Took a punt on a Fazley P bass guitar from BAX. Wasn't sure what to expect as there was mixed reports about their service and quality of certain items. Had a look at their online site and came across some nice looking bass guitars by Fasley. I had been looking for a certain colour for a project and they had a yellow, with white scratchplate. The pictures seemed to show,a nice looking bass. But the price of £70 made my mind up. I ordered on Saturday abd received it Wednesday. Well packed,in two cardboard boxes. I was really only looking for the body and was not expecting it to be up to much at that price point. Wow! What a cracking bass! Well finished,no jaggy frets. The strings are pretty rubbish and dull sounding. I had an old set of rotosounds and stuck them on! What a differance! Ok its not an american Fender or anything like that, but sounds and feels like a decent Squier. The neck is pretty nice, the finish is almost not there at all, very little tint or anything, but that aside it feels fine! I was going to buy anothe neck, maybe change the pickups, but I think I will give it a bash at the practise on Wednesday,if it cuts it and the band don't laugh too much at the colour,I may give it a bash at the gigs over the weekend! No pictures at the moment,as I am in my bed and can't be arsed, but have a swatch at the BAX site! Anyone else had a punt at these guitars yet?

I had a chat with the singer the other day,he said the drummer bass drum was only coming through a monitor that the drummer had beside him. Maybe it was being picked up by other mikes,no idea.... Just seems the carpets and curtains may nave soaked up our sound, causing us to have to turn up louder to compensate. Plus he said he wasn't concered with the folk at the back of the room, they don't complain,it's the folk sitting or standing nearer to the band who do! .....I think I'll just try and turn down a bit!!

Great replies as always....

I came away feeling pretty bad about the whole thing,we had a brilliant gig the night before in a pub. Great sound, playing and the punters loved it. I came away on a high! Then the next night I question the whole idea of me going out playing when I really should be in the house resting! Anyway,I still love playing,so.....onwards!

As far as I know, the mikes were checked before I arrived, mine was set up when I arrived, but I never checked it,only plugged it in, The singer then switched everything on before we started. He had had a few beers by that point, but wasn't pissed. Maybe it affected his judgement,I don't know, but it seems we had a bad balance to start with.As for the bass drum mike, the monitor was very, very close to it...we had the same troubles in a small venue weeks ago,I was being as to turn down as the sound was booming. I turned off at one point then we noticed it was from the bass drum mike.Maybe the drummer should not mike up,which would force us to come down in volume to his level.

It wasn't so much of a row, more an exchange of words along the lines of..its too loud, turn it down...aye you said! well why dont you?..cause I dont think it is,but I'll turn down anyway, but I cant hear myself,etc...then a few swear words..lol. Handbags at dawn, petty stuff! As I said,I wasn't really up for it as,it was a freebie and I was tired....so,my bad as the youngsters say!

I played a private party last night in a golf club. Decent size room, the guests sat mainly at long tables, either side of the room, which had a large window at the end of it. The DJ for the evening set up to the right of the window,we set up,with the drummer in the middle, directly in the middle of the window, facing the room. When the DJ was doing his first set....well,playing some background sh*te before the buffet, which was pretty poor I might add!....our guitarist noticed the sound seemed pretty muffled from the djs speakers. I pointed out that the guy was using a laptop and his downloads may have been pretty bad anyway soundwise. We never got a chance to sound check and did a short 1 hour set as it was a birhday bash for the drummers wife! I was driving and had a fair distance to get there, the others got lifts in or taxis! So no drink for me! We started of well enough,so I thought, with a decent sound balance. It was a high ceiling, but no kick back from the back wall as there were plenty of bodies in the room, plus curtains on the side walls. Also curtain behind the band and a carpet below our gear, just in front of the dance floor. The monitor didnt seem to be working at all,so the singer started messing around with the mixing desk....cue vast feed back,as the drummer had a mike in his bass drum....anyway that got sorted. Then the guitarist found out his vocal mike was off..more messing around and still no mike! We shared mine for the rest of the set! Another song down and the singers wife comes up and speaks to him.....''Right guy's we all need to turn down!!'' So we did....this went on for the next 3 songs! At one point I stopped playing and no one noticed! I started to get a bit pissed off and let the singer know.....there was a short heated exchange lets say! The guitar played was the same.He could hardly hear himself. I carried on,but found I had to stand more or less over the top of my amp to hear it. It spoiled the night for me,plus I really don't want to fall out with the singer, but it seems as long as his mike is really loud, which I suppose on reflection is fair enough..the rest of the band should sound like a backing track. Ok,this is just a rant, but maybe we could have got a sound check earlier, which wouldnt really have helped as the room would have been empty, plus it was a free gig and I didnt fancy hanging around for hours before it. The usual pub gig sound check for us is the band playing a bit of blues, whilst the singer stands about 4 feet away from us and tells everyone its too loud!...I take it this is the norm elsewhere....oh and aye, bass players can moan a bit, specially after a really hard graft at work all week!

Cheers David.....As you mentioned,I have something else winging its way to me....Another Tokai! Black jazz/p bass with gold hardwear. Very much like the jazz version I used to own ..before being skint at mortgage time a couple of years past. Unlike the previous one, which I got for £90 off e bay, this was a bit more costly. The seller wanted £460. I put in a late night, drink fueled bid of £399. Which was accepted the next morning. The only thing was,it's the wife's e bay account and the message came through her e mail,on her phone as we were out shopping on Saturday. Let's put it this way.....I had a bit of explaing to do!! Anyway,my loss is Davy's gain! Punted the Peavey and also another bass I had kicking around, covered the cost ok....result! Oh,just checked the paypal info on the payment details.....seems the seller goes under the name of John Giblin!.......I wonder if?.......no.....it can't be!!!.....

Seems to be a top notch guy by all acounts,as I said, took a stab at one of his p bass guitars, got it for £175 off e bay last night. GAS at its worst !

Just pulled the trigger on a bass off e bay by Jamie Davie, who it seems makes stuff for Quo,Smokie,Robert Fripp and many more as they say! Had a look at his website and some of the stuff looks ace, mainly guitars though! Anyone here have a guitar or bass built by this guy. I believe the cheaper ones are made up of parts he buys in,but that doesnt really bother me if its a good one!!
Same for me. The cable sits nice and flat against the body and through the strap. Doesn't get caught up on sticky out bits of the drum kit.
Forgot about that!!...Its often the case that the stage is so small,or room so tight that we bass players often nearly end up in the drummers lap at times! And what about the racket off the cymbals about 6 inches from our ears!!

Drunkest night of the year - impact on gigging bands?
theplumber replied to The Admiral's topic in General Discussion
Played in Galashiels,in Scottish Borders tonight, plenty of drunks good and bad! The usual mad woman dancing about, knocking drinks over, knocking chairs over, falling on her arse and stamping on our lead guitar players pedals, causing the guitar to cut out. He said the last person that done that got a belt in the mouth, she got off lightly with a mouth full of abuse! Happy Christmas fellow bass folk!! -

I reported it today as well.....This is a joke! Someone has paid nearly a grand for a guitar worth about £60!
