1. Congrats great news ..a bass uke'...maybe want to check paint finish for lead....you may of forgotten some nippers chew more stuff than a puppy!
2. The wet 'n dry sleaves idea sound great to me....bit of concrete acid on the hardware...jobs a good 'un
3. Send it to a mate 'return' using 24hr parcelforce!
4. ....just when yoyu thought you'd seen every possible way to ruin a bass (no offence MDP) this comes along....simply mind biggling!
5. Cheers guys
6. yeah, nice looking thing, very tempting actually...are they any good though?
7.
Yes it starts at £80 but it has a reserve. It depends on what the reserve is as to whether it's cheap or not.
Wow is that how it works?
8.
Still some time left in the auction. AFAIC the real bidding only happens in the last 15 seconds, the rest of the time is viewing time. Plus its collection only. That always limits your market.
Ahh, didn't see the pick-up only! I was bidding on Yamaha BB a few months back, went from something like £38 odd quid all week to £190'ish in the last 20 mins!
9. found this up for sale, strange mix of SB looking head with late 80's style body...I like the look....not much on the web about them, apart from a mention about Faith No More (Billy Gould?), only up for a ton, not a lot for a bit of 80's nostalgia! anyone know anything about them? I think they are 88/91 Korean built passives, the SPT changes to SDT and other letters denoting the finish, black, chrome etc...that all I could find? any help welcome
10. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1970s-Guild-301-Iconic-Bass-Guitar-and-1970s-flight-case-/190877127551?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item2c7129d37f Now I'll be the 1st to admit to not knowing oodles about Guild 301's, but I thought they were a pukka card carrying classic and this looks a tidy one....circa 1977 onwards? From an armchair and seeing that a lot of dreamers are asking £250 plus for a Satalite or Kay plank this didn't seem to be a unrealistic? What a fickle market it is for bass guitars. I mean the ad' even tells me it's iconic!
11. I quite like these, not sure why as they are a bit fugly to me, but they sort of shout "I'm a cool, serious, brooding professional and I buy function & tone over form" if Louis Balfour played bass... ...these Cardinal fuglies do seem to be cheap though, this one maybe on the strong side...looky here a Cardinal CSB 380...no bids yet and a start of £80 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Aria-pro-2-CSB-380-Bass-cardinal-Series-/321175024428?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item4ac785f32c#ht_166wt_1314
12. I'm really like the 'spotting what was it before the fake decal - don't know anything about bass's' listings but these two have me a little stumped. http://www.ebay.co.u...#ht_1678wt_6261 ....this isn't advertised as anything but a 3TS jazz bass...with the oft mentioned salivating teasers like "vintage laquer finish" and "60's logo" and "3 ply vintage white scratch plate" (is it 3 ply?), even says "could be a Squier"...but any ideas what it is? The guy seems to know his bass's, sells lots of necks in fact everything apart from the important bit of what was on the headstock pre Fender decal application? to me...the end of the fretboard where it meets the head looks wrong for a Squier...to much meat past the nut to me and a very Westfield looking bridge? Ohh he has another one for sale...this time with a Fender Mexico decal of all things....Westfield...Harley Benton? http://www.ebay.co.u...#ht_1034wt_7174
13. Lots of blingy jewelry?..rings, bracelets should help rough it up
14. Cracking bass the BB414...enjoy. i never knew the 424 has a bigger neck?
15. ...sorry how did i get here and do i cancel a post?!?
16. Different yet practical and a contempory classic gentlemen...i give you the FX4 Fairway! Diesel, auto, 6 seater, cheap parts, fix it with a socket set 'n hammer, 350k miles considered low mileage, the original people carrier....and its considered mandatory to moan about everything. can fit a piano in the rear too from what i hear.
17. Just to clarify and confirm..., asking price is 999 sterling? Cheers
18. I wouldn't knock those post 2009 Mexican Fenders, there appears to have been a big step change in quality and possibly more importantly, their consistancy...I miss mine a lot. No matter what, to me, a bass with Fender written on the pointy end seems to feel...well, better, I'm shallow and easily impressed though. ...as to the OP's question I'd prefer to buy another bass, a little like tuning (spending money!) your car, overall it's simply easier and better long term to get a faster/better car in the 1st place....those upgrade costs are hard top claw back...but modding a bass you know and love can be good fun...or painful... depending on how sucessful you are, or:- "The answer to these questions is always the same....... BOTH!" Yup!
19. Ohh, I didn't wish this to turn into another pick v finger thread, just wanted to understand why the step change, the poorer quality amps from these eras simply didn't occur to me....strange thing though, across the pond some of those old amps are making some strong money indeed
20.
3. It looks a lot cooler, always think bass players who use their fingers and have the bass up round their necks look like geeks. just my opinion of course, and I play in a punk band where using a pick is almost compulsory
must be tough though?
21.
The era of modern musical instruments being money-making investments is long gone. It only worked in the past because little value was placed on them and therefore you could buy them very cheaply. There's plenty of stories of people buying and selling instruments for a pittance in this thread alone. Nowadays these instruments have plenty of value assigned to them. In a lot of cases IMO it's been very much exaggerated - just look at all those nasty cheap Japanese instrument from the 60s and 70s with price tags in the hundreds of pounds. People only bought them back then because they couldn't afford anything better. Have they suddenly become great instruments in some miraculous way? No. Of course not. It's mostly nostalgia at work. Especially when right now you can buy something new that as a musical instrument functions far better. If you buy a new Fender and use it but look after it you might not loose too much money in real terms if you should need to sell it, but to make a decent profit on one you need to either be very lucky and but very cheap or a time machine to go back at least 30 years.
good points:- I wonder if the internet has helped drive up prices of old instruments over the recent'ish years?....there's much talk around car prices (classic and modern s/h) that the internet has/hasn't helped depending on if you are a vendor or a buyer? Same amount of cars around but more interested people coming to the party, equals higher price?
22. Value = well, it's all about rarity and romance isn't it? Rarity can be measured to a point, but heartfelt romance can't, hard to even predict given how we are wired? These newer Fender's lack both facets, although they are playing the romance card for lots of models with RI's galore, so investment to turn a solid profit would have to be firm no from where I'm looking, although any Fender has going to have a decent s/h value but not a profit. Even the older ones can stuggle to break even in real terms unless you go back way back and that can be a fickle market. ...hmm...maybe you could get one that has a certain pedigree/provenance today though...I don't know, maybe something played by a band whom end up becoming a super-group/super-star/super-legend and thats maybe even harder to determine, you know along the line of "it was Lady's GaGa MIMP bass she wrote songs and writhed around on whilst playing"...but that's assuming she would have the durability of say a Madonna...ohh and played bass...and writhed around on, in her spare time or on stage PS short answer...it does seem that perhaps Jazz's fair a tad better than a P's?
