As someone of 50% Germanic parentage (Austrian to be precise) I don't care for the term 'krautrock' as in the UK the word 'kraut' is always used in a derogatory context. Also it's a lazy way of lumping a disparate bunch of musicians who only have their nationality in common.

Being 50% Austrian as well I totally agree.

It's also not only German musicians who appear to be called 'krauts' by those who still hark back to the war (even when they are too young to have even been born then). Anyone with a 'middle European' accent appears to be grouped by this derogatory term (so the Austrians, Swiss and anyone else 'forin'). I do wish certain people in this country could be a bit more 'inclusive' and understanding of others from other backgrounds.

Yeah, that’s the word: gritty. But they seem to be doing the job.

First practice tonight and it didn’t disappoint. Sat in the mix perfectly.
One thing I noticed though, and it was the same on my Warmoth Jazz 5 I had back in 2012. The E string is not as « punchy » as the one on my 4 string basses. It is not dull or anything, it sounds good within the mix, it’s clear and precise, but I feel like that on my 4 stringers, it’s got more punch. Hard to describe, but I’ve read it’s quite common in 5 strings, due to construction and wood density.

    Thoughts?

I've got two 5 string Jakes. One is extremely punchy, the other one is good but misses the punch. I've changed string types etc etc and it doesn't change. I think it's luck of the draw or something.

You just have to keep looking until you find one. Or, if you want to be a little more certain, spec a Maruszczyk Jake with a chambered body.

Mine weighs 7.2lbs, and balances perfectly.

I have two 5 string Maruszczyk Jakes (a PJ and P/MM). One weighs 7.2lbs, the other 7.3lbs. So to get a 4 string version should be even lighter.

Here's my two Jakes. A P/J V and a P/MM V. Both chambered and weighing in at around 7lbs each. The only fault I can find is that I'm not a massive fan of the look of the Delano pickups big poles on the red P/MM, but otherwise they are probably amongst the best basses (especially the sunburst one. That one just edges in front of the red one) that I have ever played (the light weight does help a lot too).

I had to buy the red one back. I stupidly part-exed it at the Gallery because I wasn't keen on the big poles on the Delano pickups and the Hipshop B style bridge (I prefer the A-style) but nothing I got since felt so comfortable. They all sounded great but these two basses feel like your comfy old slippers. The red one only weighs 3.29kg. The sunburst one 3.39kg. They are soooooo light in weight and, to me anyway, unlike the Precisions they are based on, just feel 'right'. Luckily it was still in the Gallery, so two basses plus a lot of money went back to them in exchange, but it's totally worth it.

  5. Godin A5 - This is the 1st generation A5 without the synth access.

This has a Lace Ultra Slim Acoustic pickup and volume control with a double jack plug so that you can have piezo or passive acoustic magnetic sounds.

Almost new Warwick hard-soft case included.

There are a couple of very small, what looks like finger nail, marks on the front but otherwise it's pretty much unmarked.

Bugger I thought you would love this bass anyone thinking of buying it do so it's so much more than a metal bass glwts

I love the looks and adore the sounds, but it's been ages since I've had anything more than 3.5kg around my neck (my Maru is 3.2kg, which is perfect), and it just doesn't like it - disc issues :(

  7. As much as I love it it's a bit too heavy for my neck - somewhere over 4kg according to my old stand on weighing machine (I need 3-3.5Kg basses). There are no dent's, scratches or knocks. It's a 2018 model and it's got a brand new fitted gigbag - bought last week.

The upgrades are EMG DCX (instead of HZ) pickups and an 18v BTC preamp instead of the stock one (about £275 new)

Ah that's a shame. It's gone from hero to zero in the space of a week, in classic BC fashion!! I thought the Maruszczyk or one of your other herd might be for the chop ahead of this one:

Not getting rid of the Maru. Probably the best bass I've ever had (and I've had quite a few - everything from cheapos to custom shop and custom luthier made stuff and everything in between).

We all know how GAS attacks and I'll probably regret it if I do get rid of it (and I know I won't manage to get another (affordable) one with all the upgrades it's had, so I'll probably keep it for the moment.

As an aside, I've not ordered the scratchplate I was considering. I listened to the good people on here and decided they were right (plus, I wouldn't be able to sell it as easily if it had the screw holes in it.

Dave Ellefson rules - I do keep looking at his range of Jackson bases

I actually had to look up who he was (not a massive metal fan at all), but at the cheaper end of the metal bass choices his did seem to be the best (IMO). I must say that if I wasn't joining this band I don't think I'd have gone so pointy - 56 year old, balding bloke down the dog and duck playing metal - but it is a very good bass (especially with the upgraded pickups and preamp that the previous owner fitted).

After having joined a heavy rock/mild metal band, I felt that my Sunburst Maruszczyk Jake PJV, Godin A5 or 5 string double bass didn't really fit the bill, image wise, so the hunt was on for a Thunderbird type bass. I narrowed it down to either an Epiphone Pro V Thunderbird or a Jackson David Ellefson Kelly Bird V, and with the help of the good people of BC, and the fact that I found a mint one with upgraded pickups and preamp on Reverb, I went for the Jackson. It arrived this afternoon, so, after managing to smuggle it into my home office without anyone seeing (yes dear, I've had it for years), I plugged it in, switched on my Darkglass Microtubes overdrive pedal and launched into the intro to Ace of Spades. Now, I'm not a fan of battery power ie. active basses, but the upgraded EMG DCX (instead of HZ) pickups and 18v BTC preamp made all the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. Oh wow. I was going to strip out the active setup and go passive, but I'm not going to now, this is so good.

The strap buttons have already been moved (one to the body by the base of the neck, the other high up on the back of the body) so balance is perfect, with no neck dive at all and I also managed to buy a gigbag that fits the shape perfectly.

Not sure - I haven't heard of that fix! But I think the upper horn strap button is further forward than the neck screws, so I think it might make it worse rather than better...

It's not where it is in relation to the frets, it's because it's holding the body lower down. Works on pretty much all thunderbird styles, SG's and hollow bodies
