2. appropriate tune..
 3.
I didn't 'choose' not to read. It just never crossed my mind, as I was too busy gigging and enjoying myself from when I started. I just loved the audience reaction when the band was tight.
4. can someone point me in the direction of the library, never mind the page or the book..
 5.
Thank you good sir. IS a big muff any good and also good for active and passive bass's.
my very limited humble experience led me to conclude that the green big muff pi was an awesome fuzz pedal. i get the impression that it suits passive basses better than actives, but each to their own..
 6.
DHA compressor?
alas! no..compression already sorted .
 7.
No Worries. One knob and a switch might not be enough for some people
nice one centurion, like it ! yes i did say i was after a chorus.. so i'll look into a few youtube clips etc.. also i would consider p/t ing if anyone has a good x/over or line splitter lke sfx.
 8.
..It never hurts to know more.
that is the qoute of the thread. it's not essential to learn your scales. our western scales are just as limiting in terms of musical language as our 12-toned instruments are. we should all try to see the bigger picture, now that digital instruments/technology allow us to. the old guard-will just have to adapt.
 9.
Groove is theory. And maths is art.
groove is art maths is theory.
 10.
I realise that we all require different things. I also realise that so far, this has been an intelligent and rational consideration on equipment snobbery and the wider social and psychological factors that shape that behaviour. To me, snobbery can be taken at face value, but it is the implied social hierarchy that really interests me. What does it take for you to firstly construct a form of hierarchy at a gig, then to insert yourself somewhere within that hierarchy? Also, do you find you want to be higher up even if you assume you're not? I too realise that this is all within single-axis spectra and is at risk of becoming a 'theory-or-groove' type binary argument, but I believe we are better than that as a community and this is a good chance to show it. Dan
i can appreciate any good/average player. i just don't like snobs.
 11.
You see, I thought about buying that pedal but because it's so different. The sound it creates (apparently a mix between bandpass and ringmod) would further set me out from the crowd. Egocentricity encased in a genuine need to sound cool.
i bought it because i've never used a wah or a ring-mod before, and effectively bought two-in-one. i'm looking forward to it. snobbery really shouldn't enter into the equation. there are people who can drive a citroen c1 faster/better than some people would drive a nissan 370. it's what you do with it, not what it looks like, that matters.
 12.
EHX Neo Clone Chorus?
i don't think that will be versatile enough for what i have in mind, but thanks for the response anyway..
 13.
You see, I thought about buying that pedal but because it's so different. The sound it creates (apparently a mix between bandpass and ringmod) would further set me out from the crowd. Egocentricity encased in a genuine need to sound cool. And don't get me wrong, I'm happy to eulogise about my set-up and explain it all and offer advice as to how to do what I do better than me because I can learn and then develop, then explain, then learn etc... I suppose once you get to the heart of it it comes back to the friends episode where Joey suggests that Phoebe try and do something truly altruistic and she can't because at the end of it all, we are all self-concerned. I'm an unashamed socialist and a teacher; I thrive on collaboration and development but there's still a part of me that wants to be the best (or as my article rather startlingly describes it - I want to seen to be the best). Dan
now, are we in danger of confusing wanting to be (a) 'the best' with wanting to be ( 'different' ? in case (.. i am guilty as charged. bollocks ..'b' was not intended to be sunglasses that's why i was a mod/metaller/punk/goth in the space of 2 years when i was a teenager. . i still like to think i can see things from lots of different perspectives, and find it difficult to argue with any 'one' point of view. these days i enjoy punk, dubstep, d'n'b, classical, jazz' black metal, jap-noise, et al., i would not ever consider trying to be best at one thing. i would lose.
 14.
Prunes and custard?
i always wanted to try one of those. offer considered, but let me hold out for a while, see what happens.. after hearing pantherairsoft's soda-meiser on friday, anything by devi-ever is on the cards. also i have space for chorus or a looper of some description, keep 'em coming.
 15.
What did he say? I can't read..... Can you imagine how limited the internet would be for you if you didn't read? Now transfer that to music
yes i did think about that whilst i was posting, but i then thought about the fact that tech allows blind people to get involved. i do agree that learning to read and write does expand your possibilities. i'm just saying that it's not essential, and can also be limiting, if the pursuit of vocabulary for itself exceeds the passion for expression.
 16. as an afterthought to this thread.. i had the pleasure of meeting Shep (pantherairsoft)on friday. he has an incredibly cool-looking and sounding set-up, and was patient enough to talk me through the whole process. there was not even the slightest trace of gear-snobbery detectable in him, just a keen interest to share in the amazement of the sonic possibilities available from a bass guitar and fx. i really enjoyed the experience. i would hazard a guess that there is probably more snobbery directed against people who use effects than vice-versa., but i hope i'm not opening a worm-can.
 17. hi Dan, when i buy pedals, i'm not thinking about getting one-up on anyone, rather just enjoying making massive sounds. for instance, i just bought Mr.Foxens ring mod/wah, which has to be the ugliest looking pedal ever known to mankind, but i'm hoping it makes up for it in the sound dept. you are correct to a certain extent in the fact that most of us do prefer things that are pleasing to the eye, be it cars, basses, clothes etc.., but i'm a phillistine, and still experimenting. interesting topic though..
 18. O.K. up for sale is my Tech 21 Red Ripper. these are reasonably recent, a part of Tech 21's character series. it's an extremely versatile and expressive overdrive/fuzz/synthy thing specifically for bass. it is capable of producing all sorts of mayhem, from fat, deep fuzz through to more clanky 'rippy' distortion, with almost envelope filter sounds in between. it has a powerful onboard e.q. to avoid loss of lows etc.. edit..like the VT it is sensitive to how hard you dig in.. for this kind of sound i am getting similar results with my source audio mwbs and mxr blowtorch so this is going for £100, tin, instructions and all.. they are selling for between £150 and £199 new. this one's immaculate. i'm also open to trades/part-ex for other interesting pedals..so fire away. demo here: can do pics if required..
 19. let's put this in non-musical terms. Q. do you need to be able to read to communicate with other people ? A. ..no
 20. how are those withdrawal symptoms going Shep ?,.....................err, Shep ?? Shep is hunched in the corner of the room, simultaneously shaking, dribbling and chanting 'moogerfoogermoogerfoogermoogerfooger..'
 21. wow, they are great pieces of kit for beefing up small/practise amps. i'm keeping mine. it's not a tool i'd like to be without.
 22. hi, great video. your english is better than mine, and i'm english. very cool stuff. it will be on my list. keep up the good work !
 23.
Right, I'm planning for my build. I've already had some wick advice from Robbie (RIM) with regards to my thru-neck design and finishing and now I need some advice on something else! Basically, I'm really liking the look of Piezo pickups. I want to create a bass without an actual visible pickup on the front of the body and I've seen Piezo pickup'd basses achieve that look. But I have absolutely zero experiences with them. i've never played a Piezo bass and so I have no idea how the electronics part of it works. I'm also planning on having only 2 knobs, a volume and a tone as I won't be having more than one pickup to switch between Is it as simple as buying a 6-String Piezo Bridge, soldering it to a pre-amp, and then soldering it to a tone and a volume knob? Any help appreciated! Truckstop
it should be, but retaining the bottom end will be your challenge. i await more experienced responses.
 24. traded with lloyd recently. everything went smoothly. pleasant to deal with, both online and over the phone, top bloke. i recommend.
 25. it was a total pleasure to have met Shep today, you couldn't hope to meet a nicer bloke. he kindly had the patience to talk me through all his fx and gear. unfortunately i am now GAS full, and i know it could all go horribly wrong with me and the bank. good man, highly recommended.
