  1. Too much relicking then? Maybe - but you forget all that when you get the bass in your hands. It plays beautifully
  2. Top basses. Everything about them screams quality
  3. Why is it that when I'm looking for one of these they sell in no time? I try to sell one and nobody is interested!
  4. Howard the Bass Doc is a wizard at that type of thing - https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100008256334887
  5. Some interest, but still here. The perfect Christmas present for the bass player in your life. Or spoil yourself maybe...?

    TRADED

I can show you how if you like...
  8. Who would leave all their band gear in a warehouse?? Oh yeah - Roy Wood...
  9. A cheap and cheerful bass that plays very nicely - but after all these years I have come to the realisation that I am not very good on a fretless and I have never played in a band where the use of one would add to the sound... This is a solid, decent Chinese no-name instrument that was originally fretted (bought from tom1946 on here - The conversion to fretless was (beautifully) done by Howard the Bass Doc, including re-cutting the nut to allow a nice low action (although, bizarrely, the first photo makes the action look rather high ). It also features MIM Fender pickups and bridge. Colour is a sort of Fiesta/Dakota red, with a mint green 3-ply plate. It sounds very much like a Jazz bass, is easy to play, and would be a perfect introduction to the dark arts of fretless playing for someone with more stamina than me. The strings are LaBella Deep Talkin' flats (which cost nearly forty quid a set). It tips the scales at just over 4.2kg (9lb), but oddly feels a bit heavier than that... perfectly comfortable on a decent strap. The neck had a thick layer of gloss lacquer on it, but I rubbed it down with steel wool and it is much more comfortable to play now. I paid £100 for the bass, so that is what it owes me (even though the parts/upgrades are worth nearly that alone!). Plus the £7 I have just had to pay to continue my seller's subscription...
  10. Wow. And a fantastic price too! If I wasn't trying to downsize my own rig...
  11. Update: following communication with a previous owner, it turns out that the stock pickups were rewound by Oil City. Great-sounding pickups, but I'm not sure how that would affect the value. As a result, I will leave the price the same for now https://www.oilcitypickups.co.uk/
  12. Not within my price range, sadly...
  13. Isn't that what the "X" represented in the model name? A cross for crossover and therefore bi-ampable (is that a word?). As stated above, TE gear was what just about everybody aspired to in the 1980s. When I got my first "proper" job I took out a bank loan and bought the obligatory stack - AH250, 1048 (4x10") and 1518 (1x15"). Unbelievably loud and capable of just about any tone. I was a lot younger and stronger in those days and usually managed the load in/out by carrying one cab in each hand. No way could I do that now!! In the end (after at least 15 years of faultless service) I just wasn't playing often enough to justify storing something the size of a family wardrobe in the house, and down-sized. Do I regret it? When on stage, yes - but when it comes to loading in and out, definitely not! But if I had roadies... TE gear is available at really good prices at the moment, but this may not continue as the Class D/Neo bubble shows signs of bursting. Retro and cutting edge at the same time? Oh, and the UV light was the height of cool!
  14. One of these is definitely on my bucket list WoT had the Bass Doc make him a lovely tort plate for his IIRC - improved the visuals a lot IMO.
  15. Further price reduction to £375. You guys are killing me!
  16. A gorgeous example of one of Fender's best-regarded J basses. The serial number dates this model to 2009, even though I have only owned it since this summer. It is the best J bass I have ever owned, and I have had over a dozen! The only reason I need to sell it is that my current band requires me to use a five string, and I just can't afford to buy one and keep this... The previous owner told me that another previous owner added extra relicking (as if it needed that!) and had the pickups rewound. I don't know what they sounded like originally, but they are incredibly rich and powerful now so the experiment obviously worked. For those interested in (or obsessed by!) such things, the mass is exactly 4kg (or 8lb 11oz in old money). I was slightly surprised after putting it on the scales, as it doesn't feel that heavy and balances beautifully. Bass is located in Newcastle upon Tyne, but I would be happy to package it up for shipping (at buyer's risk and expense of course). Would prefer a cash sale as I have already spotted a fiver locally that I am interested in - but would also consider trades for low to mid priced five strings (especially Sire Marcus Miller V7s, Yamahas or G&Ls). Any questions, or any other photos - just ask.
  17. As the title says. Bought for a project that never came to fruition. A very robust and great-sounding unit. Works OK on batteries, but much better on Mains for some reason... Shipped anywhere in the UK for £35 - a fiver less if collected from Newcastle upon Tyne.
  18. Bump for added trade options.
  19. Quite a canny little video - but It's a shame that so many people equate the "slap tone" with heavily scooped mids. It doesn't have to be like that, and if done carelessly can cause the bass to disappear in a mix. A good reference point would be Freddie Washington's masterful line in Forget me nots, but you knew that!
