1. That Commodore's a short-scale? Doesn't look as such from the photos - maybe just my eyes are weird Anyway, I like the dials and the switch and those chunky looking pickups
2.
First album was '99, not what I'd call new. Although I agree, he's massively underrated. Crown Of Storms is the most tasteful use of bass tapping ever committed to record.
Quite a few 'new' bands have been around for a while. And his style is constantly changing - good enough for me
3.
Yeah i have already thought about this, the exchange rate and the charges i will get to actually get it in the country are very off putting
You can still get SX basses in the England, with the Fender-style headstock - try here...
4. Brian Gibson, from Lightning Bolt. Can't think of another two off the top of my head.
5. Call me weird (just not all at once) but I actually quite like that Commodore. In terms of design anyway...
6.
Affinitys are a bit lower budget, go for a CVJ or a JMV, they are much higher build and component standard and they will hold their value much better. Another thought is to go for the VM Jag, it's basically a Jazz with a P neck pickup anyway and will look much different to the standard Jazz style. Something to think about. I'd love one, in white of course http://www.squierguitars.com/products/sear...rtno=0327900506
Aren't all of those outside Simmo's budget?
7. +1 for Squiers. An Affinity or a Standard Jazz from them is well worth the money!
8. You can get a Squier Affinity series bass for under £150 new.
9.
Not in the slightest and I know it has been discussed on here, but I think in general most actions are on the lower side of medium.
But that doesn't tend to suit playing with a plectrum, let alone hammering away like Lemmy does
10. Is a high action so much of a sin then?
11. If it's of any use, I had a similar thread recently on the same subject - here - it may answer some questions.
12. Yes - I've only just noticed that too. Damn! Oh well
13. There's probably more than 3, but for starters: David J Glenn Campling Dave Sardy
14. Aha - very interesting...!
15. I like D'Addario Chromes as they sound quite zingy and with a bit of a metallic ring, but that doesn't really suit my Jazz fretless. They're also a bit noisy. The best ones I've found are Pyramid Golds, but they're not cheap. They're also very very smooth compared to D'Addarios and Rotosounds. At the end of the day you really just have to try as much as you can afford and see what suits you in terms of what tone you're after.
16. I used to think 'Mirror In The Bathroom' by The English Beat was tricky until I had a go at learning it, at which point it turned out to be surprisingly easy.
17. It's worth a try. Luckily a roll of the stuff is cheap! It can wear out pretty quickly, especially if your hands get wet, but it really depends on what you're doing. The trick is to wrap one layer for your skin and a second layer for the first layer - just not too tightly
18. How many different brands of flats have you tried? Sounds can vary from one to another brand.
19. It depends whereabouts you get the split skin. I used to get this alot when working outside, especially with the skin around my thumbnails. One trick it to wrap up areas you know will be a problem with some good wrapping plaster, as a pre-emptive measure, and carry a batch with you. Or duct or insulating tape if you're going the hardcore route!
20.
A couple of beauties (to my eyes anyway!)
Very tasty. I used to own a fretted one, for a short time, back in 1988/89. The red one almost looks brand new.
21.
I LOVE NoMeansNo!!
They're touring at the moment - I'm seeing them in London on the 25th of this month.
22. I always use Couch straps - they're very well made and come in some interesting styles. I have a b&w 'Racer X' strap with my T-40, and it takes the weight of that with no problems. That strap is also quite chunky, so pads out the weight nicely.
23.
So am I the only one then? Am I the only one whose "feel" is greatly affected by the instrument?
Maybe. You have to deprogram yourself, I'd say. You can get most sounds out of most basses if you get the hang of any given style. For example, play punk rock-style stuff with a plectrum on a jazz fretless
