Fender P...decal outline, should you be able to see it?
iconic replied to iconic's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
reportee but still on going....it's a deal it's a steal...almost certainly gonna be painful for someone... -
Is it me or Ebay getting worse and a dangerous place to shop for bass 'bargains' it seems every old'ish Fender I like the look of for the last 3 years has/is/been: 1/ ...a dead cert' fake? An Encore/Westfield/Squier/Aria with a decal. 2/ ...a vendor who suddenly looses internet connections goes quiet when after numerous mails is asked the "so is it puka wth no serial number"? 3/ ...at the end of the super long description comes the caveat "maybe/possibly refinished with new body/neck/scratchplate/tuners/pups/ pots"...easy to miss after a glass of vino and the feeling of my god it's a steal everyones an idiot? Honestly, if I was really dishonest and not just a used car dealer I should be selling 'Fenders' for a living instead of used cars...must be up with drugs, prostitution and Gucci bags...but try going to the plod or trading standards and..well you know the rest, for all the whingers this is the safest place to buy a Fender....I hope
depends where you have the tone control, the cap will affect where and how the tone will roll off - but with it open it will have no effect. The resistance of the pots however have a massive effect on the loading of the pickups and therefore the tone. Pickup loading is more important that people seem to realise, even active basses- how the signal is treated before the pickup makes a difference - I like the cleverness of the stingray preamp where the pickup feeds at full volume into the preamp and the volume is after the preamp.
hmm, very interesting post (thanks)....I had a Yamaha BB614, an active PJ to all intents, cracking bass when everything was flat-out....but relly that PA EQ sucked, if there was no treble, mids and bass wound up it was very quiet, my Stingray 4 3EQ H never suffered this...I wonder if Yamaha had the reverse of the Stingray pickup feed system?

ohh, lead free solder....I never knew that! My tone pot is doing something, these Westfield's are as a bright as button (great for slap!)...if the cap' wasn't 'in' the circuit I suppose I would still get the reduction in treble, just not so much? PS thanks for taking out to read, and try and understand my poor understanding of electrons!

electricity as water, it's normally works as an analogy so help me out. ...following on from my other thread....simply changing the cap' on my bass didn't change the tone as far I could tell, I went from .047uf to .1uf on 500k pots. hmm... So, keeping 'electrickery' as water to keep it simple, I'm assuming:- 1/ the tone pot' acts a 3 way (in and two outs) variable gate valve spilling some of the water (electrons from my pups) out the back of bass on the floor somewhere into the ether...? 2/ cap' acts a filter membrane at the exit of my pot gate valve....? 3/ so a 500k pot' is a more restrictive gate valve in the first place and the cap' is after the pot....? 4/ so if I fitted a 250k pot (i.e. bigger gate valve) the cap's effect would be proportional....bigger? erm, appologies for the low level and somewhat painful assumptions here. My answer to such questions is always "water". Water flowing through pipes is a surprisingly accurate analogy for current flowing through wires. Current is how much water flows through a pipe. Voltage difference becomes the difference in water pressure. The pipes are supposed to lie flat, so that gravity plays no role. In such an analogy, a battery is a water pump, and a capacitor is a rubber membrane which completely blocks the pipe. DC is water flowing constantly in one direction through a pipe. AC is water flowing back and forth all the time. With this in mind, it should be obvious that a capacitor blocks DC: since the membrane can only stretch so far, water can't just keep on flowing in the same direction. There will be some flow while the membrane stretches (i.e. the capacitor charges), but at one point it becomes stretched enough to completely balance the water pressure, thus blocking any further flow. It also becomes obvious that a capacitor won't block AC completely, but it does depend on the membrane properties. If the membrane is sufficiently stretchy (high capacitance), it will pose no challenge to water flowing back and forth quickly. If the membrane is really rather stiff (e.g. a thin sheet of plastic), this corresponds to low capacitance, and if the water flows back and forth slowly, such flow will be blocked, but very high frequency oscillations will still make it through.

that site could explain why when I changed the cap' on a P bass this week that runs 500k pots from .047uf to .1uf (big step change in percentage terms) it didn't really change the sound too much, next week the p will be getting the 250k pots as well. edit....reading that again it seems the cap' make more of an impact?...confused I am?
Why won't the seller arrange the courier?
probably the same reasons we see on here...where to get packing matirials, how to pack it up etc...no, I can't understand why either, it's not 'rocket science'....(there must be a better phrase now, rockets have been around a few years now?) ...although the 1st time I sent a bass I was a little worried, the more you send the easier and more comfortable it gets, I guess?
I worked for a major UK courier company for 26 years, so I hope what follows helps? Once you've decided which company to use, ring their customer services to book a collection. You'll probably be asked a series of questions as to what it is you're moving, dimensions, and what the value of the item is, as well as collection and delivery address (postcode included). Normally best to ring before midday as cut-off times for collection are about 1pm if you want it to go that day. A courier will then go to the collection location, the sender will probably fill out a form and an electronic device in the driver's posession, and take receipt of a barcode number by which to track the item through it's journey. It would be wise for you have a record of the tracking number as well. As you're going to be the recipient of this item, I would get in touch with the seller prior to booking the collection and get them to make sure they package the item very well indeed. If it's coming in a case, make sure that the neck areas are padded out with paper / bubblewrap. Obviously more of the same if it's coming in a box. The sender needs to make sure that all the address details are clearly typed / written out and a return address is included either within or on the outside of the package (this is just in case the delivery address falls off and the courier company need to send it back). The reason why the item needs to be very well packaged is that it wil be travelling with other peoples packages and will be manually or machine handled more than once in it's journey, so a well packaged and sealed case / box is essential. Depending on how far it's going from point A to point B, you're looking at a delivery time of 1-3 days. One thing I would say is that "misroutes" happen -this means that someone or something hasn't read the delivery address properly and it ends up at a different delivery depot than the one it should be at - if that happens, the depot will put it "back in the system" to go to the right location that night. In terms of the damage thing, if it's sealed and well packaged, it should be able to handle the journey fine, but if it's a case that the sender has done that bit properly and it still ends up in a state, you'll have to take it up with the courier company and in terms of compensation, it may vary.
many thanks, that covers everything!

Fender P...decal outline, should you be able to see it?

I think I'll give this a swerve, shame I liked the colour..in answers to:- "It doesn't have a serial number? Do you know the age? Where made, US, Mexico or Japan? Any other details found on the bass? How long have you owned it, gigged it etc?" "Mate I've had the same questions from a million people. I haven't got any answers your looking for I'm afraid. I've had it 12 months, I bought it from a guy I worked with. That's all I can tell you. It is a very nice guitar"
