Just too many to mention (or remember! ) but I'm really into Phil Lynott's tone at the moment, and this is (to me) a perfect example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TqRJtUorPMg
Haemorrhoids?
Naaa... to hard to spell! Anyway, I got rid of mine with one of these...

My cricket club has had a number of professionals over the years. They get paid to play cricket. They get referred to as "pros" or "professionals". Yet they do not belong to any professional body...
I wouldn't dream of getting involved in any kind of creative musical project if I was able to listen, react and play and subsequently modify what I was doing as a result of feedback from my fellow musicians both in terms of the notes I played and the sound(s) I used.
Then maybe you are a pro?

So being a musician is not a "profession"? I'm a teacher and a musician. Does that make me a professional musician?
Maybe different amps give different characteristics.
They do - some of them anyway... Not sure about Ampeg (although an SVT200T I used to own had a nice rich, but slightly scooped sound). Getting any mids out of my Hartke LH500 is bloody hard work mind...
just because you do something as a job doesn't make you a proffesional. Often you see adverts for flats to rent "Seeking Proffesionals". I'm guessing they're not looking for proffesional refuse collectors.
Bloody semantics again! We all know what we mean, and what others mean - but we still find things to argue about!
If you have the ability and right mind set a good pro player can push you to be a far better player than you'll ever be on your own, and none of it ever relates to frigging speaker sizes, etc.
Oh no!! What will we have left to talk about on here??

I missed out on the whole compression/Vail Johnson thing as I was away over Christmas and had no computer access. Interesting situation! Some of the responses on that thread made me see certain members in a different light when I had respected their input previously... I think there is certainly a hard-core in the membership here who think of themselves (rightly or wrongly) as experts. Whether their experience backs up that personal view is open to conjecture, but they don't like their views being challenged by anyone - even top professionals in the same field. To be fair, those same top pros also hold views - but at least theirs tend to be supported by lots of real world experience. That kind of makes it more valid in my book! I'm no hagiographer, and yes - I do know who Vail Johnson is, having been of that age in the 80s and 90s where I was listening to a lot of US "soul" and "funk" music. Vail played on a lot of those recordings. This doesn't raise him to deity status of course, but it certainly beats most of the collective experience on here! That said, you don't always know what someone's experiences are, and there are several "ordinary" members on here who have played on a number of recordings that were influential in my musical history I think the badderer (odd username!) summed it up perfectly. And if Vail had used a couple of judicious smilies in his opening foray then maybe none of this would have happened. What can pros add? Well, maybe in terms of factual knowledge, not much - but it terms of having been there and done it, plenty IMO.
How can anyone, who watches this, say the music has no heart and soul? Ok, you might not like the band, but to say it's lacking heart and soul is just wrong!
I dunno. While you could hardly accuse the three guys themselves of lacking those characteristics - I think what constitutes "heart" and/or "soul" could be perceived as lacking from their music if you don't like that genre. And I say that as a massive Rush fan! Soul may be a long way off. I would definitely say that they are closer to the heart...
As for using my guitar amp, I would be inclined to try it at least. It's a big, tough, understressed, hand built, valve driven behemoth of hi-fi sonic awesomeness...the amp would be more than man enough.
It might... but it also sounds expensive, so I'm not sure I'd want to take that risk!
I would like to do an A/B test with a Barefaced Compact and Super Compact. I would put my money on the larger speaker sounding deeper.
Some people who have owned both (I've only had an original Compact) say that the new Super Compact actually has more bottom end... From the BF site: "Why this rather than the much revered Compact? The treble is brighter and more audible around the room, the midrange has more punch and also has better dispersion, the lows are just as big but better controlled and less boomy"
I personally use Aguilar DB112 cabs and one on its own is often plenty loud enough for most gigs. I've never found a 2x10 that can gig on its own without ragging it.
Interesting. You find a single 1x12 loud enough to gig, but not a 2x10? To be fair, the Aggies are excellent cabs - but what were the 210s that you used? I'd have thought that the 210s would be louder (assuming similar spec levels).
Makes me think that the manufacturers make the cabs to have specific sounds.
Indeed
So essentially (in theory) larger drivers don't necessarily sound 'bassier', nor do smaller ones give you more 'top end'.
True. But despite the "science", many bassists still insist that they can hear a difference when changing cone sizes! In most cases, it will not be a fair test. So they might have gone from, say, and old Peavey 1x15 to a much newer Ashdown 4x10. Any perceived difference in tone is likely to be as much down to the construction and size of the box as it is to the size of the speakers inside it. Also, the speakers will be from different manufacturers with different tolerances and quality levels... etc. I used to own a typical Trace Elliot stack during the 80s and 90s. In my experience, the 4x10 had less top end than the 1x15, and possibly more bass response!! Figure that one out! The best advice is to get the best cabinet(s) you can afford - regardless of the size of the speakers in it/them. How old are you? How big/strong are you? How much do you like humping heavy gear about? What is your budget? These are all far more important considerations than speaker size and configuration. But that is not what some people want to hear...

Pretty damned good and very authentic sounding! I actually prefer that guy's voice to Geddy's!!
It is if you're a buyer who's willing to hold out until the price drops even further.
Maybe, maybe not. I think we'll have to agree to disagree on that one! A buyer who holds out for an extended time period (denying themselves access to something that they have already identified as desirable) just to save a few quid - is not exactly in a position of "strength" IMO...
If you get a bit stuck drop me a mail, I've got the email for the head of the customer service department now
Excellent! I may just do that. I got an "out of office reply" when I replied to their mail... Something about them upgrading their returns policy...? It's kind of difficult with the bass only having cost £119. I guess it wouldn't be (financially) worth repairing and replacing pickups... but I've put quite a lot of time and effort into making it how I want it (set-up wise) and I'm not sure I want to have to do it all again with a new one. Also, I don't know what J&D's quality control is like. I got a good 'un, but a replacement might not be so good. To be fair, I was thinking of replacing the pickups anyway - so in a way I'd be happier keeping my bass and DV247 making a financial contribution towards the replacements. Not sure their "upgraded" returns system would be able to cope with that though
As soon as you start dropping your price you've killed the sale. People will sense a need to sell as a weakness and try to turn it to their advantage.
I see what you mean, but I'm not sure I totally agree with this. Sometimes (as in my case and a couple of others recently that I know of) a price drop reflects a change in the market - such as that mentioned above. It doesn't indicate weakness on the part of the seller IMO. The desire for a quick sale is not a weakness!
-
Do research for past prices, eBay, here, gumtree. Decide how desperate I am to shift it, versus condition, rarity etc. and adjust accordingly. Hold off if Thomann are doing daft end of line prices (new stuff for second hand prices)
All good advice. And it's not just Thomann! I'm trying to sell a used amp, and now GAK are doing a brand new one for not much more than I was asking... Part of the problem is that the seller always wants to get the highest price possible and the buyer wants the lowest. That's where haggling and negotiation come in (for some people - not everyone!). Added to that, it is very much a buyer's market at the moment so if you want to get a sale you may have to come down a bit from your asking price. Then there's the problems of sentimental value and upgrades.... and the "I want to get back what I paid for it" mind-set. Problem with that is that the market changes! It's complicated, but generally you can tell the genuine sellers from the opportunistic chancers (famous last words, I know!).
I guess I'm not very cool I've heard of Black Sabath but honestly can't name a single song of theirs.
Not to worry. I joined this site over five years ago, and in that time I have discovered several musicians (not just bass players) that I had never heard of before. Some of which are now so familiar to me that it is as if I had always known about them and their work!
