the seymour duncan website has some really good clear diagrams, if you want some help i'm in newcastle and have swapped a fair few pickups on guitars and basses over the years, be happy to guide you through the process over a cup of coffee. Matt
That's extremely helpful and kind of you Matt! Ironically, I have just heard from DV247 who sound like they will be replacing or repairing the particular bass I had in mind - so I will have to wait and see what they offer. Either way, I will be swapping out the pickups, but might have to wait a little while until it is returned or replaced. Once I know, I'll drop you a PM!

Well, I may have a result after all! Just had an e-mail from their returns department asking for my address for collection! What isn't clear is whether they will also be delivering a replacement bass or repairing the faulty one... I've e-mailed back seeking clarification on this point. Pleased I've had a response though - especially after reading all the negative experiences on here!

It looks like at least one of the pickups in my J&D J bass has packed in I've contacted the store I bought it from (DV247) to see what their thoughts on a replacement are, but am still to hear back from them... Even if they do replace the bass, I think I would still like to put a different set of pickups in - probably Entwistles. But there lies the problem. I have always handed my basses to Howard the Bass Doc for modding work and have never learned how to do these things myself! How difficult is it to remove one set of J pickups and replace them with a different set? There seems to be a lot of wires in there and I have no idea what any of them do (other than carry current of course!). I hear/read terms like "hot" and "ground" but I don't know what they mean... Is there a good online or paper resource that will guide me through this daunting process?
I'll need to get some Werther's Originals in.
I have heard kids at school refer to them as "paedo pills"... Possibly one of the least successful advertising campaigns ever?
One thing I really like about having an electronic kit live is the on stage volume is reduced. The back line can come down and I dont have to wear ear plugs. Walking out front I have been impressed with the band sound everytime.
This is also my experience. It is a shame that many drummers are so unwilling to use electronic kits. I understand how different they feel to "proper" kits, but they offer so many advantages too...

Maybe there was a party in the bar from the Bat Preservation Society? A difference of opinion surfaced, one thing led to another.... It happens all the time.

Barefaced Retro Two10 - Shock and Awe bass sound
Conan replied to Jenny_Innie's topic in General Discussion
Yeah I'm not sure I understand much of this either. Or Conan's Scooby link. But hey.
Sorry - maybe a bit obtuse in hindsight! It was in reference to some cool rap in the OP which reminded me of a section in the SD movie... I think the OP got it, buut my brain does move in mysterious ways sometimes Sadly I can't listen to the recording at work as there is a problem with updating Soundcloud. At home, my laptop speakers are crap so I won't get the full benefit... but I think I can imagine the tone - sounds as if it wouldn't be to far from what I strive for: sort of JJBurnel meets Geddy Lee... I'll have a listen this weekend -
Barefaced Retro Two10 - Shock and Awe bass sound
Drums courtesy of other Jenny and her programming digits on Logic. She knows a groove. Now don't go playin' this thru no lame-ass sound system. You gotta play this though an audiophile stuff or with some absolutely no tat allowed headphones. This is the sound I'm talkin' about. Those two Barefaceds with the RH750 are MONSTER!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xby81m1GtH8 -
Coolness aside... I'm with Mr Gadgie I'm afraid Still, good publicity from a Sabbath point of view!
Cannot beleive this is still here. I have a LH500. Great amp.
I know. I'm starting to think that I'll just keep it rather than offer it at a silly price. I'm already losing money on it... I know it's a buyers' market at the moment, but bugger me it shouldn't be this hard to sell a quality piece of kit like this at a price like this!
I emailled them before I bought my Glockenklang amp asking for a price match... they responded a week after I'd bought it from somewhere else...
Hmmmm.... that's not good!

Anyone have any experiences (good or bad) to share with this online music store? http://www.dv247.com/ The reason I ask is that I e-mailed them two days ago regarding a bass guitar I bought last summer. It has developed a fault but has a three year warranty... I explained what the fault is and asked for advice about how to proceed. I expected to have some sort of reply by now, but maybe that is unrealistic? I'll try to call them later, but e-mail is much more convenient for me. Thoughts and opinions?

Cool! When your first gig?

Phil Lynott : 65th birthday - 'Live & Dangerous' day on BC?
Conan replied to The Admiral's topic in General Discussion
I hadn't seen that clip of the soul band before. Still can't quite work out what Jimmy Bain was doing there on the second set of keyboards.
He co-wrote a lot of that material (and played keys on the solo albums), and as there were already two bass players in the band... -
Phil Lynott : 65th birthday - 'Live & Dangerous' day on BC?
Conan replied to The Admiral's topic in General Discussion
His solo albums are a little hit or miss, but when they hit, there are some heat tunes on them, I was never was overly struck on the stuff with the "soul" band, but again it does show Phil's diversity.
I agree. When they first came out I was not impressed. I was in my teens and didn't understand good songwriting... Now, as a "mature" fellow, I "get" what he was saying far better - especially the stuff about kids, relationships, drink and drugs, etc. -
Phil always kept himself in touch with the way music was moving at the time, its was a part of what made Lizzy special for me.
Totally! That has been one of the joys for me in recently re-discovering his solo albums. He really could turn his hand to almost any style he wanted... As these amps are now available brand new from GAK for the princely sum of £233 I have now reduced my selling price. Although GAK aren't including a rack unit or bag... http://www.gak.co.uk/en/hartke-lh500-head/25125 It's a tough world at the moment!
I can get one new from GAK delivered for £233.
Ooh! That's a good price! It won't come with a rack-bag though...
I think the geddy Lee should be a fine bass not sure if the mim will get dropped now
Sounds like the two basses have different neck profiles, with the new US model being a "thick C" rather than the very slim neck on the MIM (and the original CIJ) models. A lot of people bought the Geddy Lee J on the strength of the neck profile... It will be interesting to hear whether it makes much difference. Anyway, Geddy's original '72 J was fitted with a Badass II bridge, so are these new ones a true "signature" bass as such? It all gets very confusing in Fenderland!
-
Changing your bridge?..does this realy make any diffrence
Conan replied to patrikmarky's topic in Bass Guitars
I swapped the bridges between my MIM Standard J (BBOT) and CIJ Geddy Lee J (Badass II) a while ago. I even swapped necks around at some point too. Surprisingly. neither made much of a difference to my ears. I was a bit disappointed to be honest... -
Any of those you suggest would work. Several people on here are very complimentary about Entwistle pickups at the moment, which have the added bonus of being very inexpensive. Could you simply remove the preamp and use the noiseless Fenders in passive mode? I'm not familiar with those pickups so pardon me if that is a silly question! Some recent threads that might be relevant and useful to you... There are loads of threads on this very subject. It might be worth doing a quick search? You will get lots of suggestions, ranging from GFS, Wilkinson and Entwistle at the budget end of the scale; through Fender, EMG and Seymour Duncan in the middle and on to the boutique hand-winders.... None of it will be particularly helpful as only your ears will be able to tell you whether you like their tone in your bass or not... What kind of bass do you have and what pickups are currently in it?
