HAHAHA well, the Irish in me does not know to laugh or cry. Considering you Scots make what can only resembles flavoured toilet water and feels like drinking razor blades. The only real Whiskey comes from Ireland. They even spell it correctly Now get your laughing chops around a bottle of Tulamore Dew and experience some real Whiskey I do like Talisker thanks to my wife but I'm not going to admit that. I also got given a couple of bottles of single malt, single cask 16 year old Glenturret that was distilled in 1990 and bottled in 2006. Tasted rank to me but the wife likes it and I can trade it with her for a decent Irish Whiskey from her
nice debate guys, i like whisky with or without my 'e' , now can we all rewind to OP ( no i don't mean Old Peculiar ) go off- topic when required. highland park is best of both weird worlds.. -
Cheers Phil. Nice clips, especially like the first one. no worriies, but don't let a wannabe funkster like me put you off , as these basses are capable of a lot more stuff than my feeble ass can play.. -
Just finished Mick Karns Bio entitled Japan and self existence and have to admit it was a very good read. Mick comes across as a sensitive soul who like most of the ex band members of Japan saw little in the way of money, a real eye opener on his life and thoughts on all things Fretless. He hates to talk about Basses and particularly strings, his attitude is refreshing in that he has no preference to strings its whatever is to hand and that he only changes them if they snap and usually will have the same set for 4-5 years. Worth a read if only for his humourous and shocking tales of stalkers!
i get the feeling that mick is one of those artists that could have picked up any instrument & make it sound good.. never mind his fretless meandering

hi dave, here's mine but with someone who can explain slightly better than me.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rNKuYuex1I it will only give a very basic idea of the bass sound, but is a good start.. and one found at 7.27 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=We_EeO9FrP4...esh+div-1r-1-HM the guy who does 'em is fairly modest but good ! enjoy.. -
I've had one for a couple of days, thanks to mark_random for great service. I agree with the points lapolpora made - this is a really fun pedal that responds well to your playing and sounds very fat and analog-y. Here's a long braindump about it (just posted this over on Talkbass too). <snip> Wow, what a long, waffly post! I've probably forgotten something - ask if you want to know anything about this pedal.
that was the most solid review i've ever read on a product. thankyou.. i already own their compressore and think it is the most important pedal in my chain. i can't wait to try out the synth, as the tracking on my syb-5 sounds like the signal got sent to alpha-centauri before arriving back at the amp (and i don't mean that it sounded any better for it) i will ask some questions soon...

hi, hope it all went well.. nerves are relative. playing needs to be automatic ! know your parts inside out to a click track (even if your drummer doesn't). one main thing that really helps though, is BREATHING !!! try to learn your parts without losing your natural rhythm of breathing, so even if you're trying to play fast, play lightly at first to a click and then dig in later when you're used to the tempo or groove. i'm not a hippy or 'owt but it just smoothes everything out and makes your playing less forced.
...nothing! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdOQjFagf4w OK so 'Hang Loose' was a new one on me. He's still my bass hero, I don't care how stoned and awful-sounding he gets.
absolutely +1 ! dude is a stoned genius. saw him in p'boro a few years back. kept asking audience for a spliff. i think he thought he was still in holland ! eventually someone passed one over. his quote "has this sh*t got tobacco in it?" - he still smoked it anyway, much to the consternation of the doormen. didn't see what happened to the kid who offered it.. he played bonin in the boneyard well enough for me though, and i got to have a good boogie with the singer ! BEWARE THE CRAW. or the doublestop perhaps.. -

hi dave, i bought a brand new sterling 4 h piezo last year. it cost a lot more than i had intended to pay due to the exchange rates, but i had my heart set on one after playing a few different mm's round my mates house. i ended up with the single pup configuration ,as when i tried popping the d and g strings on his bongo v hh (two soaps) , i found that there was a lack of space under the string near the neck. not having a neck pup made me assume that i might lose some bottom end & mid growl, which would have been a problem. how wrong i was ! this bass can achieve any balance of eq that i want to get out of it. also rolling the piezo on can instantly create a good slap tone with the right e.q. as it seems to scoop mids and brighten tone. I play it through a markbass compressor into a genz shuttle 12.0. and recently received bf compact and t'midget - a great, versatile rig with a power to weight ratio like Lance Armstrong. I am still toying around with my settings whenever i get to play it at anything near the volume it is capable of, but i always know that i have enough versatility with the sterlings own 3 band eq that i can go from dub to slap with the same amp eq if i needed to ! all in all i can't recommend the mm enough. i couldn't say anything about the difference between a sterling and a stingray other than the sterling is narrower in profile and smaller in body. i hear that the stingray is a bit more bass heavy, but i find that i get all the bottom end i need anyway. the bongo , however, was very different in feel, huge sound and i like it's marmite appeal, but i couldn't get on with the body shape when sitting down, it just felt wrong due to the small cutaway in the body not sitting on the thigh comfortably. hope you have a good x-mas & keep trying stuff out ! -
Ok, so what would you do if you turned up at his house, hearing from your mates that he's a sh*t hot - if not a little excentric - bassist?? Stay to further your craft or Run like hell ?? Personally, I'd be wearing the latest Nike's
you never know, his wu tang clan thumb technique may be just what you need to spice up your bass-life..
Hi guys, I really fancied a go at Tom Browne Funkin for Jamaica so bought myself a second hand OC-3, for the octaver part of it, but the sounds always seem to be sort of muddy, growly in a warbling sort of way, sort of flat, there also a sort of delay, it's so much audible more of a delay you can feel as you play...difficult to put into words Are these things junk or am I looking for something it simply can't do? Yamaha RBX-374 on std round wounds, thru a lil' Orange Crush 20w practice amp This guy describes how to get the effect thru an octaver but as a rookie I'm not up to speed as I could be http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9IuItsLzuc cheers for the help guys
oh yeah, forgot to ask, what size speaker do you have ? i would presume that larger cones will produce lower octaves more efficiently (depending on quality, of course..) but i may have opened a can of worms as i am not sure about that theory at all, maybe someone else could clarify..

hi iconic, i'm hoping someone responds to this thread who has had some experience in octavers, as i am looking to get one soon..so sorry i can't offer any insight into your particular pedal. BUT i recently bought a boss syb-5 synth pedal recently,(on the strength of the online demo) and am startying to regret it. it simply does not respond quickly enough to playing frequent notes. i have only really found one useable live sound (a kind of digital fuzz), the other waveforms seem to follow my playing too far behind the initial input. i am therefore interested to see if this is a common problem with boss pedals. my favourite new pedal is my markbass compressore, so i'll be looking at their octave and synth pedals when finance permits, unfortunately i haven't seen enough reviews yet to make a decision..anyway good luck !

Hi all, newbie here ! received my barefaced compact & t-midget a couple of weeks ago..yes it took longer than intended by alex, but i have to forgive him, the guy answered every enquiry by e-mail very promptly and reassured me that all would be good in the end..i'm glad i waited. i use a genz benz shuttle 12.0 so i get 2x375 watts @ 8 ohms in a package that weighs about 25 kgs (sorry, not anal enough to actually weigh it !) the whole thing fits into the boot of my saloon car, and is stupidly loud. i will post more detailed reviews of it soon (maybe on the lightweight thread), but for now all i can say is that this particular combination of amp & cabs is gobsmacking. a variable tweeter on the midget can cut through anything as clear as a bell. the compact still needs more high volume playing to really get as much as it can give, but i will persevere .. my drummer didn't really take me seriously when he lifted up the compact. he couldn't believe the quality of the sound at volume coming from such a small rig, and he's a seasoned player who's played with some big bands before.. i have no problems with the build quality at all. yes the handles appear a bit flimsy, but the cab weighs f-all anyway. oh yeah, in case you're wondering why i chose this combination, i like u.s. hardcore punk, drum'n'bass, dubstep, funk and a few more uncategorisables.. the genz on its own is very transparent, so you can struggle to get a dirty sound out of it (tube channel better than f.e.t. channel for grind) but a good combination of pedals blows the sound beautifully. i start with a markbass compressor and a sansamp and continue from there with the freaky noises. anyway enough already.. i'll continue my review when i've had tha chance to compete with 2 loud guitarists instead of just 1 !
