2. Stop showing pictures like that, Dave -- you'll ruin me Cheers Mark
 3.
http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...mp;hl=dha%20vt5 The build thread for the previous version of that amp series from the prototype onwards, note the revisions at the end leading to the VTX series. Has reviews too.
Thanks. I'll have a read. Cheers Mark
 4.
with my experience with that type of amp is that they kind of get the sound and work great for studio stuff, but if you want a proper valve sound without the weight look into something like the torres amps bassman it only weighs 15.6kg and is loud enough to keep up with a hard hitting drummer.
Thanks, umph. Sorry -- didn't see your reply until now. I'll check out the bassman. Cheers Mark
 5. Hi, folks -- Can anybody help me out with their opinion on the VTX? Does the dummy load feature give as rich tone as an all-valve amp? I'm considering one for that valvey goodness without the weight. Feel free to PM me if you'd prefer. Cheers Mark
 6.
I chickened out... I'm having enough problems selling one 4x10, let alone 4.
I don't know much about Marshall gear -- but I thought they only made 4x12s for bass. Are these ones guitar cabs or did they previously make 4x10s? I wondered, since Severin mentioned there could be 15s in storage too, if he'd bi-amped. Cheers Mark
 7.
I heard from Mr. Markbass that part of the switching power supply feature set is that it attracts cats which help maintain a constant plate voltage and impedance ratio across the diode triode coil. Or something. ped
Either that or the vibrations give your cat a sexual thrill Cheers Mark
 8. That's a serious bargain somebody got -- I almost bid myself, since it's stored near where I work. But I wanted a clearer idea of what was there and in what condition, which he clearly didn't know. I guess he just wanted rid of the stuff. I hope somebody here got it. Cheers Mark
 9. Somebody previously mentioned a summer course in Brighton which sounded fun -- I don't know where you're based, though. bimm.co.uk Might go myself Cheers Mark
 10.
Just to add a bit of encouragement this is how Guitar Amp and Keyboard (www.gak.co.uk) started off - during a recession, in a tiny shop selling used guitars.
... while giving customers a warm welcome and supporting local bands, by all accounts. Cheers Mark
 11. I notice his website no longer has his mobile number, or any phone number, on it. He seems to want all contact through email. Cheers Mark
 12. +1 for Chris. And I'm not a great fan of Strats but I had a play on one of Chris's versions while waiting for him to perform magic on my bass. It was superb -- low action? There wasn't any. A quick edit in reply to Toad -- I rang on a Friday, took two basses in on Saturday morning and he did them while I waited. Sorry to hear you had problems. Cheers Mark
 13.
I don't, but I'll have to look him up. I'm sure he's pretty good...does he have a website or a group website?
He's a member of the UK-based metal band Shadowkeep who 'commutes' here for gigs. His myspace is here Cheers Mark
 14.
Alot i think
Oh, yes. But a Ritter is definitely on my Lottery-win wish list. Cheers Mark
 15. I like Ritters -- but that's too busy for me. I'd prefer it if they did the whole body in the yellow and blue from the lower half. How much is it? (doesn't matter -- I can't afford it ) Cheers Mark
 16. Welcome, Mr Fender. Do you happen to know Stony Grantham, another Jazz-playing bassist from Austin, TX? A slim chance, I suppose, but worth asking Cheers Mark
 17.
I doubt anyone would offer you $1M to sh*t yourself
They would if you were Tracey Emin and you called it "performance art". Or an "installation". Cheers Mark
 18.
First, the legislation ... along the lines of the Champions League, perhaps.)
Thanks for that, noelk27. Cheers Mark
 19. People who raffle off their houses seem to get round the lottery problem by adding a "skills-based" question to the competition. Entrants who get the answer right can buy a ticket. This from The Independent:
To meet gambling laws, entrants have to answer a multiple choice question so there is an element of skill involved and not a pure lottery.
And from The Telegraph:
To ensure the competition meets the legal requirements and is not a lottery, entrants must answer a "skill based" question before they can enter. Because the grounds [of their house] have a fishing lake the question is: "What is the cost of an adult full season coarse fishing license for 2008/2009?".
Is that worth looking at? Edit: Sorry, just noticed Originalfunster said much the same thing before. Cheers Mark

 21.
I live quite a distance from brighton (croydon area) , is there enough at GAK that it would be worth my taking a day trip
I live near Horsham -- so I'm not too near, either. GAK has a couple of large rooms full of basses and amps, not a huge number but more than Anderton's. There's usually a whole rack of Fenders (ten or 20), a few Warwicks, the odd MusicMan, Thunderbird or Rick. There's also a huge guitar selection, if you're into that stuff. If you're serious about buying, I'd look at their website to get an idea of prices before you go. Then haggle, using the web price as a starting point. They claim they won't match online prices, but they do. And phone first to make sure the bass room is open. They sometimes close it due to staff shortages. Cheers Mark
 22.
" ....Middle England (the old gits who moan about "young people's racket in pubs")," OldGits rule
OldGit, voice of the nation Cheers Mark
 23.
I guess it depends where you are. My local music shops offer a good selection. But then I do live quite near GAK !
Yup, take a day trip to Brighton. GAK's great. Cheers Mark
 24.
The ridiculous article in the mail is just rubbish ...

The background to this is based on a tabloid article and frankly my children do more research for their school homework than the journalists.
In fairness to the Mail on Sunday (not that they deserve it), their piece is straightforward and balanced. It's sprinkled with 'could' and 'may', indicating that it's all speculation. They only repeat somebody else's research. And the last line tells us all we need to know:
The Home Office said: 'This document is a draft and should not be taken as an indication of Government policy. Ministers have yet to take any final decisions.'
Given the paper's ultra-right leanings and hatred of the Labour government, their piece could have been a lot worse. I suspect, as spokesmen of so-called Middle England (the old gits who moan about "young people's racket in pubs"), that's because they support the idea of noise limits. We would probably have more success tackling our MPs about the issue personally than signing a petition which politicians can cheerfully ignore. Cheers Mark
 25.
Hi, sorry for my ignorance on this thread and thank you for all the really great comments. Ive taken the plunge on a valve head anyhow, i got a new USA Ampeg SVT-2 Pro at half price, which was just too good for me to refuse. Again thanks for all the help, it is very much appreciated. Sean
Where did you get the Ampeg, Sean? Sounds like a good deal. Cheers Mark
