Ahh, got a reply..... it's not a Fender, doesn't know year, make, or model... ....a VERY cosmetically challanged 'Encore/Westfield/Harley Benton etc stylee' copy? scrub that even a Westie has a proper truss-rod adjustment bezal...my pound shop Nevada hasn't though

..my old wooden box trailer has wood like that from being left out in the rain, snow, sleet and hail...reminds me I should get around to replacing the wood on that. Bit of a saucy/cheeky/moody/snidey ad' too, although it declares Fender, it doesn't say anything else..could it of once been a MIM'J?

T'was reading about Fender during the '80's, seems very messy era indeed, old odds and sods bolted together, weird serial numbering, strange short order runs, differing opinions on weather heel end or neck end adjusters per year/per bass.... the usual guff. ... then I found a few references to 1985-1987 with Fender U.S. building NO bass's whilst production was being transferred & Fender being sold. Any U.S. Std Fenders actually being made in Japan but with US neck decals. Only the Vintage reissue series being genuine a truely U.S. built bass...any truth in all this? cheers

Warning...I know bugger all about earning money from a bass but this may help..or not! I had a customer 3/4 years ago who made his living playing bass, nice enough guy, session player. I asked the same question just how can you earn a living plucking a string for fun....what with me being a bedroom noodler of 3 months at that time. He told me most of his work came from TV and radio adverts of all things...but I sh*t you not, he could read sheet music like most people read a newspaper, I guess with studio time being expensive it would be expected of a 'paid player'...he told me he was endorsed by Fender so must of been a bit of a name...I can think of one. ....he said he would send me a Fender as he had a few kicking around and got a great deal from me as I'm a sucker for a hard luck story, wife left him etc....did he send me one...what do you think

I thought it would have been the Yamaha RBX-170, judging by the amount kicking around on fleabay..and a better bass I would say.
Even the mighty Fender are prone to spouting marketing BS I'm on a budget but it doesn't fit my needs.
maybe the Affinity Jazz is the worlds second best selling bass and that may fit your needs

great find ...Maidstone my old haunt, where is Rafters? ...makes me want to dig out my old Spyro Gyra stuff.

....big drum roll....the humble Squier Affinity P bass.....well it is according to the Fender Squier website and I quote "Squier By Fender Affinity Precision Bass, Brown Sunburst — The Squier Affinity Precision Bass is the world's best-selling bass because of its unmatched value. It feels good, sounds good and fits the needs of any player on a budget." I never knew that

I've owned two VMJ 70's, both very good playing, well balanced & well finished bass's even under the hood where the devil is in the detail, even faux cloth wiring & IMO look stunning for not a lot of money. I should add my 1st VMJ 2010 was a heavy old thing though but still nice enough so there must be a fair bit of difference in the woods, but to be fair wood is not a 100% consistant matirial. The very early 1st ones (2007 on?) could be a tad patchy on build & were built by a different sub contractor to Cort later issues...the serial tag letters are meant to be different on the early ones denoting India? The fretwork on both mine was very good but I can get an even lower action on the later one which is a late 2011 build...could just be these two bass's? ...quite a few flavours to choose from now in the VMJ range, they all now have maple necks....natural, red candy ( ), white are the 70's all with black blocks. Natural, 3TS, black '77 with white blocks are the 77's..ohh and just to muddy the waters there are still some VMJ's in 3TS with rosewood and dots kicking around...old stock? ...there was a limited run of a 1000 (erm, well, not so limited!) which was a VMJ 70's FSR 3TS, maple neck & black blocks. ...I've dropped a .01 uf cap in my latest one, so it does a real motown thump with tone down, but still bright when tone up. ...dating them from the serial tag is easy, its just the first 2 numbers...later ones are ICS...I for Indonesia, C for Cor-Tek (Cort) S for Special run...they all are though! ...Jaguar bass's....never tried one, I'm sure they are fine as most later Squier stuff is really, but ooh that Jag' 'tis a fugly looking thing to me and I'm very shallow http://www.gak.co.uk...-rosewood/44242 http://www.gak.co.uk...ded-amber/85233 http://www.gak.co.uk...pic-white/85226

Just been messing with pup heights on my P bass...the closer it is to the E string it does seem to loose some depth to its sound....I'm wondering if the 'extra magnetic pull' from the pup on the strings means they don't vibrate correctly in some way...great attack though, but sustain dies off a tad quicker...not scientific obviously but if anyone else is bored worth a go?

Good shout, I saw that earlier and thought, sound price for a tidy bass, great players...they are still (maybe always be?) crimially underpriced for what they are. They also don't seem to have the pup and Amp probs of the Aria SB of this vintage. I owned the same model but in natural, I think the black ones look far better.
Rolling the tone control off does actually boost the lows on a standard passive tone control - the Fender American Specials feature a 'greasebucket' tone control that rolls of highs leaving the rest alone. I bought one of these in a wiring harness from KiOgon but ended up preferring the original setup!
tone control on a passive only cuts treble...no bass boost per se...unless ive missed something?

Strange that someones posted that a jazz can sound 'bassier'....ive been flipping bass!s all this week and i agree that a solo front pup on a jazz does sound...well...has a warmer bass sound to it. but i would take a poke under the hood...check wiring and cap' value too.

I thought LP blue and/or the honey were/are standard colours....pretty bass though and i suspect they use the same neck as a vmtb...which was the best neck ive owned -
