What album?
De-loused and frances the mute. it's not overpowering in terms of 'tone'. but it does what needs to be done. I guess you do need to crank it up to notice, though..

Learning to play with fingers rather than pick
phil.i.stein replied to Mzungu71's topic in Theory and Technique
i started because i had a habit of losing my plectrums. no regrets. for fast stuff, you may well be advised to employ 3 fingers (a whole new ballgame !!, but enjoyable when it comes together) -
buy new lightweight stuff.. tweak it 'til it sounds good., end of.

thats redneck territory. stay well clear...

i have shuttle 12 no problems with switching 120/240.

Electro Hamonix Bass Micro Synth sample settings page
phil.i.stein replied to cm261's topic in Effects
i will buy a BMS soon... pedals can be confusing. i have an ehx q-tron which sounds rubbish 99% of the time, but occasionally with the right fuzz/amp gain sounds lovely. (i have no explanation, it's like magic). my latest acquisition is a 3 leaf audio groove regulator. now this is awesome compared to the q-tron when it comes to my bass (MM sterling). it just has much more variety of sounds available. i've tried fuzz before, in the loop, and after, and each have their own unique sonic charms. i'm after a decent octaver next, and after that a BMS is on the list... thisnameistaken - you seem to know these pedals well. which ones are the best (in terms of user/gig friendliness)? advice appreciated. -
What Do You Guys Do To Maintain Your Fundamental Tone When Using Effects?
phil.i.stein replied to Phaedrus's topic in Effects
Obviously this isn't an issue for guys who don't use effects . . . Thanks, Mark
...guess some people never bother reading things these days.. -
What Do You Guys Do To Maintain Your Fundamental Tone When Using Effects?
phil.i.stein replied to Phaedrus's topic in Effects
I have a dual channel amp with two individual effects loops and a master.(Genz Shuttle 12). it's a challenge to get to grips with, as there are so many gain stages/possibilities but, essentially i use one as my favourite 'clean' tone and one for fx. i can then mute/blend them as appropriate. fx do seem to suck tone though, so i recommend using a booster at the end of the chain (preferably one with a d.i. for recording purposes). i'm constantly playing with the possibilities, it's fun. today i received a 3 leaf audio groove regulator. it is unbelievably cool. happy days..! -
wtf ? there is no 'one' slap tone. i've heard good and bad. it all needs to be balanced to the other instruments etc. bass always needs to be heard in the mix, but at the right frequencies for the style.. i can kind of 'zone out' to some of tom jenkinsons or les claypools solo stuff though..

Self employed musos - What are YOU claiming for?
phil.i.stein replied to Moos3h's topic in General Discussion
Hi all, This will be my third year of having to submit a tax return, largely because I have done other jobs as a Photographer which I have received payment for. However, I also declare the meagre gig earnings (about £50-60 a pop for the weekend pub gigs) which totals less than a few grand spread over the year, inclusive of some functions which crop up every now and then. I'm hardly making a fortune from this! My accountants that help me with my return have historically helped me include receipts for the obvious, basses, amps etc. but what else can be included? I claim for petrol too, to and from the gigs. I really don't want to take the mickey, as I believe if you mess with the Inland Revenue, they'll mess with you in return - I want to be straight with all of this, but likewise if there IS something that can be written off quite honestly, then it'd be nice to know. Any of you guys in a similar position? Cheers, James
TBH your accountants are the key..they know the ins and outs. there are also the 'other' breed of accountants. they work for the government, i think ... -
I play a stingray 5 with a piezo pickup , 1979 p and a 1978 p bass guitars through the amp and they all sound cool and clear. its a beautiful sounding amp but i need something more portable now, wish i could keep it
just purely out of interest,..what are you replacing it with ?
Hah, you edited just as I was posting
i'm also wondering how good that thumb expression thing works.. nice concept !
But it's a fuzz pedal, not an overdrive, so won't get the sound that you might be going for. Beware of getting involved in effects pedals, addictive and expensive business.
true on all counts, i'm saving my pennies for that new Source Audio multiwave pro distortion jobby...it looks like the biz.. i've seen it on the thomann website. it won't be cheap though.. i'll try and find some links and edit later.. http://www.sourceaudio.net/videos/post/sou...istortion-demo/ oh yeh, Sarah, if you use high gain on your preamp this may be adding to the problem. try cutting the gain and turning up the master volume.. http://www.thomann.de/gb/source_audio_soun...ve_pro_bass.htm £150 is not too bad considering the 6 user-sets, blend, and sheer versatility. mmm.... i'll resist the credit card as it's starting to creak already ! next month deffo !!

try standing further away from your amp when using the pedal, and muting the strings when not playing. if you do decide to splash out on a bass-specific pedal, try a big muff, tee-hee !
Absolutely amazing, I'm so glad you posted this as otherwise I would have missed it!
they do like to stick these things on at obscure hours of the morning... ..unless you're a farmer or on class a (or both) you're unlikely to hear about it !! theoretically,,, could you ask the shop to mark the box as a 'repair', thus avoiding customs charges ? what's the deal there ? oh, payment-wise, do it by credit-card. protection is a good idea. the exchange rate is as good as can be expected at the moment..

I ordered an MXR blowtorch off him Saturday night. It arrived Tuesday morning by special delivery. As he stated it arrived boxed and immaculate. Considering it came from the Orkneys, that's awesome service. Respect is due.

i've been looking at getting an octave pedal recently. after being very pleased mith my compressore, i thought i'd take a look at what mb have to offer. it looks good on paper, with separate octave outputs and a 'dub' switch to just play the affected sound. nobody has had them yet, despite being advertised on their websites. has anybody heard one yet, or does anyone know why they are not available yet ? i have sent a message to markbass, and am awaiting a reply. ta..
