1.
Alan Thompson.
Who always sounds spookily like Giblin to my ears! It's hard to tell the difference between them (IMO). But for a (relatively) unknown bassist, Giblin has a hell of a CV!
 2.
Got some Harley Benton 45-105 arriving this weekend. We'll let you know.
Yes, I've just acquired some of them - but none of my basses need new strings quite yet... will report back when I have installed some!
 3. Just bought some HB strings from Paul. Transaction was completely pain and hassle-free and I would thoroughly recommend him!
 4.
Well I never! Just fired mine up and it is exactly the same as yours.
Odd, isn't it? It kind of implies that the tone circuitry comes before the gain control in the signal chain... Can that be right?
 5. They look very nice.... but i just love the fact that he has basses called Jake and Elwood
 6.
I do however feel it's a sad reflection on this community (and society) that's we can't be adult about saying the word Knob.
Hmmmm. Yes and no. It upset me to think that I had offended someone by thoughtless comments, but at the same time I do think there is a place for what I earlier referred to as "puerile humour". The word "knob" is inherently amusing, even without its innuendo capabilities. I think it would be a very sad place if we couldn't exploit the entertainment value in words. BTW, isn't FADGE an alternative tuning for a five string bass?
 7.
That reminds me - there's a nice warm bit of fadge waiting for me when I get home.
I am (successfully, so far) resisting the urge to respond to that.... Except that I have just responded! Doh - you know what I mean!
 8.
OK, point taken. I've deleted the videos I'd posted. I'll repeat, however, that there is a 'Report' button on every post; it's a guaranteed manner to have an official measured response from the Mod team.
Indeed. And I used it myself this morning... to report my own post.
 9.
That's just what a young girl needs. An old man making sexual jokes in her thread in which she asks for advice. Thanks.
I'll back off on the sexism if you agree to do the same with the ageism.... OK?
 10.
Back on a more positive note, I'm REALLY looking forward to trying one of these out on Saturday. Will report back after the weekend.
And?
 11.
Prepare for the onslaught of TKS and Barefaced suggestions.
Perhaps there's a reason for that? Not sure they will constitute an "onslaught" mind...
 12.
I see there's a big twin on sale here in Glasgow (perfect for me location wise), but the cab is not really a step forwards in weight terms.
Really? What do you mean? The BT2 must be much less than half of the mass of your fridge! They are unbelievably light when you first try to pick them up. When I tried my first Compact my first thought was "they've forgotten to put a speaker in here"!
 13.
The good thing is that the TH has quite a lot of movement with the sweepable control so the amp should be capable of taming a cab sympathetically. In this sense a sweep or semi parametric is 'better' than an out and out graphic...especially if the bands are quite far apart.
Agreed. And as you say, the cab reveals every bloody frequency in perfect detail! I will persevere as I think there is a very good tone in there somewhere. Whether it is within my abilities to find it is another matter!
 14.
But the real question is, how do we know that Conan is old?
I certainly feel old.... but I was wondering that too! Do I exude the aroma of Wether's Originals?
 15.
I just don't need it. If you're young and female, you go through a barrage of so called "puerile humour" everywhere you go. If you could walk in our shoes on a Friday night when you can't walk through a town centre without all kinds of lewd suggestions being hurled at you and disgusting people blocking your path unless you "go on give us a kiss" - you might understand. It means that I can't go out on my own at night without being scared. How would you feel? What about your first ever bass gig and constantly being told by drunks to get your **** out. That's puerile humour isn't it? It's really hard and has reduced me to tears a number of times. If I provoke any sexual innuendo, then fair enough. But I don't. Have a look at the following. This has a very familiar ring to it. Could be Bournemouth on a Saturday night. And then maybe people should think before they think puerile humour is appropriate.
Jenny, I am sorry. That is a real apology. I had no idea my silly comments would make you feel so bad and it was genuinely not my intention. As others have said (not that I am hiding behind anyone else's words) this place can be like a cross between a workplace and a pub. People make off-the-cuff comments without really thinking about who is listening and how they will react. At other times, we know exactly how people will react, and deliberately seek that response. This was not one of those occasions. I don't know you, and certainly try not to judge people by the way they present themselves on an online forum. I have two daughters and work on a predominantly female environment. Most of my friends are female. I say this not to defend my actions or try to paint an image of myself, but to give a little bit of context to my comments. My sense of "humour" is the same at home and at work as it is on here - and I have always been sensitive to the feelings of others. It is much easier in person of course, when one can see their response physically. I would delete my comments, but I feel that would not be appropriate. It would also make the thread look strange and make subsequent comments seem random. They have also been quoted and I can't delete those. I am also very sad that you have had to endure such awful experiences just because you are young and female BTW, and just to end on a lighter note - maybe in future it might be safer to avoid thread titles that mention the word "knob"? It would just be a matter of time before someone makes reference to it...
 16.
Have you tried Markbass? if you wanted to test out my F1 then just give me a shout, and if all the knob twiddling with the TH500 doesn't work out then i'll swap it for a bundle of cash!
No I haven't tried MB, and I will definitely bear your offer in mind!
 17.
Sex-IST
18.
That's just what a young girl needs. An old man making sexual jokes in her thread in which she asks for advice. Thanks.
It's called innuendo and double entendre, actually - but I take your point. Sorry you didn't like it, but if you spend a bit of time around Basschat you will see that this type of puerile "humour" is quite widespread. Many of us "old men" actually enjoy it. Maybe "BassTeenGirlChat" would be more appealing to you? You seem to make quite a few disparaging remarks regarding the age and gender bias of the membership of this site after all. Word.
 19.
Could it be the cab not being able to give you want you want...??
I suppose it could be... I know that you are not the biggest fan of Barefaced, but please believe me when I say (again) that I am happy with my cab. Maybe part of the problem is that the Big One (which was designed - IIRC - to be similar in delivery to a good PA - i.e. very clear, uncoloured and "hi-fi") is just too honest and shows the differences between amps very clearly? I don't know. I am certainly no expert in sound. Part of my problem is that I don't have a lot of cash to spend on bass gear, so I am limited either to what is cheap (if bought new) or what is available (if bought used). After selling my Hartke, the TC RH750 became available locally at an excellent price that was too good to refuse. I had wanted to try one of the Aguilar TH heads but as my budget was limited to around £400 I thought that the 350 would be my limit. Having acquired the RH750, I was able to trade for my current TH500. So financially I am happy, and have been quite fortunate. I have moved from a very simple, no-frills amp (the LH500) to a couple of amps that have loads more features. Maybe I will just need more time to get the hang of these features - or maybe I just haven't found my ideal amp yet?
 20. I've just got one, and I'm pleased with it -but I'm a little baffled by the interaction of the gain and the tone controls. Wouldn't you think that when the gain is set at zero, there would be no sound at all? I played most of last night's rehearsal with the gain on zero!! (And I was pretty loud...).
 21.
I acquired this in a trade recently...
"Recently"?? It was only last week! You're as bad as me... Hope this one finds a loving home soon, as it is indeed a great amp.
 22.
I'm amazed (in a good way) that this tone goal is so clear to you
It was very simple really - I wanted more midrange in my tone and the LH500 couldn't give it to me! Other amps I have tried since have been able to provide the mids, but due to the way the controls work, finding a sound that I like and can use in a band situation is more difficult than I had anticipated... The Aggie (which I tried last night) has lots of potential, but (as I recall reading in someone else's post a while back), the interactivity of the controls is counter-intuitive and frustrating. What it shows (quite clearly!) is that there is no one "bass tone" and that each manufacturer of bass gear has different goals in mind and different ways of achieving them! As with other things in life, sometimes the journey is more enjoyable than the destination
 23.
All of my obbm cables are still operational.
24.
Conan - if you don't get the sound you want from the Aguilar and still have RH750, I can guide you through the setup on the RH to push out those mids. Give me a shout if you need it.
Thanks for that - but as I do not have a big budget for bass gear, the RH750 was the price for getting the TH500 (i.e. I traded!). TBF, the TC had no problems pushing out mids, it just had too many features that I didn't need and I found them distracting.
