Maybe you could share the knowledge so we can all fix it?!
-
I do appreciate that there is no one better qualified than you to repair the GB amps, but sending his amp to the other side of the world to get fixed may not be particularly appealing given delays and exchange rate costs. I suspect he's just looking for an option to repair it quickly in the UK rather than disrespecting your knowledge, hence looking for an answer on here also.

This is an entirely useless comment as it is an entirely different cab, but I have the Big One which I think is the 15inch version of this cab and it is a beast which has served me well for donkeys. Whoever gets this is getting a lot of quality noise for the money! If it was a BB2 I'd be all over it!
-
Cheers, I thought I had read all 15 pages of this thread (genuinely!) and remember reading the bit about the one10s but clearly missed the reference to the BB2! Thanks for the steer. Edit: although having said that, that comparison sounds like the 112 rather than the 112H+. Presume the more powerful woofer just equates to more output rather than different sound though?

Has anyone made a direct comparison between the BF BB2 and the GR AT112H+? I'm in the market for a used BB2, but it's not that much more than current (imho inflated!) asking prices of a used BB2 than for a new GR AT112H+. The BB2 is twice the weight but twice the power handling and 25% larger volume, so interested to know how that translates in terms of extension and output.

Maybe slightly late to the party here, but have you checked the fan in you amp is still running? I had one that gave up which resulted in the amp getting very hot - new far cost about a tenner and took about as many minutes to fit. Zero problems since, if anything it pushes a little more air so runs cooler! Edit to add that I also had a non-bass amplifier in which the fan was getting really noisy - opened up the case and it was a rubbish design that had got filled up with dust - a quick clean and it was back to getting a sufficient airflow and more normal fan speeds. I'd get your amp out of the cabinet, check the fan runs fine and maybe open it up and make sure there is nothing obvious going wrong inside. Even just getting it out of the cabinet and into ambient air may be enough to stop it overheating again!

Thanks for swinging by @agedhorse, I'm a big fan of your work on the GB 12.0 which has provided me with years of sterling service so always enjoy your input to our forums!! The D-800 does look like a very nice amp, but from what I can tell availability on the new or used market in Europe is next to non-existent, so not something I can readily consider. I also feel like the form factor more closely resembles my 12.0 so would be more a replacement for that (if it ever dies and you can't fix it!) rather than an ultra compact option.

In all likelihood a Barefaced Big Baby, but possibly Super Midget/Mini. I have an Ashdown 410 at home at the moment but that needs to go in favour of something I can lift into the car on my own without damaging either the speaker, Car, or my back! I have very recently purchased a Markbass Nano Mark 2 locally though that was completely spur of the moment and without understanding what developments there have been in amp design over the last 12 years or so since I bought the Shuttlemax. That may well be all I ever need for the smaller setup, but know I found 150w @8ohms a little lacking in the past so keen to (retrospectively!) understand what modern class D amps are capable of in a very small package. A LOT is the answer!

The TecAmp Puma 900/Eich T900 seems to be the winner form-factor wise vs the various "block" incarnations. Presume the ICEpower 250ASX2 modules that Eich use are just a smaller profile. I did read that the tested output of the 900 is closer to 700w but that's more than enough for me! Will keep an eye out for a 900 on marketplace.
-
The 800B looks really interesting - same ICEpower power stage as most of the expensive 'branded' options at a fraction of the price. Might keep an eye out for one on marketplace.

So our band practices beside a transmission antenna - we get full on air traffic control transmissions to pilots that are as clear as day coming through our gear!

Amp Modder - ideally in Hampshire (UK) ?

Great detail, thanks. Sounds like it is maybe worth avoiding the 500s without a fan. 900w model would be fine as would barely tickle that output! -
Some great suggestions already - hadn't noted the Begantino Forte or Quilter BB800 previously so will check them out. @d-basser I have considered a power amp but not seen one that offers a clear advantage in size, power and price vs a class D bass head. I'm also not completely sure I'm ready to ditch the convenience of some EQ controls pointing straight at me all gig!

Pretty much as per the title, I'm interested to know what the smallest (size and weight) head that puts out 500w or more into 4 ohms is? I'm lucky enough to have a Genz Benz Shuttlemax 12.0 which is both light and ridiculously powerful (2x 600w into 4 ohms) running into a Barefaced Big One which is my main gigging rig. That is already pretty light and small, certainly so for the masses of noise they generate but as they normally reside in a practice room two counties over, I'm also looking for an even smaller setup for home and pub gigs. I recently picked up a Markbass Nano Mark 2 which is insanely small for a 300w amp; that got me thinking though, what is the smallest head that puts out at least 500w? Something like the Tecamp Puma 500/Eich T500? I have a Helix Stomp so pretty confident I can use that to dial in pretty much any sound I want (particularly given how flat the BF cabs normally are), so I don't need a complicated pre or anything, just interested in what the art of the possible is these days in size vs power?!

So where did you end up with this one? When you say Gen 1 is it the double height version?? Interested to know if there are any issues with the 1U? -

Note that they will let you swap the filters in them within the first 60 days, so if you get the 17s and feel like you need more or less attenuation they will let you swap.

Inexpensive strings - get em while you can.
ukbassboy replied to TheGreek's topic in General Discussion
Damn it, no one ever seems to do deals on the Rotosound 55s for 5 string - just as well they are stainless and last donkey's! -
Have you considered something like ACS Pro 17s? They aren't cheap, but attenuate relatively flat across the frequency range (especially compared to foamies!) so will still give you a sense of your tone. They are also reusable - I don't use mine that much these days as I have Custom IEMs, but mine (old ER15s but basically the same thing, just earlier model) are 15 years old and still going strong!
-
Nice to see someone else still rocking a Big One! I bought one used on here years back and it's still going strong (but then I can count how many times a year I gig on one hand!). I had an Ashdown ABM 410 and a Mag 15 before that and the Big One has more oomph then both of them put together! We have an old but pretty decent PA set up (couple of 18inch subs and mackie towers on top) and the Big One can get loud enough to be heard over top of them and need dialling back! I therefore highly recommend Barefaced cabs. I haven't tried their new 12inch stuff but people seem super impressed with them. In fact, I've just decided to get rid of the ABM410 (which I still use at low volume at home) to get something smaller like the Super Midget or BB2. The ABM410 looks and sounds lovely, but at 36kgs it's not going anywhere soon time for something smaller and lighter that gives me another option over the Big One.

I've got the 5 string version and it is by far and away my favourite bass. Beautiful feel to them, great sound, stunning finish. I like mine so much I only pull it out for gigs where I know there is zero risk of hurting it, the rest of the time I'm on an old Yamaha! Such a shame they don't make them any more.
