Tips for learning how to do backing vocals while playing
Conan replied to BassYerbouti's topic in General Discussion
If you master this, does it also make the Bass Face go away???
It can... but bizarrely it may involve the appearance of "backing vocals face" - which inexplicably seems to mean closing one's eyes... -
I kind of assumed that people would be able to look at our signatures and see for themselves, but now I'm wondering how many people "hide" sigs? Especially as so many of them are so bloody long!! Anyway, I now have five basses - which is the greatest number I have ever owned In simple terms - one Status and four J basses!! And, yes, the Js do all sound and feel different (especially the fretless one, which goes without saying I suppose!). Status series 2 1986 Fender Geddy Lee Jazz Bass (CIJ 2007) Fender Standard Jazz Bass (MIM2009) No-name chinese (I think) J copy - defretted by the Bass Doc J&D brothers 1975 Vintage J bass (2014) In the last three years or so I have also owned (courtesy of this place!): Spector Euro 4LX Carvin XB75P Fender Geddy Lee Jazz Bass (A different one!) Fender Marcus Miller Jazz Bass (CIJ 2006) EBMM Sterling Now I really want a P bass!
Try not to get too near the mike, you are singing backing vox so you dont want to drown out the singer.
Really? I find the opposite! Lips right on the mike, and make shure (see what I did there?) that the mike is properly aligned. That way, you don't have to shout or strain your voice (which also helps with pitching). It also means that the mike doesn't have to be up so loud that it feeds back or picks up other instruments. Another good reason to strengthen/project your voice... If you are louder than the singer, then it's the job of whoever operates the PA (which in our case usually is the singer!) to fix that. -
if the singing messes up the groove then someone else should sing it.
Definitely! Most punters don't really listen to the bass, but they feel the groove. Mess that up and you are compromising your role as a bass player (IMO). Depends on the music of course... It's probably easier of you are composing original material, because you can always adapt the vocal to suit the bassline or (more often) change the bass part to suit the vocal. If you are doing covers, check to see who sings the lead and backing vocals on the original. Do they do it live? Is it the bass player? If they can do it, then with practice so can you! As someone else said, playing bass and singing is generally much harder than playing guitar and singing - especially in any type of blues-based music genres. -
They make a lot of noise for a three piece! This particular track sounds a bit like a Michael Jackson out-take, but it's OK. A bit more "space" and deciding when not to play might be good... But Linder is a pretty awesome bassist IMO. He clearly has mastery over his instrument (oo-er!), but could maybe learn to play with a little more taste (i.e. economy). But any criticism is probably based more in jealousy than anything else! I wish I could play like that - but if I could, I probably wouldn't play like that...
Jimmy Haslip....
Indeed. And I've always wondered how the heck he manages to slap on an upside-down bass!!
Have a look at the price of the Industrial Radio system
http://www.youtube.c...jeP2SnKXnk#t=44 Impressive stuff! Although I'm not sure I could find a use for that in my band... Can't seem to find a price though. Ah - now I have...
I found it far simpler to learn some basic keyboard technique.
And then have to buy a keyboard... and a separate amp to play it through - hardly a quick and cheap fix!

My Jack and Danny Brothers J bass (£119!!) gets gigged as often as my Fender Geddy Lee - and far more often than my Status! The quality of that bass for the money is astounding. Even if it had cost £500 I would have been impressed

We're all individuals, and when we try to sell (or buy) something - that individualism shines through. Everyone does things differently. It's what makes buying (and, to a lesser extent - selling) on here such an interesting experience. For example, there is a bass currently for sale that I used to own, and sold on here a while back. It has been through several owners since, and is currently for sale for nearly 50% more than I let it go for. Who's the fool? If you don't like the price, you don't have to buy. What's so complicated about that?
what do people reckon?
Focus whole-heartedly on what is most important to you at the present. If that is your family - then the band is just going to have to accept that. If they make a fuss, then they are not the kind of people you want to be spending your free time with IMO. Best wishes to you and your family. It's s tough time
Here's a clip of one played mighty well!
Mighty well indeed! And he's a member on here too To be fair, such an accomplished player could make any bass sound great - but that Vintage does have a very nice sound...
What about the 70's fender set? seems a logical place to start!
Does the Jag have the same pickups positioning as a J? If so, sixties or seventies placing? If the Jag has the sixties positioning and your '78 J has the seventies (as I believe it should...) then that may account for some of the difference in tones. As far as pickup recommendations go - I'm a fan of EMG (unless you want something more raunchy) and Wizard (who are now back up trading as HotRod - http://hotrodpickups.wordpress.com/). I am also quite interested in the Entwistles...

Bass with just a jazz bridge p/up - does it exist?
Conan replied to electric nate's topic in Bass Guitars
Schecter Blasko sig? Not a J pickup but a single EMG right down by the bridge. Long discontinued but very no-frills. And very metal.
http://basschat.co.uk/topic/57517-fs-schecter-blasko-signature-bass/
