2. Early Elton John? He loved his shiney suits & those were the best glam glasses ever...Crocodile Rock?
3. Now, my music theory isn't too hot so I need small words when it comes to explaining this, so be very gentle! I'm still going thru my Beatles phase and this 'comment' has cropped up in a very deep discussion of Eight Days a week of all things, these Beatle boys composing really does amaze me. http://www.angelfire...rogression.html note they have transposed to C major but it's still a Lydian I,II,IV,I progression. Ok, so Eight Days a Week goes.. well it's in the key of D major, and chords go:- D major, E major, G major and then D major again & obviously being bassists we play around and do some sort of run over these chords So I can see why its a lydian mode as the 1st and 2nd are major chords and the 4th is a major too....but why is this called a V on V, or is it a case of it can also be called a V of V ...? Hmm, my thinking.....is it because if we took the key to be C major then the D (2nd) should normally be a D minor, but the V of V means we do the following, a 5th of the original 5th fudge- so G being the original 5th of C major, then we take the 5th of this G producing a D major many thanks for anyone taking the time out to explain this.
4.
And what are bindings?
Don't try skiing without them, it will end in tears... Maple still my choice.
5. 1983....are those the ones with machine head bullet type truss rod adjustment, as opposed to body end.....or did I dream that?
6.
Standard tuning provides simple fingering for many chords and the ability to play common scales with reasonable left-hand movement. The separation of the first (e') and second ( string, as well as the separation between the third (g), fourth (d), fifth (A), and sixth (E) strings by a five-semitone interval (a perfect fourth) allows notes of the chromatic scale to be played with each of the four fingers of the left hand controlling one of the first four frets (index finger on fret 1, little finger on fret 4, etc.) only when the hand is in the first position; otherwise, the four fingers must stretch to cover five frets. The separation of the second (, and third (g) string is by a four-semitone interval (a major third). The irregular major-third provides B and E as open notes, which is convenient for many chords. On the other hand, the irregular major-third breaks the fingering patterns of scales and chords, so that guitarists have to memorize three-to-four chord-shapes for each chord. Scales and chords are simplified by all-fourths tuning and other regular tunings, which maintain the same musical interval between consecutive open-string notes; such regular tunings are discussed below. Wikipaedia is your friend.
Hmm, that's just what I, err, was thinking, only put far better! .....so its simply easier to tune this way to keep it down the end of the neck?
7. These bass's come this variable brightness illuminated volume pots, and the tone control was never light?....even though the tone control has an opaque bezel.! Took me 25 mins to fit an LED, all be it a fixed brightness! If any other 'I.bass' owners wish, I can do a step by step guide? Wanted an A2 for years, it doesn't disappoint, super light, amazing suuuuuuuuustain, tight, bright and crisp tone, quite unique.....has an almost chorus like tone, neck is quite small, I was expecting larger from what I read? Don't seem to able to post pictures, anyway good enough for Prince!
8. I seem to get some eyebrows raised when talking open string tuning with guitar players, the pennies just dropped! I mean I know bass's are tuned 'properly' in 4ths and 5th open is a C....then I find that guitars use an open B, that's a third, then go back to 4ths for the 6th open being an open E. I'm sure there's a good reason.....why? It's taken me some time but the more I play and study bass I think they shouldn't be lumped together with guitars, seems they only look similar! ......what with strange devils tuning and cheating capo'o I'll be checking my change more often if served by a guitarist!
9. You've bought my dream bass, great choice, enjoy!
10. I do like floppy strings, any recommendations for top floppy roundwound? I normally use 45-105 Cheers
11. Ahhh, its all making sense....I think! My vmj jazz has the highest action of all my fleet, I think I know why now!
12. I have a b1000, their p bass clone and i love it, great neck plays very well indeed after a good set-up.....70 something quid new in 3ts. Mines light too.
13. My westfield came from Vietnam!
14. And what are C and D necks!?
15. wow, supersweet playing thanks for posting this
16. I've had a search but couldn't find what I wanted, or I'm not asking the right questions!?! OK, real newbie at this recording malarky, I downloaded that Audacity programe 2.0.2, took me an hour just to open the file ....so I'm playing along to a drop of Chic and I'm playing my bass thru the mic input of the PC using Windows, using the Audacity 'software playthru' so I can hear myself hitting all those bum notes....couldn't hear a thing before without that box unmarked! But, I've got a half second of delay between playing the bass and what comes already out of the speakers, that is my Chic tune. If I simply record without software playthru its in time but I can't hear my bass.... ... and another thing, the only way I can get something out my bass is to play it into my VOX Amplug and use the headphone output to go to my PC 'mic in'....I thought most mikes were passive, see, I know nothing! ...plug and play, my a*$e! ......I'm soo very sure it's either something very simple (me most likely!) or it's been asked 1,000,001 times before... any help most welcome kind BC'ers
17. Squier Vintage Modified P bass....I've been looking for one to complete my VM set on and off for a few months now, most seem to be white....
18. I have shocking technique, but I'm not a great bass player or famous.... my fingers are all over my fretboard like tramp over a bag of chips...having fingers like fat bangers that I've broke more times than I can rememer doesn't help me I'm sure....I look at the great smooth players and they seem to have fingers like racing snakes, all thin, long and bendy. ....I used to be a real golf nut, there were some fantastic pro-golfers who had poor swings (golf technique), more than one have had golf coaching to try and improve their swings only to find it cost them a lot of games and a lot of money...even the great Jack Nicklaus never had the best of swings, but didn't hold him back... I was wondering if the same exists in the world of the great bassists...?
19.
He has poor picking technique IMO the point where it makes me uncomfortable to watch it. If your going to put yourself out there as an example for others to follow then you should (again IMO) be doing better than this. Id feel much happier knowing any impressionable newbies were watching say Scott Devines vids rather than this.
Didn't know Scott did a lesson for Le Freak, I'll be checking his site for that...I love Scott's stuff
20.
IMHO his best bass performance is in 'Something'. You need to listen to it with bass turned up or on headphones to fully appreciate what he is doing. It's sucha beautiful song the bass passes you by unless you tune into it. Here is just the drums and bass from the original tapes.
thanks for that, I really never knew all this was going on.....drums sound great too!
21.
I have one exactly the same model, but it does not lose any volume when tone control is moved in any direction.
....you not using a compressor by any chance?
22. My beater Westfield P bass B1000 which incidently I really like, has a strange quirk in that if I set my tone control to 'closed', or 'bass' setting I loose quite a bit of volume (gain/output), something I don't notice much on my other basses. This is my 'at work' noodling bass and only ever plays into a Trace GP7SMC-8210H....as if that would make difference? ...any idea's? ...I suppose an explanation of what really happens when I close my tone would be helpful to me, I'm guessing as its quite a bright sounding bass I'm loosing quite a bit of signal, hence the drop in 'volume'???
23. found some isolated bass tracks around youtube, not sure if genuine, sound good to my ears, bit of bleed from the other players...for example? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkxi-3omo4o
24.
There are not many that do as much melody as Maca on bass, even the earlier stuff .. This guy does some nice covers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwwnhYPHkUc&feature=related
I love this guys playing, my kids call always him "Mr Spooky Fingers"....I have never seen such economical playing, fingers like eels...
