the eternal question for pedalheads. i empathise. how about 2 small boards, one for synth, one for the other stuff with a blender to join them ?

just seen this on TB. although it is not the finished article, it is an interesting concept. an expression pedal to control the rate/depth would be a good addition. worth keeping an eye on at least.
Possibly funky reggae? But it's definitely reggae.
in as much as the guitars and keys emphasis is on the backbeat, i would agree. the bass is more funk, but the lyrical content and chord progression has a strong blues influence to my mind. with a rearrangement for a three piece band, i reckon it'd work at any blues gig. just thought i'd suggest something slightly different to the standards is all..

more of a funk-blues thing really, but awesome for bass. the eponymous l.p. is well worth seeking out, especially their version of Dylans' 'ballad of hollis brown', and their version of 'voodoo'. of course getting someone with a voice like Aaron Neville is the hard bit..

i used to have trouble finding the right space in the mix with two guitarists using distortion. try to avoid scooping mids, and even try boosting them. it may not sound ideal when you're playing alone, but will really help your sound from getting lost or muffled when everyone is playing together. also, get everyone to practise quietly at first. it's surprising how that can tidy up a performance.

my ramblings on Sheps' first gig here.. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...p;#entry1116401

i went to see Shep in full tap-dancing action last night. i couldn't believe how full the sound was, considering the line-up (1 x analog fuelled bass guitar + 1 accoustic drum kit). the depth and breadth of noises, sub notes and synth swells were very impressive, and each track had it's own unique soundscape due to the different combinations of fx and how they morphed together. the playing was varied too, sometimes sustained, relying on the expression pedals to alter pitch or volume, etc.., and at other times more coherent fretless fingerstyle playing. he's a funky man aswell as a pedal uber-geek (only pulling your leg mate, i'm only jealous ). the drummers' timing was solid, the playing very varied and creative, with great use of different snare and cymbal combinations. it was paradiddle-dandy, and created lots of cross-rhythms to switch easily between dubstep and d'n'b style rhythms. the audience were extremely receptive and enjoyed it immensely. i think he opened quite a few peoples' eyes in terms of how electronica can be crafted from more rock-based instruments. from the perspective of a bass-player who enjoys electronic music aswell as more traditional fare, this is inspiring, cutting-edge stuff. i would urge anyone with similar interests to go and see them, as i understand that it may become a regular event. for a first gig it was shockingly good, and Shep remained cool as a cucumber throughout it. do i have any negative criticism ? - well it could have been louder, but i felt the same about the DJ sets that followed, so that was a house PA thing. maybe i just like it stupidly loud. anyway, good work fella. i can't wait to hear the forthcoming studio results.
To be fair, anything around 45hz-50hz still has a huge stomach shaking sub to it, not sure 20hz would be very healthy on the body at volume!
i just tried a frequency test on my hi-fi, and i guess you're right..although 20hz was virtually undetectable on my wharfedales, 30hz was awesome ! i once heard that certain low frequencies that are out of audible range can cause unwanted bowel movements. that would be one messy gig. .. doin' the dubstep shuffle !
Not unless you really push it to extremes. Most octavers don't track very well below A so you're unlikely to get much really low going on, and much of the sound from an octaver is the extra harmonic stack all an octave lower, not the fundamental of the octave down note. What's the pedal? You'll see the cone moving tons and then hear the increasing distortion well before damage occurs.
is there anything that will deliver down to 20 hz ? for synth/dubstep tones a sub-sub woofer ?

Are some people not destined to play 5-strings?
phil.i.stein replied to Evil Undead's topic in General Discussion
I keep thinking I would love to play a 5-er as those low notes would be great for metal... so now and then I drop into the local music store to try some out, but I just can't get on with any of them. I can't put my finger on what the problem is, but none of them feel right. Has anyone else had this problem when trying to find a 5, or make the transition? What did you do? Just buy one and hope it grew on you, or stick with the 4's?
been struggling with the same concept myself. 4's great to play speedily (punk/metal/funk/slap) 5 is more of a slower instrument for me (dub/step, d'n'b etc..). -
