I imagine he means girlfriend (GF)
Ahh, I was trying to think of a bassist
Jumbo frets are raised a little higher making it easier to sound notes (supposedly)
sounds like the best explanation thus far, I've just looked again at the basses here and the Stingray has frets so large they look like 6" nails
It's an arcane term which originates from the era when ivory was widely used in musical instrument construction & finishing - for example piano keys, nuts & bridge saddles on stringed instruments - and of course frets. At the time animal gut was used to manufacture strings so wear was not an issue, hence frets made from ivory - Jumbo Frets.* *
This may be a lie.
Jon.
hmmm, so that means if I fit an Ivory top nut to my bass I'll have Jumbo Nuts?
Bernard Edwards did the bass solo on "Get It On". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14kXaX5D6Ng
Seeing that just made me think...it's the first, and only time, I have Bernard Edwards slapping?

see, it says so below so I know it has them and I'm not telling porkies. ....but Jumbo Frets sounds more like a Blue's Guitarist with a weight problem to me....they don't seem any different to my MIM P and BB414 frets? Strangely I sometimes hear customers describe their cars to me when looking to part exchange and 'Rusty Scabs' also sounds like a Blue's guitarist Model Name Vintage Modified Jazz Bass® Model Number 032-6702-(521) Series Vintage Modified Series Colors (521) Natural, (Polyurethane Finish) Body Soft Maple Neck Maple, C-Shape, (Polyurethane Finish) Fingerboard Maple, 9.5” Radius (241 mm) No. of Frets 20 Medium Jumbo Pickups 2 Duncan Designed™ JB101 Single-Coil Jazz Bass® Pickups with AlNiCo 5 Magnets Controls Volume 1. wow, interesting post Joe, thanks

The amps owner tells me the valve amp has a natrual compression effect which is good for slap?

I have been slapping all week, well trying, very trying on the neighbours I imagine! MIM Fender P with Ernie Balls Group III's flats sound great...very fat and easy slides, instead on hammer on when it's too fast! Yamaha BB414, simply excellent to slap, maybe the hot pups help...lush, real lush. VMJ sounds great too...the front pup guard help me a little, I was slapping The Smiths Bigmouth Strikes Again on it last night Stingray, sounds great too...as long as the bass 'n treble are flat out...but strangly the one I been playing least, not been off the hanger for a week again....no I don't understand it either? ...but what made the most difference....a Fender Bassman 100 valve amp with Peavey cab with woofer and tweeter that came with the Stingray on loan

My wife bought me the CD of 'Rio/Classic Album', very interesting, far more to this lot than a bunch of pretty student boys, some good stuff from the recording studio of 'straight' sounds before being 'mixed'....forgive my ignorance of proper terminology.
If you find yourself relying on tabs for certain songs that you cannot find sheet music for, then try doing what i do. Use 'Alpha Tab' I change the tab fret numbers for the notes themselves. So you are at least learning somthing whilst you play to it. Here is regular bass tab: G ---------------------------------------------------- D --------------------5--------------------------17-- A --------2----5-----------------14-----17---------- E ---3----------------------15----------------------- Translated into Alpha Tab: G -------------------------------------------------- D --------------------G-------------------------g-- A --------B----D-----------------b-----d---------- E ---G----------------------g---------------------- Alpha Tab works the same way as regular bass tab. All that is changed is the fret number becomes the note name. To distinguish between the same note name above the 12th fret, you simply use lower case.
I think, speaking (OK writing!) as a rookie myself, this is a great way to learn the fretboard whilst learning a well liked tune...which is what we all do when we first pick up a bass.

You all know how good these are so no need to explain: I think this will be a year old Jan 2011, she has front and rear pup covers fitted, Marvel Locks and is in, well, as good as a condition as you could possibly hope for a used bass, it's that's good, if there are ANY marks on it I can't find them. I have never had to tweak the action which is nice and low, and she never seems to go out of tune. A very lightly used bass since my BB414 arrived and then the Fender P....only used at home though, gigging ain't my thing! Everything works as it should, nice smooth pots, no dramas or issues, willing to post, still got inspection sticker on her. I'll pack in a hard case and you can post back. Pr pick up from Diss area, in Noooorfolk/Suffolk Selling it as she simply isn't being used, and when I do use her I find I prefer fat necked P and PJ's now...funny, it's the neck I used to love, well, I like erm fatter now!

There is a lot going on in most smiths songs Luv this playing
-
thanks for that Burrito, I thought broken nuts were quite rare
-
I really like the look of the amber maple VMP, very nice indeed....certainly looks the part....they are always dearer than the painted version though by £40 ish ....Good basses these Squiers, my VMJ is still as new, even though it's put a lot of hours in at the hand of a learner and plays very well if that helps?
-
real sweet playing, thanks as for being 100% as the original, not an issue for me....I'm glad if anyone recognises anything I play! ....although... hearing Le Freak played using a pick was interesting a few weeks back....I had my back to the band, getting a beer and thought, the bass must of had an iffy lead or something, causing some notes to drop out!
-
Bugger! I broke the top nut on my Yamaha BB414 by changing the strings...one half of the slot where the G string sits simply came off and flew off under the crimble tree! On closer examination there was a very little ding in the corner of the broken part, so I assume, I must of hit something with it on a sweet spot and stressed the nut, but being the 'plucky' little thing the BB is, she finally gave out only when I went to fit some of Ernie Balls finest. I glued the missing bit back on with the trusty Superglue and all seems fine, popping on that G string hasn't broken the nut yet, but have ordered a new nut for it........................... the dimensions are interestingly, the same as makes no difference, as a Fender Jazz ...although the actual BB neck is bigger. So since Cristmas Eve I've played my Fender which was nice, my VMJ which now seems too small on the neck, and the uber classic 1980's Ernie Ball 2 EQ StingRay that is on loan again... ...but nothing could replace the BB...everytime I saw her hanging on her wall hook I felt gutted, "why not the VMJ, or the Fender" getting her up and running again is like getting into my old jeans, soooooo comfy and simply wonderful... So that's how I found out which is the real keeper for when the recession bites even more and the kids need feeding....it maybe an expensive way to find out though, I never said the method was perfect PS any tips on nut replacement very welcome

great bass, you can't go wrong, I still have mine and many others have come and gone. ...I would always prefer to spend a little extra and get a peach rather than a raspberry
