1.
Haha, yeah, I haven't seen how well my drummer can handle really up tempo DnB stuff yet, soon though, we will see if he can cut it, if not then I have another who probably could. TBH, the drummer is the weakest link in the chain for live DnB, if he can't cut it, or loses time, then the rest of you have had it. Zach
my man can play to a click, i think that's the way forward (for our d'n'b stuff at least) then we can utilise sequenced midi parts/samples etc.. drums have to be the foundation , and complicated fills can throw timing off easily, so if you have access to a small p.a. or monitor, try it out. do broach the subject delicately though ; no drummer likes to be told that they have sloppy timing, but it will help them tighten up their technique ! some drummers might complain that it makes things sound too clinical, but a lot can be put back with the right 'feel'.
2. bass - tobias amp & cabs - mesa boogie more importantly - the hands & brains of robert trujillo, tom jenkinson, robbie shakespeare.
3. +1 for bruce foxton. like i said at the beginning, i was fickle in terms of musical styles. i can't put my finger on exactly what i like about any particular genre, but a good bass line tickles my neurons like good sex. ain't music brriillliianttt !!
4. interesting to see how many people here who were inspired by the stranglers. i guess it's an age thing, but he was superb, and a great character to boot ! (not being ironic about the fact he was into his martial arts !). keep 'em coming !! particularly interesting is the fact that he played very basic bass guitars, nothing vintage or sophisticated, just pure style & aggression ! ..no more heroes anymore...
5. i'm now getting inspired to dig out a load of vinyl from my youth, and have a bit of a session !! thanks to everyone who's providing inspiration/ideas/input x
6.
Great album
how about nomeansno wayne ? i love that tight drum/bass hardcore ..
7.
No problem mate, just took a quick search on Talkbass. How's your band going? Zach
2 different projects at the moment. one hardcore/punk , a 4/5 piece, tunes written, no vocals as yet. the other a 3-piece trying to blend d'n'b (industrial rather than jazz) with live playing. i'll let you know 'what's occuring' as and when. my drummer is superb, he's the guy who turned me on to that jo jo meyers stuff ! take it easy !
8.
Simon gallup from the cure/gary mounfield from the roses. Bernard edwards although i didnt know it at the time, when i was little i was always boogying to my mums diana ross album,i loved my old piano.
the cure also formative for me. 'a forest' anybody ?, and that instrumental 'parrot' (i think that's the name) i'm enjoying this, it's a bit of in-chair pschology, more fun than seeing peoples' photos !!
9.
The Sex Pistols. "The great rock and roll swindle" The low slung precision, lack of technical prowess, but plenty of swagger. The idea that it only took a rudimentary ability to be able play in a band.
ironic, cosidering the clip you posted earlier today !!
10. again, the stranglers ! jean-jacques had an amazingly aggressive mid bite to his sound. saw him in peterborough when i was about 16. played a cricket bat style bass if i remember..?
11.
I can remember liking the theme tune to 'Space 1999' alot, especially the bass. What actually convinced me to try and play the bass was Bauhaus, because at the time (1986) I was a refugee from heavy metal and I hadn't heard a fretless before. That said, I didn't take up playing the bass until 1988 - the first tunes I learnt being 'Hurry Up Harry' (Sham 69) and 'Warriors of Henghis Khan' (Bad News)...
bauhaus also one of my inspirations, loving your avatar !
12. cheers zach , good man !
13. o.k. here we go.. as we all know, our tastes in music are highly subjective, and sometimes devisive (particularly judging by some recent threads). people like different stuff at different stages of life, and my personal tastes constantly change/develop/revert etc.. i've liked pop, mod, metal, goth, punk, funk, electro, hip-hop, reggae, d'n'b, industrial, classical etc., etc., in my time, and still like to think i have reasonably eclectic tastes. the psychology of music is a fascinating & exhaustive subject, and has a lot to do with our formative years in appreciating it. but, can you remember the tune or the band that got you into the bass guitar (specifically) ? be honest ! embarrassingly for me it would have been john taylor from duran duran. i was a child of the eighties, so that's my excuse.(i still rate his playing highly, it's just me cringing at the thought of being a 14-year old new romantic that makes me shiver !) so come on, who or what got you started ?
14.
Nerve are are sweet band-their 'Prohibited Beatz' album is great. Here's a cool vid from the recording of Justin Vasquez's album-again with JoJo Mayer on Drums. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ah-jfIe87I
he's enjoying that isn't he... i'll be looking for that album. wish i'd seen this stuff before. i feel like a bit of an ostrich now !
15. guys & gals - if you haven't heard of them before, you need to see this.. what a drummer ! pity we can't see more of what the bass is doing in terms of fx..
16. although this may not immediately answer your question,it may help a little with understanding the theory. http://wiki.basschat.co.uk/info:amps:impedance_and_wattage you should be able to find out a cab's SPL from the manufacturer.
17. i'd like to know when and where this pedal will be available. there was a thread on this a few days ago, entitled multiwave bass distortion pro, in which i asked the same question, but i'm buggered if i can find it now. can threads just disappear ?
18. here's my lightweight. 750w @ 8 ohms, < 25 kgs. yeh baby !
19. check that your pickups are screwed down properly. if they are loose, you get a definite 'squeak', it happened to me recently, and it was doing my head in until i figured it out.. edit - sorry forget that, i didn't read the bit about it being the same when unplugged !
20. whilst there are some knowledgable bods here, can i quickly ask something related to this ? i heard once that more ohms = tighter bass. is there any truth to this ? sorry, i don't want to hijack this thread, but i'm guessing that you may want to know if this is the case.
21.
The 8" is really good to me across the full frequency spectrum. Not sure if I need a cab with better frequency response. Any other benefits of a bigger speaker?
moving more air ? i'd best duck out of this one now, as i'm blagging it.. i'm a phillistine as my name suggests.. try asking Alex at barefaced though, he's very helpful.
22.
Why a different sized cone?
, i'm thinking that you may benefit from more sub and might not need to drive the 8" to the limit, but again not 100% sure..
23. i'm no expert either, but if you get another cab with a similar frequency response, you should get the 300w at 4 ohms which would make it twice as loud. you may want a different size cone though as suggested.. Alex is the man to ask..
24. awesome i remember reading that one in Private Eye a while back, but hearing someone struggling to read it makes it ten times funnier ! not being pedantic or 'owt but is this general bass discussion or just base discussion ?
25. if you have a genz already, you may want something different, but i think the new shuttle 9.0 is 500w at 8 ohms. it comes in black too, v.sexy !
