  1. Got the magnets out 67x13x5mm. Can't find any alnico or ceramic magnets in this sizing commercially. Can find 67x12x5 neodymium... Not what I'm looking for though Anyone know where I can get alnico 2, 3 or 5 in that size? Anyone know why the bobbins would be wrapped in copper foil like this? Only other observation is that one bobbin was wax potted and the other wasn't. Maybe a QC failure that lead it coming to the general market?
  2. Yeah, it's definitely an oddity in the Warwick world. I'm currently in a reggae/ska band so the darker tones from it work well for me, but the general consensus is that it's not a popular pickup. Yep, mine is a German made SSBO too. Trying to find alternative magnets of the same size is proving a struggle.
  3. If anyone is interested, the bar magnet is 67mm long and 5mm wide. Depth still to be uncovered (in all meanings of that word). So although it is a firebird-like construction, the dimensions are way different.
  4. Yes. As far as I can tell though, it is indistinguishable from the genuine one I own. Also... It's a bit of a strange pickup to fake. They're not desirable. In any case, I'll preserve and see where I get to with this little distraction.
  5. I've had a German made Warwick Streamer standard for... 23 years now. The pickup in this thing has always been a mystery. MEC don't sell them on their website, and I'm a curious sort. So you can buy the pickups on AliExpress... I've potentially wasted £22.99 here just to satisfy my curiosity. I'm assuming they have fallen off the back of the lorry that was delivering them to where ever the Warwick Rockbasses are made. So I bought one, solely with the intention of taking it apart to see how it is constructed, and maybe even swapping the magnets to give a different sound. I think they pickups are generally unliked... They are 500hz city... so much midrange. Personally, I do like them, but I feel I'm in a minority. Anyway, the pickup arrived. As far as I can tell it looks genuine and measured just under 7k in series. It is a completely sealed unit, just like the one on my bass. Whatever the goop is that they sealed it up with... its softer than epoxy, harder than silicone, and softens rather readily under the heat of a hair dryer. Pictures are worth a thousand words, but in short, it looks to be constructed from two Firebird pickup bobbins... WSC can be seen stamped on one of the bobbins. A bit of googling suggest that this might be for Woo Sung Chorus, who rebranded to "Roswell" "AB45" is also visible on the bobbin. MEC say they make all their pickups in Germany, so maybe WSC are their bobbin OEM. So what to do now? I'm tempted to melt all the junk out and try a magnet transplant; swap them out for something alnico? Anyway, if you've ever wondered what's in these things, or what kind of pickup it is modelled after... it umm... look like a firebird pickup!
  6. This might sound ridiculous but I have great success with the TC Electronic Forcefield Compressor
  7. Have posted a little bit so thought I ought to do my introduction. I'm 43, I've not giggled since my 20s, but currently in an embryonic musical project to get a ska/reggae band on the go with some neighbours. Not that I know anything about that kind of music and I used to play on a thrash metal band... Currently rocking my first ever proper bass, a German made Warwick streamer standard (have added a two piece bridge, finger ramps, and a bartolini preamp). That's going into a TC Electronic forcefield compressor and then into an Ashdown Newt, then into an Ashdown RM 1x12. Sounds ridiculously good if I do say so myself. Even 20 years ago whatever bass amp I had only ever got used as a monitor with the sound guy DI'ing me to the desk so.... Not interested in "traditional" amp setups anymore. Just got my pedal board and power supply today so I can now share pictures with my setup looking a bit less chaotic
  8. That's a fantastic suggestion, never heard of that stuff but I've looked it up and it sounds ideal, thank you.
  9. Any ways of attaching fingers ramps other than double sided tape, friction fit or screws...?
  10. Oh, now THAT is tempting. Tuner as well.... Drive should I ever need it...
  11. Hi all. Has anyone got any recommendations/suggestions for a pedal preamp that has a decent compressor on it? It would be used for rehearsal and small gigs with a 200w pedal board power amp which has only basic EQ on it (3 band plus scoop switch). Currently I'm feeding the power amp with a compressor pedal with the volume boosted, which gives it a healthy signal to work with, as I have a low output passive bass. Getting some good sounds despite how basic the setup is. The aim is to get a bit of compression just to tighten things up a bit, and a reasonably flexible EQ for handling the variations encountered at different venues, different speaker cabs, different bass drums to compete with. Ideally EQ and compressor would be in one pedal for the sake of simplicity. The Darkglass lumina booster ultra totally caught my eye, but it's a ridiculous amount of money to spend for amateur stage gigging... EHX Battalion - Compressor is very basic. Drive is bonus that I'm 99% sure I won't need. Walrus Badwater - same as above. and more expensive. Harley Benton Custom Line Bass DI-Expander - Threshold and compression for the compressor is attractive, would prefer a graphic EQ but a sweepable mid might do me alright. Anything else I ought to be looking at? I'm hoping Joyo have got a clone of the Lumina Booster Ultra in the pipeline...
  12. On point 2... there is no difference between the units. I emailed Ashdown to ask if I was missing out on any Ashdown tone by using my Newt guitar amp with bass.: Hi Daniel . the two products are identical in terms of performance and specification , so the answer is no , you are not missing out Ashdown have partnered with.“Trees For life “an initiative to rewild and replant the Caledonian forest as part of our commitment to Net Carbon Zero .
