Replacing Berg CN212 with 2x BF Super Compacts... Thoughts?
After owning a Berg AE212 for a while, I switched to a Gen 2 Compact and Midget on a bit of a whim, and did not regret it one bit.
Exactly! Horses for courses. -
I'm not sure I agree with this at all. Do you use BF cabs?
Er.... yes. Do you read members' signatures? I've owned and used G1 and G2 Compacts, a Vintage and (currently) a Big One. I've not owned (but have used) G3 Midgets and Super Compacts. I think I know the range quite well... Also, I am far from the only person to hold this opinion. Not that it bothers me much, I tend to judge my gear by how well it works (i.e sounds) rather than how it looks. -
Don't worry we have already had her party and that was a 3am drink orientated bash !!! This is her present from me.
That's cool - but I was thinking of booking him for my 50th next year...
The tonepump preamp volume on my Spector Euro is so hot that I have to have my volume at about half way.
One of the reasons I got rid of my Euro LX! Far too hot!

I'm surprised at how many people "keep a bit in reserve"! I always assumed (rightly or wrongly) that reducing the volume would affect the tone and that basses work best with volumes up full. Better for signal to noise ratio too... but maybe this is not true? Easier on a P bass (or something with only one volume control) but trying to do that on a J could be fiddly as having the two volumes set differently would change the tone (balance of the pickups) a bit I would guess. My problem is that if the volume(s) were less than 100%, I wouldn't quite know where I was! If it is always on full and I knock it slightly, I can quickly check and return it to its "full on" position. OK, so I'm a bit clumsy and often catch my knobs when I am playing...
-
That's odd. Not sure about that... not that I'm an alcoholic or anything - but if it was my birthday celebration and I wasn't allowed a few drinks before and during a musical performance in my honour.... I'm sure there is a reason why this clause exists, but it seems very strange to me!

1x12 cabs, wich one of these would you choose?
Conan replied to lagartortazo's topic in Amps and Cabs
+1 TKS 112
Yep - good call! Just about on budget, small, light, powerful and good-sounding I'd still advise looking at second-hand cabs on here though. Some great deals to be had, which brings stuff like Aguilar and Barefaced into your budget range... -

Aesthetics vs weight is the way I see it. While the quality of fit and finish on the BF cabs has come on leaps and bounds since the old Generation 1 days, they are still not to everyone's taste. If you judge with your ears, there is less between them and again it comes down to personal preference. One SC will easily "cope" with your TB500, but it will obviously be louder with two. They are 8 ohm cabs, but the whole difference between 4 and 8 is nowhere near the big deal that some people make it out to be.... that's another story! There are quite a few Barefaced owners who GAS over Bergantino cabs - so do you really need to change? If weight is the overall driver (see what I did there?) then I'd at least try an SC. You may be close enough to a BF owner to be able to try one (especially if you let them have a go of your Berg!). -
Geddy Lee sig...I had a CIJ like this and I still don't why I sold it. Probably because I'm stupid.
Me too! But maybe I'm not so stupid after all because I bought another one a little while later!
Thing with Barefaced, though, is how do you ever get to hear them? And they are a wee bit expensive to gamble on.
Fair point. Where are you based? There may well be a BF owner near you who would be happy to let you hear/try their cab...
Phil Mulford and I exchanged views on the BF Super Compact a few months back and Phil very much didn't like it, and said he much prefers 10s and 15s to 12s and this cab was no different in changing his view that 12s had too much gnarly mids for his taste
Ha ha! I wonder what he would have thought if he tried the old G1 or G2 Compact? Would all those "gnarly mids" have turned him off fifteens?
-
Barefaced I believe now - one of their first endorsing artists.
Ah! I didn't know that. Any idea which cabs he uses? He's one of my favourite players, so I should have known that!
Of course, everyone talks about my sound. Everyone.
I was just commenting on that to my daughter this morning....
No, I guess it doesn't HAVE to be. But I want it to have good clarity, plenty of bottom without being woolly, powerful enough to play halls and also portable. What are your thoughts? :-)
That you could get all of these from any number of good quality cabs - the size of the speaker(s) is not the most important factor! I won't mention the Barefaced word (Oh, OK - I just did!) but several of their cabs (if bought second-hand) would give you what you need I would look at manufacturers rather than speaker combinations.
Plus, I couldn't possibly stretch to an Aguilar cab as well as a head, so what in the name of Jeebus kind of cab do I match an Aguilar head to without compromising it immensely? Buying the Aguilar head would leave me £300 for a 2x10 cab, and I'm not up for buying any old cab just to fit budget.
Does it have to be a 2x10?
Re the pencil thing, I do that every time I change strings. Don`t know if it`s needed, but I figure it`s not going to cause issues, so always do it.
Without getting all pedantic about things.. what kind of pencil? Hard or soft lead? HB? The Shakepeare (2B or not 2B)? Does it matter?
I'm not a fan of the spec of the U.S. GL. The maple blocks are.. meh. The pickguard is tacky. And it looks like it has long-stem tuners too, which is just.. weird. All IMO, of course.
I also read something about the neck being more chunky. So it's more like a standard J then?
Like Neil Murray perhaps
Oh? What does he use?
My favorite Geddy Lee tone, and playing, is on their debut album. I think this opinion makes me something of a minority.
Wasn't he still using primarily a P bass on the first album? I love his tone/playing on that one too! Not sure if he'd switched to the Rick by the time this recording was made - but his tone is huge on here...
I don't think Id pay more than 500 for the Jazz.
It has Bartolini pickups remember - that would add a bit to the value (assuming you like those pickups of course!) But yes, I think the current J owner would be getting the better of this deal.

Have a read of this thread maybe... http://basschat.co.u...tortion-issues/. Based on my experiences (and input from others) I'd say it's more likely that it is the amp that is causing the "farting" (i.e. distortion) than the cabs.
