When I left my old covers band (and yes, we played every old cheesy chestnut that's been mentioned so far) to join an originals band (good enough to record a couple of albums and play a festival in California), our old drummers wife said that she wouldn't bother coming to see us as she wouldn't be able to sing along. Needless to say we don't gig anymore and the guy whose band it is is using session guys to record the next album and it's back to cheesy covers for me if I want to gig.

Boss ME50b was my main effects pedal for years. It's still my backup

I part ex'ed this for the BG500 version earlier this year but now I'm about to join a heavy rock band I need more than this baby can pump out so she has to go to fund something a lot louder (and unfortunately heavier It's got a few marks but nothing to write home about. Is in very good condition and sounds wonderful. I'm in East Sussex but we can meet up if not too far away for a little diesel money or post at cost (though I'd prefer meeting up)

OOoOps.This ad has been added twice Look at the other one for photos I swapped this for the BG500 version a few months ago as I was giving up gigging very loud stuff but still wanted something that made a 'loud noise' and was ultra portable. I've now been asked to join a heavy rock band and I need even more than this beauty can pump out, so even though its been sitting in my spare bedroom doing nothing it has to go so I can get something loud and heavy (in weight unfortunately). £200.00 I'm in East Sussex but might be able to meet up if not too far away

Simon Farmer at GUS Guitars often has to finish parts of his guitars in chrome or gold. Give him a shout and see if he's got any gold stuff in the pipeline that he can add your bridge to.
How do you know the Godin is better quality? In what way? May I put it to you that you don't, it's just a sales ploy on your behalf. If you think I'm being a bit snotty, well, apologies, but I get sick and tired of people making statements they can not back up. If you delete your bit of drivel, I will delete my bit of drivel. I've only played 2 Japanese HMT's, one I owned for several years. IMO, the quality was excellent. I'm fine Tom, thanks, fingers crossed for you sir!
I've owned two as well, so please don't start getting snotty with me. The Fenders felt flimsier. They didn't stay in tune as well due to the necks constantly moving, the piezo pickup needed the cafe Walter alteration before they sounded any good and the bridge needed breaking half way along so that you got an even note volume (none of which needs to be done to the Godin). This has been brought up before. If you have an issue you can say things in a much nicer way otherwise all that is going to happen is that people get fed up with the slagging off and then everyone either doesn't post anything at all (which is happening) or just leave, thereby making what is supposed to be something enjoyable a drag. PS. If you read Tom's post he also said that a Godin electric he'd played was the best he'd ever tried. This post is not the place for your snottiness.

How about a Godin Acoustibass - precision shaped. Piezo and Fender fidelitron pickups. Just over 6 lbs in weight. Like a Fender AE / HMT but better quality, made in Canada. Follow the link to see it for sale. No, but I turned down a band a few weeks ago because they played too many Thin Lizzy songs (I hate Thin Lizzy).

Just got this back from Simon at GUS Guitars. I think he's done a wonderful job. I've now got a bass that weighs only 6 pounds. Has piezo and magnetic pickups and looks (IMO) wonderful. Here's what Simon had to do with the electrics to make everything work: 'The mods to the electronics included installing a volume control for the magnetic pickup which incorporates a push/pull switch. In the down position the output to the 9 pin stereo jack is mono with a blend of magnetic and piezo pickups; pulled up it splits the signals which can be sent to separate amps via a Y cable. To allow the magnetic pickup signal to be blended with the Piezo pickup signal it was necessary to convert it to low impedance using a little EMG preamp, which was wired up to match the piezo output for volume. Both circuits share a common battery, which was installed in a flip-top box on the rear of the bass. With the new electronics and controls housed in the original cavity the installation has been kept quite discreet and the look of the bass as tidy and original as possible'. And here's some pictures: 1. Modded circuit board (taken before magnetic preamp install) 2. Thumb rail with additional pins for stability. 3,4,5 Completed bass
I have the very same bass... wouldn't be brave enough to do that! What was the deciding factor for pup placement and did you know what was under the top in that location before you started routing (what is it that gives it that 'resonator' sound)?
Pickup placement - I left it up to Simon at GUS to find the 'sweetspot'. As it's basically a Precision I don't think it was too hard for him to work that bit out. If you take off the control plate you can see there is a centre block so he's just cutting into that (but thats another reason I went for the Fender Fideli'tron pickup. I didn't want anything too wide like a P or J pickup that would go into the acoustic hollow of the bass and from what I could see of the Gretsch and TV Jones pickups they had a bit of a dogear for screw placement which also made them wider. The Fender version was the narrowest pickup I could find.

Having just got my hands on a Godin Acoustibass I decided that what it needed was Fender Cabronita'ising to add to the LR Baggs piezo pickup system (basically to change it into a sort of Fender Japan A/E precision, of which I've had two. They were great but the Godin is a much better quality instrument IMO. First things first was to get a Fender Fideli'tron bridge pickup from the USA. Once the pickup arrived it was off to Simon Farmer at GUS Guitars for him to start the work. The photos are following this: 1 Machining custom perspex template for pickup 2 Routing pickup hole 3 Pickup hole 4 Test fitting pickup 5&6 Rout for Pickup volume pot 7 Drilling control plate for pot 8 Test fitting pot and knob 9 Machining Ebony thumb rail to fit around pickup Simon is sending off to Canada to get a special Graphtech jack which will allow me to have either piezo, magnetic, together into one amp or separate into different amps (with a stereo 'Y' lead). Because the volume pot is going where the piezo battery went, he'll be routing out a hole in the back of the bass for a flip opening battery compartment. I'm not bothering with a tone pot as I can dial in different tones for the piezo system instead.

This is actually a very early prototype that was recently completely overhauled with many new parts and a complete respray. It's effectively a new instrument but with a bit of 'heritage' to it...it was the first G1 built using Carbon fibre over Cedar process. It was re-build to serve as a demonstrator for a short period. It would certainly be a cost effective way of getting hold of a Gus instrument. I'd be looking for £1750.00 for the guitar...a new build would start at £4000 to give you a comparison. This guitar has a new fingerboard, tube frame, pickups and electrics. The only original hardware parts are the bridge and machineheads. It's wired with an 8 way switching system, that gives 4 single coil and 4 humbucker sounds, including the 2 pairs running in series together, which produces a beautifully fat, powerful sound. Would a bad Keyboard Player make you quit a band ?
6feet7 replied to KennysFord's topic in General Discussion
In my last band we sacked our keyboard player. He just played exactly the same chords as the guitarist but at a higher volume (so everything turned to mush). The last straw was at a rehearsal when he spent the whole 3 hours playing with his laptop (on the floor under the keyboard) with one hand and the other hand on the keyboard. He managed to produce a lot of noises, many of them similar to white noise, but nothing that resembled what he was supposed to be playing. He got his marching orders the next day. -
