Piezo placement - under bridge or in neck pocket?
Chimike replied to Owen's topic in Repairs and Technical
Hiya, What is your string spacing ? I have a 5 string bridge, already fitted with piezo's. Does need wiring, though . Might be a solution . Mike -
Trace V4, this I got a see, will pop in. Mike

Hiya, Any chance of some insider photo's of your V6 ? I have a V6 with a dodgy power supply, but the only replacement transformer available now has flying leads, not the tethered leads used on mine, so I need to find out how the different type was wired up ! Fantastic amps, btw, my favourite ! ( and I have many !) Best Wishes Mike

Hiya, I worded that badly. Didn't mean to infer the original speakers are not good. I run EV's in one of my 402's, and have tried neo speakers in my 404's, this is the way I prefer to gig them, and I keep the originals boxed. I do this, as I often use higher powered amps (A.M.P 440 , Acoustic 370 ) that could blow the originals. Next I'm going to try 2 3015's ,or Faitalpro 15's in my 406. I suppose my point is, the original speakers are good, but they are getting long in the tooth ,now, and more modern drivers are easily replaceable. The cabs are very forgiving in design, this way, they last longer. Just the way I like to do it, everyone's mileage may vary !
-
Yes, that had me puzzled , too ! Maybe a 402 cab, cut in half. Is there a slotted port at the bottom of one of the cabs ?
-
Hiya, These don't look like they used to be a 406 cab to me, looks more like a pair of 404's Speaker probably not original, but probably the better for that. I would try the speakers with a meter, if reading about 5.5 to 6 ohms equals 8 ohm speaker, if reading 2.5 to 3 ohms equals 4 ohm speaker. Post results, and we can take it from there. Mike

Hiya, I have a couple of 406 cabs, happy to photograph them for you, or take measurements, but pics would help me understand better. Also, RichardDD was restoring a 406, and if you search on Basschat, his pics should show up. What speaker chassis were in the cabs ? Mike

Well, Bumnote was right about the prices. My NOS DP-200 combo should be arriving next week !

I've just arranged to pick up an old Bass amp, nearby , on that day, so will be popping in. Might bring an old Acoustic 220 rig, if I have room in the car. Mike

Trace Elliot GP11 circuit diagram anyone!!!
Chimike replied to tonewheelkev's topic in Repairs and Technical
Hiya, I also have a very early trace pre that is in need of attention. This one is the one with the two separate circuit boards, attached by ribbon cable, strangely, I also have a couple of the early RA500's, and one of them has a bad hum, so any chance of copies of the circuits ? Thanks Mike -

Nice 406 rebuild going on in the Repairs section -
Having collected my recent " Black Box " ebay purchase, complete with front panel exclaiming "Death and Doom " across the front, hurting my back, as I attempted to load it, single handed, into my car, I swore that I would cut this B........... Up as soon as I got home. After all, I'd only bought it for the 10" speakers ! But, I just had to see if I could get it working. It had obviously been stored for a long time, lots of oxidisation, dirty pots etc, but after a while, I had most of it working. Sounded b......... Marvellous. Unbolted the "Klyston " head, removed the hideous black felt covering, the road ready aluminium strips, the speakers ( nice old celestions ) etc, but instead of chopping up the cab, I decided to cut the top off, and make it into an 8 x 10 speaker cab. Why throw it away, I thought ! Turned my attention to the amp, now I had it out. More cleaning, spider killing etc. tried it with another cab, still sounding good ! Then I noticed the serial number was 0001 04 98, so had a look on the Ashdown website, found an old magazine article with a picture of the same combo, first built to Mark King's spec, called the King combo. Apparently, Mr King had the first one ! I'm not sure how Ashdown's numbering system works, but JIC, does anyone have access to large amounts of Superglue ? While MK has used many amps in his career, Ashdown may not forgive me for putting the axe to his amp , my plan, at the mo, is to rehouse the amp in a head box, using the parts I cut from the top, that are salvageable, and recover the speaker box. Won't be using rat fur, can't stand it. So it will be born again, just not quite the same. Gotta say something for the quality of Ashdown gear. This would have been toured, originally, then possibly played in a Doomer band, then left out in a garage for what looks like years. Didn't take much to get it sounding great, again. Thank you for sharing that with me, somehow, it helps ! Mike

Hi Rumour6, Some good combinations there, I'm going to try my 320 with a 406 when I get a chance, but will use EV's in the cab, or maybe Kappalites , far easier to transport than the 408. The 18". Cerwin Vegas are a problem, I have 1 original working, and 2 to go for re-coneing, will have to check the spec with the re-coner before I let him loose. Thanks for the tip. Hi Discreet. -
Up for sale is my unloaded Retro bass cab, probably built in the 70's , in the style of the Electrovoice Eliminator. Very efficient cabs, speaker is backfacing, similar to the big, early, Acoustic Control 301.This is smaller, and takes a 15 inch speaker. The resurrected ACC are ow marketing a similar sized cab , in addition to the reborn 301. A lot of companies built this design, including Orange, who sold it as a Bass cab. The BBC also used the Orange ones on the Radio One Roadshow's.Don't know the brand of this one, it's black, not Orange ! Selling, as I now have a genuine Orange one. cab is in West Sussex Email for pics, can't seem to upload them THanks Mike
