1. hi, infectious grooves one of my very faves... please p.m. me if nothing has occurred yet. no, i'm by no means as smooth as mr.trujillo, but am on that wavelength, and like a lot of similar, (U.D.S., fishbone, (early)chilli p's,victim's family, plaid retina, bootsy,.. list goes on... sorry, should wait at least a few weeks for previous respondent, and also they are more appropriate than me in terms of location and probably talent too.., i tend to get over-excited when i hear the name infectious grooves..
2. i still have mine, although it needs a good fretboard overhaul, and it's no longer active ! i think theres a short circuit somewhere. i still love it though, it's served me well, great for slapping ! the thing it lacks is sustain, so you just have to know it's limitations... i did have a problem a few years ago when i lost one of the bridge saddle blocks (not sure that's the right term, but hope you know what i mean). i eventually tracked down a music shop in Wales that had some left. they turned out to be slightly slimmer in width than my originals though, so i've had to improvise with a couple of pieces of bicycle innertube as 'padding'. seems to work o.k. i'd be interested to know if anyone else had problems finding replacement blocks, and if you can still get them.. although it doesn't sound anything like my sterling, it still retains a place in my heart (sob!) and i would rue it's loss...
3. i knew this drummer once, he got done by the police for breaking into a five pound note...got let off though, first offence..... ho ho bloody ho...
at least you managed to find a tight drummer...
4.
Whoa, what about the whole skinhead/ska scene - now I know a lot of skinheads were in it for the music but a hell of a lot of them would dance the night away to Prince Buster and then go out causing all sorts of racist mayhem (not what they used to call it).
very valid point ! it will need someone more intelligent than me to explain this bizarre social phenomena, but to hazard a guess, they were all just a bunch of thugs who would have beaten up their own kin for supporting a different football team...cat, pigeons, off we go..
5.
£1,800 I must admit to having been slightly apprehensive. It's the first bass since about 1979 that I've actually paid for. In those days you got to try the actual instrument that you were interested in. Nowadays, it seems there are fewer shops, with less stock, but more component choices available. Shopping online is the only real option. Anyway, fingers crossed!
i paid similar for my sterling piezo. don't worry, should be everything you ever wanted ! be aware that you may experience a fretbuzz after 2 weeks or so, particularly if you leave it out of case for extended periods of time. a quick truss-rod adjustment may be required. make sure that if you ordered it from a shop (which i did) that they have a trusted repair guy. as you don't want to void any warranty. testament to the mm quality, one tiny allen key movement and everything was 100% ok again, but it had me worried for a sec ! if you're confident with truss rods , then no problem. you can't always try the model you want, as shops can't afford to stock everything. an ironic result of internet shopping, sadly the way of the world..
6. is it 'cos they is dutch ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IjMTyDtEaM or is it something to do with the sinister presence watching from the wings that limited their commercial success ?
7. hi dave, there is usually a waiting time of up to 4 months for a new mm to get shipped over ! order one now and save up for the balance, thats what i did. nearly had a meltdown myself, but worth the wait. this is why the used route is a good option - should also save you the £££'s lost in the recent exchange rate hike too..
8. anyone remember Urban Dance Squad ? they had some good moments as i recall..
9. #102 gets my vote...
10.
I love him! Wish he would do more bass guitar stuff.
watching this at the mo.. no bass i'm afraid ,but http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqWvheuVf6w better than that http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlYBPuHeZxw if you r still watching, ignore advert sh*te, not my fault . honest.
11.
Hi Folks I was recently watching the 'Lost in Translation' movie and loved the soundtrack so much that I ordered it from Amazon. Amazingly, Amazon got the CD here before Xmas so I've been listening to it a lot these last few days. Turns out one of my favourite pieces of music from the film is by 'Squarepusher'; a beautiful but short track called "Tommib" which reminds me of Erik Satie, Debussy and Steve Reich amongst others. It's quite stunning! I can't find the actual clip from the movie where it's used but here's a YouTube cover.. I knew from threads on here of his quite considerable bass playing talents but it seems that there's a lot more to Squarepusher as a musician than I realised. Is anyone else a fan, and what else of his catalogue should I check out..? Thanks Nik
o.k. here comes a slight tangent.. i've already gobbed off enough, but, i was looking at your o.p. and realised i could have weaved it differently... i would like to recommend another contender in the multi-talented-bastards arena, and that would be Amon Tobin. he does slightly less bass-guitar biased stuff, instead, braziliian-drummer/percussionist/bass/noise ambient stylee. in fact, if those two got together along with flevans & lack of afro, with autechre for supper, you're talking fantasy boogie/chill trust me, check out http://www.amontobin.com/field/ ,
12. yep ! don't do it ! get your drummer to get a seperate monitor/backline i.e. an old cheap p.a. or keyboard amp & cab(s). they can also then dial in reverb (dub snare etc.) and have a nicely eq.'d bass drum noise for you to follow..additional benefit is click-track compatability (assuming there is a headphone socket & aux-in) ok. later edit.. 1) don't mud your bass sound with a load of other unnecessary frequencies 2) if you're only doing small venues, then bass drum should be the one to mic-up unless fx are required on snare etc..
13. hi, don't go cheap on synth, unless you want to sound like a cheap synth.... markbass sounds like the way to go at the moment, but only if you want to make that a major part of your sound. i bought a boss syb-5 recently, and although it makes a few nice noises, the tracking sucks !!, and that is the most vital part of the live utility of a pedal. the best noise i can get is a digital/gated fuzz out of it, and tbh you can achieve similar with a good compression & envelope filter + distortion/od. my advice - hang around and wait for competition to catch up with mb, or wait for enough muse-wanabees to lower the price on the deep-impact. btw - anyone want a boss syb-5 ? will probably swap for a chocolate kettle...
14.
Yikes. Not what I was expecting. Talented bar steward.
one of those players who almost wants to make you throw your s**t out of the window. step up les claypool, flea, jaco etc.. no.. the people who inspire you to get better (must think positive!!)
15. this clip should probably be in the funk and groove thread too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yL6DD-oeveg
16. damn straight ! guy is a twisted genius. some of his stuff can be 'challenging' to listen to, i recommend seeing him play live as your appreciation of his stuff will skyrocket. i like the old stuff best, like the "big loada" e.p. and the "hard normal daddy" cd. but there's plenty of other great stuff too.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4YdmXwotyQ check out more you-tube stuff..
17. hi all, a funky x-mas to you. this guy is a multi-instrumentalist and composer. it's cut'n'paste stuff, so traditional funksters might not be so overwhelmed but anyway try 'pretty from a distance ' and '12 apostles'. i have his l.p. 'unfabulous', it's fun.. http://www.myspace.com/flevansmusic i hear he's also collaborating with a similarly talented guy .. http://www.myspace.com/lackofafro enjoy..
18. hi dave, i was just looking for power supplies, when i came accross this, you may have seen already.. http://www.stringsdirect.co.uk/products/55...dition_hardcase hope you're having a good one !
19. Willy Williams - Armagideon Time. it may have been mentioned already, and most people will be more familiar with the clash version, but it's still cool played in the less punky style.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OBafgG9SpQ
20. Bastards...... The HMRC that is... +1, they (HMRC) sold their premises years ago to a company set up in the bermudas (tax haven), in order to lease them back from said co. (mapeley) at a low rent. Now it appears that mapeley are now charging more than they said originally (shock !) and that far from saving the taxpayer money, it's already cost more. don't you just love the thieving hypocrites ? see latest private eye for details..
21.
TBH that's pretty sad. The band's not what it used to be, and that recording is awful. I've seen them a few times, even after Chris and Kendall left, and after Fish left, but the best set I ever saw them do was at Glastonbury with the original line-up. They were the best live band in the world at that time I think. Now they just look like they're going through the motions.
yep, you are right ! my apologies, i must remember not to post when under the influence of norwoods magic medicine ! this has rekindled my interest in fishbone, though, so have just been listening to truth & soul l.p. again, and 'it's takin'over deep inside ' !
22. hi, i've enjoyed this thread so far, some great suggestions ! on the non-commercial / lesser-known tip, i c an recommend 'prophecy' by Fabian. the bassline in this tune could make an audience mess their underwear in unison. check it out..
23.
Thanks squire. I didn't want to post the clips here and step on lapolpora's toes, as he said he was gonna do some... but maybe he's been busy, probably got better things to do than make silly noises! But here's what I've done: Finally got round to making some clips. In the first clip I run through the presets one by one. <snip>
24. hi
I am a total neutral on BareFaced but a (much too) regular user of the Forum who tends to slavishly read most threads (yeah, I know). So here's my tuppennyworth: I perceive no "hype" for BareFaced but a combination of a few very regular posters (including mods) who have had very good experiences with BF and want to let people know about it, plus an interested party affiliate (ie, Alex) who has tended to post on (and be asked about) all design and build issues cab-related. The consequence of this is that there is definitely a pro-BF sub-community on BC. But hype, no. As cabs go they are clearly not for everyone, especially as people's styles, ears and sensibilities differ, but it seems to me that there are many more happy users than unhappy users and they fulfill a very clear niche in the market. Sadly Shockwave suffered from QC issues which frankly would hack all of us off, although it looks like eventually it has been resolved to his satisfaction. He has the absolute right to post on this though as he spent a large amount of hard-earned dosh and endured many weeks of frustration. I don't think he was wrong to bring this up as there were clearly communication issues with Alex which only served to prolong the problems. I think, however, there has, if anything, been more bandwagon jumping on the anti-BF side of things in the subsequent 'debate' than on the pro side. Anti-hype if you like. I for one would probably not be looking to buy a BareFaced cab as I am not overly enamoured by the design (I would prefer a more substantial looking exterior and would be prepared to sacrifice some extra pounds in weight for this), plus I am such a tart about shifting gear on that I would be worried about taking a large financial 'hit' if I had to re-sell what is currently a special interest brand (although I sincerely hope it can go on to become a very successful British music brand). However, I am open minded and if Alex produced a Vintage, Compact or Big One with sturdier exterior (and maybe a more subtle logo, sorry but these things matter) I would definitely be prepared to give it a go (my favourite looking cabs for reference are Mesa and Orange). Good luck Alex and - whatever you think of BareFaced - his valuable contributions to the Forum will be missed if he does step away. Mind you I never understood his graphs
hi all, new mm sterling h piezo, markbass compressore, sans amp 21 gb 12.0 shuttle bf compact and bf t'midget,. ! nothing beats it w/w you lot sound like a load of whingeing old farts. i can dial anything that needs be ...stop moanin' start experimenting !!
25.
I can see we're going to have to agree to differ. I will promise however to have a go at your Tulamore Dew. Perhaps what we can agree about though is that the distillery that has opened down England way should be mortared as soon as possible. Anyway, better not hijack the thread for much longer as phil says. Back to Stingrays!
actually, f~~k it , talk whisk(e)y if you like, as no-one's posting anything anyway, and i didn,t mean to be a spoilsport. IMO scotland has a more diverse field when it comes to distillation, but the irish stuff is equally worth seeking out,and can produce more spicy and sweet results but please don't slap me , it's just my opinion, and we all have'em ..love & happy new year/hogmonay/whatever !!
