1. I sent them an email about getting cases separately once and got no reply. Never followed it up though.
2.
Same thing really innit. I have a very tight picking stroke from my guitar shredding days and almost always start on a downstroke.
I've noticed that our guitarist always starts on downstrokes, probably for all that palm muting and stuff, and we end up playing the same riffs in songs with completely different picking patterns. I almost always focus on upstrokes. That said, I'd play this pattern as up down up. Catches the first up on the way back down from the last up of the pattern in one motion then. Don't know if that makes much sense!
3.
I'll punch you in the balls if you bring doughnuts to practice again.
Dislike.
4.
Only problem with the Conklins is the price =S They have no european dealer (even though i asked Bill Conklin himself and he said he would like one!) and thus the import tax combined with actual price comes out at like £1300 new, I'd LOVE a Conklin GTBD-7 fully active basses aren't my thing, and it would have to be red haha (I'm so picky =S) Weight isn't a 'huge' issue but clunky? How so? Generally unrefiened design? Thanks guys Wish i could afford to get a new GTBD-7 =(
I've had a GTBD-7 which I struggle to remember how much I paid for, but it was around 600 quid second hand I think? Something like that. Maybe not quite down to entry level price, but the regular GT-7 is every bit as good, and cheaper still. I've also had a second hand US Conklin 7 Sidewinder, which cost me around 800 pounds I seem to remember. For what you get, those prices aren't unreasonable to me. The GT-7 is still THE 7 string to learn on IMO, and there are plenty floating around in the UK second hand. They seem to hold value fairly well too if you buy second hand. As for the Galvestons, I find them to be unacceptably heavy (I'm normally quite forgiving with the weight of a bass - I'm pretty much happy up to about a stone). They're also large in the neck department. Some people might prefer the spacing of a generous 4 string on the neck of a 7, but it becomes much more difficult and tiring to play IME. They also have suffered from poor finishing when I've played them - the fretwork isn't astounding etc. I've heard fairly decent stuff about the Antonio Tsai basses you can pick up off eBay, but not had enough experience to offer a useful opinion to be honest.
5.
For those of you who currently play a 7 string whats the best way to get into playing a 7 string? I'm pretty interested!
Conklin GT-7 or GTBD-7. Almost everyone I know who plays/played 7s got into it through these basses. They're great quality, and you can pick them up for very decent prices second hand. Don't buy a Galveston off eBay just because it's cheap, only to be put off by the weight and clunkiness of it.
6. FWIW I'm pretty sure Max stopped offering the OC-2 mod. I'm not sure why, but I think it may be something to do with being potentially harmful to the circuit long term or something :/
7. I had never heard of one. Had to look it up. Looks like it's from slightly before my time...
8. My Matamp GT200 is actually 19" wide without the case. Now if that doesn't sound like it could be made rackmounted with a little fiddling, I don't know what does
9. I thought about that. But I just don't like the lift off cases, and I'd prefer it all in one box. I think a fan will keep air moving whichever direction it is pointing at any rate, which is the important thing I guess. I can't afford a case just now anyway, so I suppose it's all a bit moot.
10. Sorry to bump this, but it is relevant. I'm getting a live in flight case for my Matamp head and a couple of rack bits too, and I have a question regarding the fans. The Matamp has an air vent on the top, but this doesn't seem to stop a lot of people from racking their Orange/Mesa etc heads in the same way. I'm going to have a gap in the foam where the vent is to allow some air flow, but I'd like to strap a fan to the back regardless. So here's my question. I was going to set it up so that there is fresh air blowing onto the amp, but it seems from the responses here that people are advising using fans to draw air away from the amp instead. Which is a better idea? Cheers, Chris
11. That's stunning, I won't lie.
12. I play really hard (mostly with a pick) and I have a really low action. I have to have strings with a lot of tension in them, and I pretty much never bend notes. Rattles like owt, but I don't care
13.
I reckon with some pre-amp EQ you'd get some nice filthy top end for recording.
I'd probably want to run it flat out, and blend a DI/mic signal for some live stuff maybe? GT200 is too loud to run that flat out and still mic at a lot of gigs, but would the Minimat be too quiet?
14. I'm looking to get a live in one, so I need to make sure my measurements are right too. My head is a different size to every other GT200 though, so I can't verify yours. You'd probably do well to just check and recheck your own amp until you're happy with the measurements. And make sure to allow for the feet etc if they need you to Is it really a foot tall though? o_O
15.
Great looking board Simo. Fantastic. How do you find the MXR Noise Gate. I really need to try a noise gate out soon for my monster board...
Have you seen the video of the guitarists in Periphery showing off their rigs? Their use of two noise gates (3 in that video, seeing as the Engl heads have a noise gate built in) is awesome. I wonder if it would work quite as well on bass though. Also only really works for one style of music - it's a very "on or off" sound. I can vouch for the ISP Decimator doing a pretty good job though.
16. Has anyone tried a Minimat out on bass? I kind of really want one. Not sure what I'd use it for, but I'd still love one!
17. Guess I should post this here too, even though I still only have this one poop photo. It's my GT200 with it's new 6x10 friend. Having the white matching cab makes the head look 'complete' now I think, and I feel totally vindicated for my choice of bright white with the whole ensemble Oh yeah, the 6x10 owns pretty hard. I'll admit I've never been a fan of any 4x10 I've tried, so I was sceptical. It also definitely has taken me a few weeks to get used to how it sounds. It has so much low end, I'm struggling to roll enough off with the amp's tone controls to get it sounding how I like! Paired with my Precision, this amp just sounds how a rock bass really should IMHO Ace cabs - definitely worth a shout if you're in the market for a new one! Heavy, but ace.
18. M9?
19.
I have a lift off style case on my Bassman head. Looks very very cool but the flightcase does add serious weight to what for me was already a very heavy piece of gear. Ultimately I think the choice just comes down to taste. I wouldn't bother with my Orange head but as the Bassman was vintage gear I wanted the ultimate protection.
I used to have a VBA400 fully flightcased with the lift off lid, and it was heavy, but pristine A 2 man lift, really. So I'm prepared for the weight. Mostly just want to know if I risk really badly overheating the amp if I'm effectively blocking the top vent :/
20. Okay, I've pretty much ended up with a few awesome basses, a neato and versatile pedalboard, a nice cab and a nice head. I'm actually fairly happy with things as far as my rig goes at the moment! But I'm planning to hit the road hard with it, and the implications of that are that the stuff needs protecting. The basses have hardcases, the pedals have a flightcase, but I'm left with my amp completely naked! I have a soft cover for the head, but nothing more currently. I've just measured up my cab so I can get a nice soft cover from Roqsolid, but I really want to get the head properly flightcased. It's a Matamp GT200, so I think it deserves a nice case? Anyway, I'm kind of torn between the 'live-in' style case with the removable front and back, and the 'lift-off' style case where the top of the case lifts off and the head just sits in a tray. With it being an amp with a top vent, I know the lift off lid would be most sensible, but I really like the live in cases, and I've seen several pictures of people using them with AD200s, and a variety of other amps like the XXX, loads of which have top vents. So is this a really bad idea? Just looking for some people with some experience of having gone down the same path. I'd even be happy zip-tieing small fans to the back of the amp!
21.
You had a Tonehammer! You sold it!
Yeah, and I think I preferred it
22. I'm totally covered for pitch shifting too!
23. Sorted for a compressor I'm afraid!

Consensus on Tuning

I have it in the tuner out of my volume pedal, which is first in my pedalboard's chain after my wireless. I always leave it on, and just dip the volume pedal down when I want to tune. Handy.
