I loved Chic right from the release of that first LP all those years ago and still do. Funnily enough i was just playing Spacer by Sheila B Devotion (12" of course!). Nile Rodgers was great but Bernard Edwards made it for me. One of the greats for sure.
the 2nd Bernie line I learnt...good fun...but I overplay this to the extreme...Bernard had the good taste not too! this is a rare version...well not now!
Fretless Precision Bass ?
i think we may have a winner already....ive actually heard this and never picked up on it!!!!

The first one to post 'excellent fender' and/or 'talented Mark King" goes straight to the naughty stair...! For instance.....multiple threads on ....."my bass is too heavy"....only to read oodles saying "i didnt like X bass cos it felt too light" .....i think we must be a tough crowd to please at times! Any others come to mind.

VMJ....great bass but can be inconistant....my first although a good solid bass was VERY heavy to my feeble body. my 2nd weighs far less and the finish on the fretwork is even better and can get a even lower action.....the only difference is that the first was a 2009 build....the 2nd a 2012.

MiM scratchplates dont fit been there..... my 2nd pink one turned up today....took 18 hrs this time......this bass also needed a smidge off the nut....now another good action.
I really liked it too, even though to me it sounds more like the theme from "Mission Impossible" with the words to "Living in the past" sung over it. I feel a mash-up coming on......
both in 5/4 time...quite similar groove -
From what little I know, I'm guessing that HB will be fine...I really haven't played a bad bass with one exception which had a....erm history. I've also heard some fantastic playing on many a cheap bass. I sold off all my more expensive bass's thru ill health (I'm getting steadily better at the moment, but don't talk it up!) and was down to my Yamaha A2 which I can't see myself selling 'in the foreseeable future', I also had a Westfield P bass for the workplace and then my wife bought me cheap £116 new Aria jazz. This Aria bass blew away any remaining predujices for ever.... ....being honest buying my first Westfield cheapie first changed my ideas of 'price V performance ratio' big time, but a bit of me thought it may have been a fluke, the aria changed that. Now I can't see myself owning an expensive (to me) bass nowadays, in fact the thought of £700+ of bass hanging off the wall makes me cringe nowadays, I'd rather admire from afar. I've now got in the heard, a CV, a VMJ, the A2, a Squier std Jazz, Aria STB Jazz, 3x Westfield B1000's (ones my daughters') and a Jack, I still love bass's and as Stalin said "quantity has a quality of its own"..but none of these are dear bass's although all are 'dear' to me in that I like them. honestly I can make an expensive bass sound just as crap and a cheap one, it does help that I know more about setting a bass up well than playing well

bugger, from what I'm reading I'm gonna have to get off my a**e ....didn't Bootsy say that first?

[sub]Something happended a year ago, my ear got tuned into playing by ear far better than I ever thought possible (for me, I'm nearly tone deaf!) and since then I haven't been 'searching for notes' so much by using tabs and sheet, sort of made me lazy in a reverse manner ...just when my knowledge was starting to get there....[/sub] [sub]....saying I know the 'sound' of 'intervals' better sounds far more convincing....to me[/sub] [sub]thanks for the advice guys[/sub]

Although I've been noodling for some time now, my fretboard knowledge is sometimes found wanting Every other day I find a note, normally past the 7th frets I can't find without reference to another....you know from a an octave or a 5th away etc. Don't get me wrong I get there usually OK but it's not always instant. Saw these and thought I'd give them a whirl, stick them on my daughter's bass....no one will know they are for me They aren't the usual individual decals, but come in a strip so should be a breeze to fit. I always play sitting down but have a 1st gig iminent and thought, maybe im expected to stand around n play......ive seen blues bass players sitting but is this erm.... unusual? I can play standing but simply prefer sitting....im lazy like that...!

This thread prompted me to finally weigh my yamaha a2....came out at 7lbs dead.....and doesnt play any 'thinner' than any other bass ive owned including my old hernia inducing vmj!
-
If you think bass players are geeky gear nerds i'll raise you motorbuke enduro riders and mountain bikers..phew.....different league! I would agree there is much brand loyalty among. players....until they play a yamaha then they never look back!!!!

Mine finally turned up today....parcelforce's idea of 24 hour express delivery from last monday collection! I can confirm if you choose black scratchplate you do indeed get a maple fretboard n neck..... plays great outa the box, looks cool as a cucumber in what would be a match for atomic red/pink if you ever saw a 90s honda motocrosser....merest of tweaks to truss rod. This ones going to my daughter so ordered another for my own home p bass at 47 quid delivered....love it! Obviously no thread about a non Fender bass would be complete without the obligatory cliche's.... "it plays better than some US Fenders I've played" ohh and nearly forgot "better fit and finish than some US Fenders I've played!".... Set of black blocks on order from jacomo japan.

cheers guys -
Over the last few weeks I've had conversations like " ooh you know must know it!"..."that hippy tune"... "with flutes".... "and a great bassline"..."you should know, you were there, I mean you are old 'n stuff"....it's hard to describe a tune to someone at the pub! Well bash my gonads with an iron bar this gem is by Jethro Tull....I've heard of them, who hasn't, but to me all I know is that they were/are a hairy, unwashed prog' rock to me, I borrowed an album about trees or something from a girlfriend and it got all of 45 seconds playing, hated it. ......but now this tune is my current favorite squeeze, I need to know if there are any other gems from these guys...the bass player is a Glen Cormick I think? Be interesting to hear about this guy too? Educate me gentlemen please. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgQN6PiSg-4
Saw a USA SUB Sterling go for £230 on eBay last night, crazy.
flipside is I saw a Sterling Ray 4 Sub (the cheapest one) make £236 plus postage of £20....so £256 all in.....new ones can be bought for £270 delivered

I'd also add from a sales perspective as it's my job, that its tough out there and you need to know your market, and be realistic about prices....nearly everyone has access to the 'tinternet' so best price shopping is easy to do...I have had customers come from Wales, Scotland, even Germany and Spain for car sales, secondhand stock and the cheaper end of the market under £5K etc...but they ain't gonna travel for an overpriced car. Everyday on fleabay and often on here too, there are some bass's on offer than aren't far off a brand new delivered price to be worth the risk of a s/h punt....they aren't new no matter how little played, could be unwrapped and hung on a wall but they still aren't new, they are secondhand, previously owned with no puka warranty etc or brand new bass feely good warmth. Don't get me wrong I've bought lots of s/h bass's but it's hard to beat that nice new smell and feel of a virgin bass. ...case in point bass at moment.....no mention of how old, no mention of how many previous owners, unknown strings etc. Granted, it's still a stunning looking thing, but at the asking price and with the addition of a bit of properly insured PnP I could buy new and delivered for maybe less than £20 more.... and that's without being cheeky and asking for a deal over the phone on the new one....what would you do? ....many more other cases of well priced bass's on here (not so many on fleabay!) that sell promptly....'tis a buyers market and will be for a while yet.

That bb1500 dont look dear either...BIN price!

Would it sound better if it was called shell pink and that flea loves a pink one....maybe not!

plywood.... such an ugly word....cross-grain multi-layed laminate composite sounds sweeter wiki:- Plywood was invented about 3400 B.C. by the Ancient Mesopotamians, who attached several thinner layers of wood together to make one thick layer. They originally did this during a shortage of quality wood, gluing very thin layers of quality wood over lesser-quality wood.[sup][citation needed][/sup] Modern plywood was invented, in the 19th century, by Immanuel Nobel, father of Alfred Nobel. Nobel realized that several thinner layers of wood bonded together would be stronger than one single thick layer of wood, and invented the rotary lathe used in plywood manufacturing.

Just spoke with Magnus and got the £40 +P&P deal over the phone (thanks Mr Foxen ).....pink with black PG....for my daughter's use....eventually The pink with black PG B1000's usually come with maple fretboard...but Magnus seems to think all his are rosewood with white or black PG? As I said before, I bought a B1000 a while back as a beater bass for my car sales when I'm bored, sunburst/rosewood one and mine is a decent bass with no excuses needed. I spent an hour setting up nut, trussrod and saddles etc and she plays very well....& strangely, unlike the crop of more expensive bass's I've owned, the neck never seems to shift and that bass see's anything from -10c to +25c in a sometimes damp'ish/sometimes dry workshop....go figure

Ive a westfield b1000....surprisingly good and more importantly very likeable
