1.
To me, snobbery can be taken at face value, but it is the implied social hierarchy that really interests me. What does it take for you to firstly construct a form of hierarchy at a gig, then to insert yourself somewhere within that hierarchy? Also, do you find you want to be higher up even if you assume you're not? [...]
This seems a really odd outlook to me, which is probably why the whole snobbery thing always seems completely daft. First of all, why should one care about a hierarchy and where one fits into that? Does it mean that one is desperate to be part of some imagined pecking order? If so, count me out And the end of the day I still think it boils down to how things sound, and what you're after in terms of sound. Being bothered by what one may perceive as a pecking order, musos, etc. seems to be counter-productive to what you're doing - i.e. playing bass, enjoying it and entertaining people.
2.
i would not ever consider trying to be best at one thing. i would lose.
And someone would always say 'Well, he's not as good as...' despite what one thinks of oneself
3. At the end of the day I tend to think that gear doesn't really matter - what sound you want and get from whatever you have matters most. Let's face it, very few people in an audience will give a monkey's about what kit you're using unless it sounds crappy (unless crappy is what you're aiming for). People will enthuse of what kit they prefer, but that's just the nature of having an interest in the stuff we like as individuals and what we like the sound of.
4. I do find it amusing that some of us poor people have to make do with knackered old basses, whereas some rich people are prepared to spend alot of money getting the same effect faked
5.
MB1. From your pic it doesnt look as if hes replaced it Straight ,might need repositioning an easy fix!.
The strip shouldn't be straight.
6. I see. I asked as I don't like the idea of any lines on a fretless, even along the top of the neck. I just go by the dots, if need be
7. Aha - great, thanks for the info. So the fret lines shown on yours (along the top of the neck) were standard, Happy Jack? And did you have to trim down the nut?
8. Oh, I prefer the look of it myself!
9. One reason I don't play a lined freteless I guess you could just put them at relevant fret points instead - i.e. put dots where the frets are either side of the side dots.
10. Yep, it's fine. Have a look closely at a variety of MIJ Fenders here...
11. It's the grounding strip. My MIJ Jazz also has one. Quite common to see them on MIJ Fenders of a certain age.
12. You can just put small white or day-glo circular stickers on the side dots. No-one can really see them apart from you. Art shops sell such things - WH Smiths too.
13. Aha - so there's no mad amounts of duty to pay on them? Did you get yours direct from MM or somewhere else?
14. I'm still having problems finding a Mighty Mite neck in the UK. Two UK sources sell fretless necks but they £180-235 for them! Any advice?
15. This is all very interesting, and thanks for the replies! Happy Jack - I'm only in London on and off for the next few weeks. Photos would be nice to see, just out of curiosity. DanOwens - I've just realised that the neck you mentioned is a Stingray type. I lean more toward the Pbass look in terms of the headstock - for this project at least! So does anyone know of/recommend a UK seller for MM necks of the type I'm looking for? All I can find is US sellers. Do the MM necks have the holes already drilled for the string tree and the tuners? If so, do Squier bits fit? I'm hoping to transfer as much as possible from the Affinity. And also my DIY skills and kit are non-existent.
16. Having only really owned somewhat knackered basses, lookswise, buying new 'reliced' stuff seems a bit strange to me. I do like the look, if it's real - for example:
17.
Old Horse Murphy has been advertising an american fretless p bass neck. And he's a splendid chap to deal with!
Aha! I shall have a look. Does Fender stuff fit Squier stuff? I ask as some bits sometimes don't, i.e. scratchplates.
18.
I did the same with a fretless neck and a P-Bass I have. I ended up having to shift the bridge forward a bit as the neck was a stingray-style, thereby a bit of an uneven fit in the neck pocket. It did, however, have a beautiful unlined ebony board on a great neck. Aaaaaand... I'm selling it. I can send you pics if you want? £40?
Hmm, yeah - bung me a PM! But I'm still curious as to whether this is possible with a MM Pbass neck fitting to a Squier Pbass. Another point being that I was going for an all black look as much as possible...
19. Anyone...?
20. As there's probably no current way that I can afford an unlined fretless Fender Precision, I'm just wondering whether it may be possible to create a Frankenfretless. Here's what I'm thinking is needed in terms of ingredients: Cheap Pbass - possibly a Squier Affinity (black). Mighty Mite unlined ebony neck Wizard pups Replacement pickguard (black) So I have a couple of questions: - Will a Mighty Mite neck will easily plonk down into the Affinity, along with it's tuning machines? - Is it more practical to import the neck from Mighty Mite in the US? Like I said, this is just a feeler to see whether the whole idea is practical...

Oh Yes!

Are you sure they're not getting designs from Liberace via ouija board...?
22. 'Repo Man' 'Solaris' (the modern version) 'Forbidden Planet' - waaaaay ahead of it's time. 'The Day The Earth Stood Still' 'Dirty Harry'
23. Play how you like, learn to play in a way that suits your needs, and have fun. Surely that's all that matters at the end of the day (before this thread gets locked...)...?
24. The best rule of thumb then is to use what suits you right now and gets the job done Adding more to your skill set - if you feel the need for it - can come later over time.
