2. Ah - the old "can of worms" question again.... This could get interesting! My own opinion is that they are not worth the vast sums they cost. To be fair, I haven't played one - but I personally would find it impossible to justify paying such a sum on what is (for me) essentially a toy, or part of a hobby. I'm sure they are incredible to play, and the attention to detail in their manufacture is staggering. But the prices??? But there are quite a number of BC members who own them - I'm sure they'll be along shortly with their counter-arguments!
  3.
I am eagerly anticipating Mr Lee joining Mr Wilko Johnson in a cheery rendition of 'Boris The Spider'.
Now that I would pay to see!

  7. What a stunner! Incredible condition for its age... I just can't stop looking at it!
  8.
I've just ordered a pair of JBXN jazz bass pickups for my Squire VM jazz. I'll post sound clips of before and after to go alongside the soundclips of my stock electronics vs. KiOgon electronics.
Great! That sounds like an interesting comparison
  9. These ones? http://www.thomann.de/gb/la_bella_760m_james_jamerson.htm Of course, the funk is in the gunk -- and also in the fingers... but it would seem to be a good starting point!
  10.
it was his grand mothers yiddish accent when she pronounced Garry it came out as Geddy !!!
I'm sure it was his mother.... but that's certainly close enough
  11. Conan

I'm interested too, if this deal falls through...
  12.
perhaps it's not really appropriate to keep this type of thread open if it's simply an opportunity for folks to moan and speculate. If people are posting here to wish Howard well and a speedy recovery, I'm of course all for it staying open.
Agreed.

  14. One of their best tracks IMO... but I'm not a fan of the Wal/Superwound elastic bands combo Jazz or Rick for me please Ged!

  17.
Perhaps you could enquire as to why he hasn't replied to me since 26th May 2014 regarding a job I paid a deposit for on 21st October 2013?! Si
That's none of my business. He's a mate, I'm not his business manager. However, I do have his mobile number if that would be helpful. PM me if you would like it.
  18.
I believe that his Mother was Polish and pronounced 'Gary' as 'Geddy'. Could be be wrong though.

The story I heard, many years ago, was a variation on that theme, and that his mother had a heavy Yiddish accent, thus making "Gary" sound like "Geddy".

Correct. She couldn't pronounce Gary.
Yep. It is all explained in the rather excellent "Beyond the lighted stage" rockumentary. He wasn't christened Geddy - it is a nickname used by family and friends - and even by Dirk himself.
  19.
it is clearly not fit for purpose - the contract is between seller and purchaser, not manufacturer and end-user.

The Sale of Goods Act clearly states that the onus is on the retailer to remedy the situation.
This, and this^
  20. For some reason I can't access Soundcloud from work... but I don't really need to hear the clips, as the comments above add weight to what I already think. People who buy expensive basses do so because they like the look and feel of them. Or the perceived kudos of owning a "quality" instrument. They don't do it because the bass will sound measurably "better". Not quite in the same price bracket, but my J&D J bass plays nearly as well and sounds nearly as good as my CIJ Fender Geddy Lee (and any other 'proper' Fender I have played). The question is how much "nearly" are you prepared to put up with? Personally, there are other things I would rather spend the extra £2600 on! But I'm sure I'd enjoy playing the Pino mind...
  21.
Not to be a pain, because the bass looks great, but why is it sold 5 times in 10 years if it's so good?

From memory three were Dougal went abroad, Conan didn't get on with 5 strings and went up to 5 then back to 4 for a while. It is weird though your right.
Yes. I bought it from a guy in London who was emigrating to Australia and needed a quick sale. I wanted a decent fiver for a project that needed the extended range - and I am a dyed-in-the-wool four string player. The project never materialised and I no longer needed a five string. Also, although this bass looks, feels and sounds great - I found the controls a bit complex for live use. I prefer simple tone and volume! I sold it to Pinball (for a lot less than its current price... ), who was going through a bit of a "trying things out" phase. He liked it but ended up with a lot of basses and needed to down-size his collection... Dunno what happened to it after that, but be assured that this is a quality piece of kit. The fact that it has had several careful owners does nothing to contradict that. If I needed a fiver again, I would have it back like a shot! If it had any other name on the headstock, it would be selling for twice this price.
  22. What a bizarre-looking bass! How long has that particular variant been around? I've never seen that pickup arrangement on a Fender bass - let alone a Jag!
  23. I must say that I really like TKS threads. Just lots of nice compliments and happy customers - no nasty comments and sh1t-stirring from people who have never used the gear and have no intention of ever doing so! Keep it up folks!
  24.
Stunning... The mids and highs on these things are a joy to behold. Running one on its own sounds fantastic, but running the two of them is like an exponential increase in awesomeness.
So you like 'em then?
  25.
20 years, wow, it must've felt like part of the family!
Yes - it certainly needed its own room...
