes in, rather than out-and-out volume. Find your sonic space, and all that...
  21.
Keep the '78!!!!!
Or at least put it away somewhere safe for a few years, and its value will hopefully increase...
  22. From the back it looks like a frog swallowing a fence post...
  23. A sensible, GAS-killing, expense-avoiding thread on Basschat?!?! Whatever next?
  24.
The sly BF knocking is getting tasteless. Condescending, passive aggressive presentations of one's own opinion as if it were an immovable fact are childish at best.
I've seen very little BF knocking on this thread (far less than normal, in fact!). I made a somewhat harsh comment earlier in the thread but I have edited that following further thought. I can't see any others?
  25.
I've seen countless references to players varying the volume on a Jazz bass to achieve a seemingly endless blend of tones. Sounds logical. Problem is, I can't seem to be able to do it! What am I doing wrong?!
Try speaking to KiOgon on here. There may be a wiring or capacitor mod that is easily made that will give you more control... Then again, I may be mistaken!
