1.
The other thing to bear in mind is the speed limit for a Transit like van is less than a car or people carrier - 50 mph or 60 on a motorway. Car derived vans are ok.
Almost right, vans are 50mph single lane, 60 on dual carriage way, 70 on motorway. Car derived vans are pretty much non existent nowadays. On the subject of stuffing vehicles cram full of kit, if you really have to, try and keep it below Seat top height. If you can't I'd opt for a van with safety bulkhead. ....loose things kicking around the cabin in an accident (or heavy braking) don't half make a mess of occupants
2. Well I've never heard of them until this morning, googled, but still don't understand what they are for/how they work? .....it was in a review review for a bass I was reading.....
3. Great doc' on last night, Chas and Dave's last orders, never knew what a history these two have, and what talented musicians! Few clips showing Dave Peacock playing a yamaha bb, seems the 69 fender p took a rest for few years in the early 80's? Should be on BBC Iplayer I guess if anyone interested?
4.
I like the look of the Squier, is it a heavy or lightweight bass and does the bridge cause problems in setting the intonation?
Very light bass, surprisingly, looks like it should be a fatboy!.... by far & away the lighest of my bunch. No probs with intonation from open to octave 12 fret on all the strings, I understand why you would ask, sharing saddles. Good low action and the only bass where I haven't had to dress the nut down as I like it real low. Beware, the OE Fender TB pup is so hot I have to wind down the amp's gain when plugging her in, frightening if I forget after coming from another bass, even an active....and this is after I have lowered the pup! These TB's seem real popular over the pond in the US, I have read that some fit a darkstar for more highs, for me the OE pup is all I'd ever need. This is a real keeper, lovely looking thing, bit different & stonking value too.
5. Yamaha BB714BS And my Squier VM TB has one of the hotest pups and best necks I've ever had my hands on!

J+P in one?

Back in January 2010 I saw a 'more mature' Scots guy in a blues band just up the road in East Harling Social Club with a Jazz fitted with P pups sunk right into the body....if anyone knows this guy from the description He played with Dave Thomas who is very well known around these aparts It really thru me for a while trying to work out what this bass was? I spoke with him and it was 'worked' by a 'local' luthier...I was quite drunk at the time but can't be sure that local was as in Scotland or East Harling? ....when I setting up by cheapie but great to play Westfield P bass I wound the pups as far into the body as could be just for fun and to be honest it didn't make too much difference to the sound (volumewise).....one would think that you would need to ensure you have a pair of very sensitive pups in there, but I wouldn't presume that the stock Westfield P bass pups are anything to write home about?
7. or even here... http://www.tokaijapan.com/index.html
8. Offical Tokai UK site...not 'ere http://www.tokai-guitars.co.uk/index.php?page=shop.browse&category_id=6&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=31
9.
MB1. Made by Tokai but....."You've not seen me!....Right!"
....seen who, didn't see a thing....!
10. I'd love a US Fender if only for the romance of owning one, but I'll wait until I can outplay my MIM...which means it could be a long wait As a car dealer I find the market for bass's quite interesting and at times quite similar, more in line with the heart lead purchases of the fussy, finicky and often downright fickle classic market. A number of bass's seem to have gone thru a "couldn't give um away" price which is when my interest perks up to "can't buy one for sensible money" when I start looking to buy , but take care, both markets can be somewhat changable at times with years and colour combo's' & fads' also muddying the waters...but as they blurb says "investments can go up & can go down" as a case in point, I'd like one of those old Washburn 1000's, when I started looking (early 2010) a clean 'n tidy one, up on its toes, was around £175/£200 and didn't set the phone on fire, then they go for £250, then £300 then £450+ (one on Fleabay for £650, but unsold!) and now from where I'm looking they appear to be a bit 'sticky' again even at £400 odd? I saw this with Ford Cortina's years back. The older members here will remember the ye olde MK2 1600E, although always popular when new to few years old (a golden rule for an aspiring classic) they went from desireble to forgotten banger 'fodder', to top draw card carrying investment in a little over 4/5 years, then overnight it seemed everyone who wanted one had bought one and prices stagnated then suffered "degraded residuals" as a new car dealer may say) although never back down to earlier values... So what does this say about later US Fender's currently...I'm not quite sure, but they are always going to be a solid seller up there with the best although a US Fender is an aspirational purchase for most and we are in an economic slump. It's a tough market at the moment for pretty much everything for sale and I see prices for a lot of top end bass's getting a little soft, but quality always sells if it's priced correctly, so a good time to buy long term perhaps? If you can afford it buy the best.... PS: I know post 2009 Fender did a big revamp of MIM's build, not sure if this also applies to the US Fender's?
11. Is it a case of... ....I'd be real grateful for clarification/conformation As I see it at the moment: So we have Rick' getting the hump over clones, fakes, replica's, snides what ever you wish to call them, but from what I read Tokai Japan should also be grumbling into their Sake as they have nothing to do with 'Tokai' Rockinbetter's, even though blurb for new and secondhand sales usually declare 'Tokai' Rockinbetter...the one I viewed didn't have 'Tokai' anywhere on the bass or come to think of it any manufacturer's brand name....which sort of made it a 'no name' bass....unless this bass was a copy of a copy I think, the 'Tokai' part of the description is that the importer is called Tokai Ltd UK.....if so, this could be seen as a little misleading So whats the truth, anyone know for sure?
12. So if it was a 62, that makes it anything from 1.5k to 5k plus behind book, a 76 around 1k, well written description, just enough bait too.... These scams are always going to be around and have done forever, but they will always require and need two to tango, the original crook and yet another buyer wishing to find something for nothing. Human nature on both sides. I'd say the only way forward is small claims court, but do consider that even this isn't 100% to get ya money back, been there got the t shirt, cap and flag. Also, regrettable as it is, I'm not sure that naming, shaming and posting phone numbers on a public forum is strictly legit, however much the temptation! Take stock, count to ten, then move forward. Best of luck nailing this criminal, if you need more help try citizen advice and trading standards as the scammer maybe known to them?
13. Just to muddy the waters even more, I have a later mimp which is lovely, stingray, yamaha's, vm series jazz/fretless/telebass and my most played bass is my..... Westfield p bass, plays great, sweet neck and both excellent finger and slap tone too!
14. Crushingly beautiful colour combo', I know as I also own a trans orange/maple....took me 2 years to find mine! If you need to touch up the scratch, Nissan pearl orange 96/97 matches very well!
15. Lovely colour combo these placid n maple, 09 onwards mimp have quite a few engineering upgrades too...sister to my own example! , cant really have two, even though its also a nice price!
16. ...could be Harold Bishop on bass...?
17. That old boy can still play a bass! Interesting series of vids, seems there maybe/was a CD out? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBWY8oAnnww
18. Changed the lead? I've just had one with a super high resistance.......fender custom shop cable too!
19. I'm glad I only 'play with myself ' ! There's a phrase in my business " when it comes to motors and money, taint no such thing as mates".....need to add 'music' to that! Sad tale

21.
Please make them ban Mustang Sally I think any covers band that does that should be taken into the street and shot
Small world, this IS 'band'd' from my local....or a large donnation to charity
22. This is one of my fav' Japan tracks with a sublime bassline, I do have a pop at this on the odd occasion but never knew just how busy this line is and have been missing more than few notes . As is usual with most stuff 'Mick Karn', tabs, chords, sheet and/or hints/tips are rare and his take on tunes with mostly covering only 2 chords (so they say... I'll leave to that Davey Sylvian to argue that!) is amazing, but this guy seems to have nailed it for me....enjoy.
23. If you mail Messers E ball, they can tell the build date (birthday!) of the bass, options if any, and where it was sent to, as in what dealer worldwide...all free of charge.
24.
He is called Mark Plati. He is actually one of Bowies guitarists but for some reason - maybe someone else knows why- he plays bass on that song whilst usual bassist Gail Ann Dorsey ( who is also a brilliant player ,who favours a Stingray as well) plays guitar.
I don't blame her , this version seems to be in F...'tis easier for me in Ab (Mixolydian?) Not knowing too much (well bugger all in fact ) about key changes, that seems a fair old change step down (well 3 half steps in be pedantic)..I'm guessing this would this have something to Bowie's voice changing over 20 odd years?
25.
I seem to remember seeing this clip in some other context on Basschat, but I watched it again recently and was struck by what a great example of what is to me the archetypal Stingray sound . The full-bore attack of this bass allied to the superb skills of the guy who's playing it.makes every note punch through the mix on this performance.:
Great clip, for me you couldn't mistake that bass for anything else blindfolded.....one of my favorite tunes to noodle on.... this version sounds to be in lower key than the recording (Ab?) I need to look at his playing to be sure, could be my ears, they are crap after all? What's the sound of Stingray...for me simply Max' Funk.... and for me the only bass that can deliver high treb's with bass that I can still feel in my stomach. I reckon there are only 3 main types of bass, everything else is a variation of their flavors. Every one should own at some time in their life, a P bass, a Jazz bass...and a StingRay....4 string of course! I think a single humbucker Stingray is always going to sound more 'treblely', simply down to the location of the rear positioned pup, I often play mine with max bass, mid and treb cut to min, she still sounds slightly harsher than my P bass with tone cut, but in a good way and still with a creamy bass bottom. NB:- I thought it was just me who loved the raw sound of fretting, clangs and the mechanical noise of strings on frets This clip is (previously posted under Mark Adams), for me and my 70's/80's funk tastes, is a fantastic example of a Stingray sound as 'raw' as it gets, without too much bass EQ, it still gives me goosebumps.
