Do you want to get back to trashing Talkbass? Carrots, tort, flats, yada yada yada
-
That's a pretty cool story it has attached to it. Really nice!
-
Haha, that case really is lux
-
That's awesome. I bet that neck feels amazing after nearly 60 years of playing. Was it originally black with the tort?
-
They should just have a sticky thread at the top of the home page warning zero-tolerance on humor posting. That place takes itself way too seriously

Let's see some pics of that 66 Jazz Bass!

The older things get, the more remarkable it becomes when they've managed to stay unspoiled. I'd agree that 20 years ago, a 78 P Bass wouldn't be held in much regard, but that was 20 years ago. Now it's nearly 50 years old and still has all it's original parts. Regardless of if it's a gem or not, it still seems a little sad to start pulling parts off of it now after it's stayed intact for so long. Changing the pickguard is especially egregious to me. There are plenty of brand new P Basses that can be done to. Ultimately, it's the OP's bass and he can do whatever he wants, but it'll just be one less instrument that stayed together and that's kinda sad to me.

I'd say leave it alone. late 70s P Basses have a vibe. Give yourself time to appreciate it before making major changes. Also, tort is getting played out. Black guard sunburst Fenders look classy (or 'smart' as you'd say on your side of the pond).

I had to split my preamp and power amp racks because the full rack was too heavy and too big to gig with in my own car. Here's how they link together. I run all the power out of the power conditioner at the top. I cut my own power cables for cable management and got the yellow and black locking cables to run juice to the power amps

I had the same theory - that maybe by designing a pickup with it's resonant peak either down deep into low-mid territory or up into the high mids, it creates the sonic effect of a "scooped" EQ to our brains. I wish I would have delved into the science of electric guitar earlier in my life as I'm finding a lot of what I took as fact is really myth.
-
I read somewhere recently that no pickups have a mid scoop - and to the contrary, all pickups by the nature of their design have a resonant peak somewhere along the frequency spectrum. I thought that was kind of interesting because I've always attributed Seymour Duncan's Quarter Pounders as having a somewhat "scooped" sound over typical pickups (my comparison being solo'd Jazz Bass pickups).

This thing is killer

This reminds me of something that happened to me. Behold this Washburn Bantam XB-100 POS Edition: Years before the application of all of the stickers and various modding nonsense (which culminated in just ripping all the wiring out and soldering the pickups right to output jack), I decided to put a nicer set of pickups in it. I swapped the stock Asian Sweatshop Specials for a nice set of Seymour Duncan SPB-2 Hot P Bass pickups. You know what they sounded a lot like?: the original cheap pickups that came in the damn thing. It was an early lesson that different ≠ better.

Show us your rig of choice for the weekend ** Basschat edition**
FugaziBomb replied to bassace97's topic in Amps and Cabs
The only rig I really have: -
Here's a recording where I used parallel chorus pedals. I re-amped the original bass track twice - once through Bass Clone set to a slow speed chorus, then another track through a DigiTech Whammy for the octave up affect and then into the same Bass Clone chorus set with a higher speed. Both the re-amped tracks are high passed, as I just left it to the DI track handle the lows. Guerrilla Panic - Ghosts

Smaller cabs tend to sound "boxier" than larger ones. When looking for a cab, try to find something more rectangular than square. Think like a Deluxe Reverb or AC15. I recently got a Monoprice 15 watt (would be branded as a Harley Benton in the UK) and it definitely suffers from it's small cabinet design.

Ironically, the new tariffs are costing us Americans more money as importers are passing the additional costs right to the consumers. I'm not just talking about at the retail level, either. I work in construction management and recently our steel suppliers have all put out emails regarding price increases due to the tariffs being levied against them for importing materials from Canada. To counter that cost, we have started to draft our own notices to our clients as well. As usual, regardless of who is sitting on our throne, the population is taxed with further increases to our cost of living. At a time where housing costs in my country are already astronomical, our government is enacting policy to further drive the cost of building materials up. It's a farce. I don't buy into partisan politics, either. It doesn't matter of what color arm bands the party wears, they always work against the bourgeoisie. Historically, that's worked so well for the ruling class in the past. As an amateur student of history, I am a little worried that within my life time I might see America erect our own national razor, which will be bad for everyone.

Hopefully a quick one - can anyone identify this bass please?
FugaziBomb replied to Minininjarob's topic in Bass Guitars
I'm Just using it as an example to concur that set neck vs a neck through construction isn't really impactful on the overall tone, seeing as the EB is set, the TBird is neck through, and they both sound pretty much identical to my ears. -

I can concur. I've got a Gibson EB: It's got pretty much the same pickups in the same places, but with a set neck and it basically nails the T Bird sound when you A/B them. These are great basses, by the way. I'm not sure if you can find them in the UK, though -
Ovation Magnum bridge & pickup surround question.
FugaziBomb replied to W1_Pro's topic in Bass Guitars
Powder coating might not be the most ideal finishing, but to be fair I'm not sure. I think most factory hardware is electro plated. From what I understand, electro plating is more resistant to corrosion and abrasion, while powder coating is a more heat resilient option in lieu of traditional sprayed painted finishes. -

Amos Heller did a video a few months ago about using a Darkglass Microtubes X and said he got the best results overlapping frequencies when biamping as well, so there's definitely something to it. -
I always wonder if these passive music man models are successful for the company in terms of sales. It just seems so weird to me to take a Stingray bass and strip it of the things that make it special - the preamp and the humbucker. I had the same thought when they were making the Cutlass and Caprice basses. Adding some kind of preamp in there that plays to the legacy of the company seemed to be the obvious choice to me. I'm just one guy, though, and I'm sure market analysis shows trends are different than my own opinions. Still, I would have really dug a Caprice with the classic 2 band preamp as a feature.

I dodged a real bullet it seems with the smoking. I started when I was 13 and quickly went to a pack a day after highschool. I finally quit in my mid 20s and never looked back. No health issues have popped up yet at 41 years old, so I'm hopeful I kicked it soon enough

It used to be I had people to carry it for me. It was a lot cooler back then.
