1.
Moral of the story, turn it down, respect each others spectrum and don't start a frequency or volume war.
Result!
  2.
singles? Sorry, I'm a little lost now

Me too!
I'm assuming he means single coil pickups? As in rather than humbuckers? Generally regarded as having a "thinner" tone but cutting through better in a mix (I believe)
  3.
Yeah right, they use old PV stage monitors
Top response! One should never allow accuracy to stand in the way of a good pontificate!
  4.
I find the general 'understanding' of scooping to be as wrong as 'up your mids' comments.. IMO, of course.
You keep making these sweeping statements without actually explaining what you mean! It's very confusing... I think most of us understand "scooped" to mean a tone that is lacking in midrange frequencies but often has a significant boost to the top and bottom end. The classic "smiley face" on a graphic equaliser. Of course, the strict definitions of what constitutes "top" and "bottom end" vary from person to person. Where are people going wrong? Is my understanding flawed too? I'm equally perplexed by your comment about "upping the mids"? Adding more midrange to your sound? What's hard to understand about that? I'm happy to have my misconceptions and errors corrected of course - but just telling me I'm wrong isn't very helpful
  5. You're a bass player. you moved house, and the previous owner had left a Trace Elliot bass cab in the loft??? What were the chances of that??
  6.
i need a jazz bass! argh...
Is the correct answer!
  7.
I prefer the maple neck version on this video. Unfortunately I own a rosewood version.
I have four J basses of various types. Two are maple and two rosewood. There are differences, but nothing like this!
  8.
Personally, I have always found a clear difference in tone between maple and rosewood boards as far as jazz basses and stingrays go.
I've noticed a difference, yes - but mostly in the feel. The maple tends to give more "buzz and clank" irrespective of the height of the action IME. I'm surprised by the magnitude of the difference shown by the video though!
  9.
jfinkle would appear to have been banned since posting that comment, so you may not get that elaboration.
Was it something I said?
  10.
Yes sorry, after reading that back it does look accusatory. I can assure you it was a general comment and definitely not aimed as anyone in this thread. and I make bad judegment calls all the time... my last post is possibly a prime example.
Don't worry - no offence taken!
  11.
I have Drive on full, and Gain at 12 o`clock, and even then only get break-up when I hit the strings hard on my passive Precision.
Hmmmm. That's not what I wanted to hear...
  12. They sound very different! I can't believe all that difference is down to purely the fretboard material though? Are the body woods and pickups (and positioning) the same? Strings?
  13.
being a tosser makes someone sexist not being a man. Same as being white doesnt make you a racist... being a moron does.
Sometimes people who are neither tossers not morons make bad judgement calls, and behave (inadvertently) in a manner that can be interpreted as sexist or racist.
  14.
Casual misogyny, nice.
I've just re-read the entire thread and I am struggling to find any examples of misogyny. Misplaced and mis-judged attempts at humour, yes - and apologies for some of that... Would you care to elaborate on your rather brief but condemnatory comment?
  15.
Casual misogyny, nice.
Interesting first post...
  16.
That cab is fine with 500 watt heads in general - the amp shouldn't have an issue with it.
Exactly. Barefaced cabs are very conservatively (i.e. realistically) rated. It's nominal impedance is 6 ohms, so its not as if it is drawing the maximum power from the amp anyway - 300/350 watts maybe.
  17.
Have you or can you try it with another cab... Some cabs are notoriously 'inefficient' and need a lot of driving and it may be the amp hasn't the guts for it..??
There are other cabs I can try, yes. My cab never had any issues with my old Hartke, and it was fine with the TC RH750 I (briefly) owned.
  18.
I don't think it should sound like that..
That's my concern
  19.
I don't think it should be distorting that easy, it's not a crappy guitar lead in the chain or something like that?
Nope. I only use quality cables (OBBM at the moment).
Change cables, then if that doesn't work, engage the -10db pad and see how that effects it?
Tried that. It helps with the distortion, but the level is too low...
  20.
Edit to ask, what are you putting it through?

Which bass are you using?
Cab is a Barefaced Big One. I've tried the amp with three passive jazz basses - A CIJ Geddy Lee with EMG pickups, A J&D 1975 with Toneriders and a MIM Fender with the stock pickups. None of them are high-output basses... If I was using a Spector I could understand!
  21.
Drive is off when fully anti clockwise (about 7 o'clock).
Yep. That's what I assumed
  22. Having recently acquired one of these amps, I am happy with the "warmth" in the tone and the control over the midrange - both of these factors were important to me in choosing a new amp to replace my Hartke LH500 However, I am having problems getting a truly clean (i.e. undistorted) sound from the amp. Even with the gain set on zero (and the drive fully off) there is some break-up! Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a way around it? There are no centre detents on the tone controls, but am I correct in assuming that they offer cut and boost, and therefore would be "flat" in the 12 o'clock position? I'm confused...
  23.
Sick to death of reading about fretless "beast" Tony Franklin, to me he is to JG what Dacia is to a Bentley.
They play very different styles of music and their personal styles differ massively too. In fact, the only thing they seem to have in common is their preference for fretless basses! Horses for courses. I think it's a bit unfair to suggest that one is "better" than the other though. Enjoy both!

    SOLD!

Is there any reason why the serial number area of the headstock has been blurred/obscured? Or is it just a trick of the light? Lush colour mind!
  25. Am I right in thinking that this is an active bass? What do the controls do?
