1. Rutger second only to macca for amount of songs sold with their bass playing onboard?
2. Fools gold.....a bass classic.
3.
I think the OP's point - as was mine from bitter experience - was that a lot of players who use capos don't understand enough about music theory to know what they are playing once they've done it. I'm pretty sure capos aren't inherently evil.......maybe. G.
Plus one
4. Did i see john taylor in one espisode....with a pick?
5. Interesting, what is a fender long horn jazz?
6. Wow, i never knew 60's jazzers had headstock adjustment, so wrongly assumed the reissues were heelend adjuster too... i thought that headstock adjuster came out in 73 and went out in 81.....tis true what they say you learn something everyday....especially with fenders! Lovely looking tool, enjoy.
7.
I just used an historic inflation calculator on two prices that I kind of remember from the mid seventies. There are probably others out there for different countries - this one uses UK inflation rates. http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/bills/article-1633409/Historic-inflation-calculator-value-money-changed-1900.html I was choosing between a Fender and a Rick and buying new - Fender was priced about £300 and Rick £400. Plugging those prices in concludes that they would now cost £2133 for the Fender or £2844 for the Rick. From this admittedly unrepresentative and small sample we can conclude that buying a bass as an "investment" is a complete waste of time - you're unlikely to get back even the equivalent value in the future let alone make a profit. Occasionally some buck the trend - like the aforementioned Wals - £800 new in 1984 - equivalent value today £2180 so you would stand a chance of a profit there if you could find a buyer. If you buy cheaply, it can be different story so the '61 Precision I bought for £125 in 1978 would have cost me the equivalent of £608 today! Then again, I sold it for £450 in 1984 - ho hum. Buy them to play, not to invest. Cheers Ed
interesting post....thanks for doing mathes...it confirms what i suspected.
8. Mexican by the truss rod access? Great colour!
9. Im still newish to basses....but if the bass market follows classic car values...and they have more in common than you would think...asperational purchases with a dollop of nostalgia...it follows that X must of been popular when new = classic vibe and vintage modified jazzers possibly when they finally stop making them!
10. The guy who related this tale came from Basildon area, don't know anymore than that. ....Norfolk inbreds...how dare you, just because I call my wife sis' sometimes
11. Hop festival wouldnt be the hop farm at paddock wood? Ahh memories

13.
What colour was the car?
Moon Dust & Raven...that's silver with black trim deciphered
14. Would/could household insurance cover anything out of the house when damaged/lost/stolen?
15. Funny looking thing, fugly to my eyes. I remember last time I saw this vid' I couldn't identify it, if I've been told before I've simply forgotten...it's my age. .....strange, sorta Yamaha'esque smaller BB NE body 'n pups with little Thunderbird'ish bits and an Ibby or older Yamaha Motion looking head? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibm41g_9YBI
16.
A 70's Fender is no real recomendation of any sort of quality, IMO. If it plays and sounds as you want then maybe go for it and it could be worth more in the future. But my '75 Jazz, 3 bolt was easily the worst bass I ever owned ...but today people would ask £1400-1500 plus for it..??? I think the main reason '70's basses are becoming collector-ish is because 60's are so hard to get.
I think 'those in the know whom label things' call this the Halo effect....sorta happens with most things when the original gets over priced for Joe Public so they have to go to the next affordable example that basks in the light of the original. .....I first saw this with old US muscle cars of all things, but also seen it with old English shotguns. With all the stick those old 70's Fenders seem to get from now old original owners these bass's are possibly a good example too....although I would be interested to know if they are worth what they originally cost in real terms? Wasn't a 50's Fender P the equivilent of over £2k when new in todays money? I thought, probably incorrectly, that the market for the top end 50/60's Fender's was softening up a tad, more sellors than buyers so a 'price correction' maybe on the cards this will/may effect the lessen brethen more so? 80's headless stuff seems to be creeping up and finding buyers, then a little dip then up again, 3 steps up, 2 back down...possibly a gentle trend there but still very small beer indeed?
17. This maybe an urban myth...on radio 2 last week I heard that the first Pistols gig sold something like 43 tickets...but the amount of people whom now claim to have been there would fill a Wembly Stadium Punk sort of passed me by being a weekender type soul boy, it got better with the Pretty Punk Stylee Sigue Sigue Sputnik though
18. hmm today http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ik9BEaBU7M0
19.
I can't work out what the car has got to do with the story.
Nothing at all my cars aren't trouble...usually!
20. I know, my jaw hit the ground when I heard this, I did find it incredulous that: 1/ The WAL wasn't insured at all seems the owner was of the assumption that his house contents cover 'covered' the bass...expensive assumption! More money need not equal more brains. 2/ The two guys who were the cause of it all by scrapping over best pi**ed bass player, did a runner after the scuffle, then as sometimes happens in these situations, everyone has memory failure as to names etc...although christian names were heard by those breaking things up. .... I'm guessing the WAL owner is 'trying it on' the pubs public liabilty insurance possibly because he feels the two guys are known to the landlord, but landlord doesn't wish to bubble them up and WAL man (WALly?) hasn't anywhere else to go with this? A sorry tale indeed.
21.
What tyres were on the car?
new Bridgestones on every corner sir.
22. Long storey short...guys buys a car from me, his mate has a WAL, it's not insured, two beered up idiots get hold of WAL in the break, fight over who should play it, bass gets dropped, damages the head.....ugly scene. ...so WAL not insured, the owner is now trying to take the bar owner to court over negligence....hmm...tough one.
23. Andy Rourke...didn't Mozza compare him to a Suffolk Colt, Atco, Webb or some other lawnmower.....what a twat, Rourkes basslines are what makes THE Smiths so very special a song within a song.
24. I remember proper talent shows like New Faces...now if that was Micky Most, he would of head butted her to the ground ... although this guy was the Guv'nr
25. been there, got the T-Shirt the funks in the fingers....& the amp!
