1. Well, took the cab down to the little gathering in Reading on Saturday, and the cab dun well It looks like the tweeter's not doing quite what it should - switching it in and out made very little difference to the sound - can't imagine it's meant to be that subtle. And, the handle location's not right. Mike placed it for visual "rightness" a bit too early in the build sequence, but that means the cab hangs slightly off vertical when lifted - not a big deal, but could be better. We've decided that we'll go down the "handle on the side" route instead, so that the handle doesn't get in the way any head placed on the top of the cab - not all have big enough feet to sit above it. The handle's held in with M5 bolts through into tee nuts, but the lower density of the lightweight ply means that one of them was spinning very slightly, so we're going to glue a small patch of 12mm birch for the teenuts to locate into when the handle gets moved. So, round 1 over - time for a few tweaks and then we should have it nailed! Here it is with my G&L in front of it with the TC RH450 on top (angled by my proprietary folding amp ramp Group shot of various gear
2. Here's a rearful of the fEARful: The switch is a bit of a jury rig, as the one we were intending to use wasn't available, and we wanted to be sure it was ready for the weekend. At some point I will try and get the variable L-Pad fitted, too.
3. ...and into the home straight Piping round the grill to give it a bit of a retro vibe
4. Some more progress: More horn, please missus
5.
Can someone please build me one of these cabinets?!?! There seems to be a lack of builders of these cabs in the UK.
You have a PM.
6. The box, all tolexed up We (I) got a bit caught out when having to cater for my miscalculation when resizing for 15mm ply - the front lip ended up having to be a bit shallower than it should be to retain the correct cab volume. That didn't seem to be a problem at the time - plenty of space for the drivers to front load - but we didn't have the tweeter's waveguide to hand. The waveguide projects by 1" - so the routing around the tweeter cutout is there to rebate the waveguide a bit so it fits behind the grill. Still to do - trim back the wadding at the back of the port, fit the crossovers and wire the beast up!
7. Crossovers done: mid/bass: High pass for the tweeter Family shot Components held down with zip ties and hot melt glue. Only downer on this is that we were going to add a variable LPad for the tweeter, but the supplier's out of stock. So we're just going to put an on/off switch in for the moment, as we want to have the cab done for Saturday.
8.
LawrenceH and RichardH, are you boys identical twins?
I've got the horn It's a big boy!
9. The crossover components are not the precise ones specced by Greenboy (as you can only get them from the US), but are equivalents. Air cored where specified, non ferrite solid cored (not quite sure what the core is!) when a solid core is specced. The wire gauge is also as specified, so all should be well The 15mm ply is poplar, yes - though I understand it has magic inner cores that are extra light. If I said my mate with the CNC machine also makes bass cabs that have a name that used to rhyme with Toot and now (sort of) rhyme with Turtle Silly maybe that will give you an idea of the source of the ply, and it's lightness.
10. Cheers - just had the tweeter waveguide arrive from the US, too - so we're getting there!
11. Well, crossover parts are on their way - bought the components from Europe Audio, and the drivers should be soon - I'm adding a variable L-pad for the tweeter and that was out of stock, so will need to wait until that comes in. While I've been sat on my backside with a stinking cold, my chum has rolled the cab edges and started covering it (black tolex). He's great at doing stuff - not so good at progress pics though!!!
12. Been reading up on these beasties for a while, and fancied building one. Bearing in mind my house is in "a bit of a state", and I'm in no position to do any DIY (i.e. we had a massive fire a while ago and half the house is uninhabitable, inc my workshop), a certain Essex based contact of mine who happens to have a CNC machine and a workshop bulging with lovely tools offered to give me a hand. The Greenboy designs are not for commercial use, so I should stress that this is being done for me as a favour, and no money is changing hands. Anyway, here we go: Programming up Cutting the cab We're using some of the ultralight ply - only pain is that it's 15mm and the design is based on 12mm, so it took a while working through the dims to retain the interior volume. The CNC machine also works in metric rather than imperial, so plenty of calculatorisation needed The nice thing with the ply is that it is significantly lighter than 12mm birch ply We cut the plain panels on the bench saw, and then in a blur of activity we found that we'd actually got the braces glued to the panels. We have thicknessed the port brace down to 12mm so we don't lose width in the port. I then had to go home, kicking myself I'd not taken more photos through the day. Got a call this morning to say he's now put the cab together. How's that for a build thread! Time to get crossover parts and drivers, I think!!!
13. Is this the later smooth finished version?
14.
You lucky man! must be great fun playing in a lively and energetic band like that. I've been trying to put a 'Feelgood' type band together for years, but just can't find enough interested musicians, although in my present band, our main guitarist loves Dr Feelgood and has all the 'Wilko' riffs off to a tee, our singer has nailed the vocals, and the other guitarist plays some mean harp! We do three 'Feegood' songs, and the punters love them, even if they are not familiar with them, trouble is, our drummer prefers a lot of the old classics. We only play pubs and some open-air events in the summer, and I feel that the punters are getting a bit bored with all the usual covers that most bands play up and down the country, seven nights a week. Just my opinion, of course!
What a bugger you're a bass player too, as I've been saying the same thing to our guitarist/harp player. AND I'm in Herts. Mind you. sounds like you're getting there by slipping some in to your sets.
15. I have some white piping that I'll never use - the plastic "P" section stuff. If you want it I would be happy to post. Work out how much you need and I will dig it out and check I have enough for you.
16. If you do eBay it, feel free to use my photos.
17. Mike brought this bass over to my place when he had it in for the work that's been mentioned, for me to do some photos of it (and a few others) for his new website (coming soon-ish). Here we go:
18. The BFM designs are highly efficient, and while they can't magic infinite volume from a tiny box/speaker, they do make the very most of any speaker. For the price that this cab is being offered for, it's a no brainer!
19. I might be interested in it split into a pair of 1x10s for use as a small PA.
20. I might be interested. Old or new finish? If you want to sell it, I think you have to name a price, too.
21. I'm interested! Will pop you a PM.
22. If you use somewhere like Interparcel you can book the courier to collect from your work address (so long as work will allow that, I guess!)
23. Is this the "new" coating?
