1. What about Wizard Pickups? They make Jazz pups in several different flavours.
2. Guitar Aid in London say 40 quid plus.
3. Ditto what Waynepunkdude posted - except make mine black with a tort pickguard. Or (or plus) an Eccleshall 335.
4. Sometimes a bit of splashing about with the cash can have it's up side. I decided to treat myself a bit and replace bits on my Fender Jazz fretless, as it's 20 years old and was pretty beaten up by the previous owner. It's black with a nicely yellowed neck, but the white pickguard was a mess and the screws holding it in place were all dull and tarnished. So I put on a new pickguard - a black one - and replaced all the screws with shiny new ones. Now it looks sexy as hell Not that this broke the bank, but sometimes spending a bit on the little things makes a lot of difference to the aesthetics!
5. I have 'Grand Guignol' by Naked City. Not sure if I've ever really taken to it, but it's way better than the stuff in that clip
6. Isn't this the fast version of 'Jazz Odyssey'?
7. There's a very good version of Poptones from a John Peel session on YouTube.
8. Back in 1988 when I was learning to play, this Dag Nasty song was a trial and then a pleasure once I got the hang of it. Still really enjoy playing it now too! I think is when I finally got the hang of playing bass.
9.
+1 Having heard someone playing a squier p special at a jam session and finding out it was as bought with original PU's I decided to take a punt on one. 180 quid delivered and was totally playable straight out of the box. If I need an extra bass in an odd tuning or whatever this will be perfect for the job. Better than I expected.
I've been thinking for a while now about getting one, and the responses here about it are pushing more towards doing so! Awhile back I saw a black/pewter-like grey (one which looked rather nice) being played and was impressed.
10. Yep, Kim Deal has done some really good stuff. Nice solid bass lines.
11.
Many a happy memory of the Bierkeller. I never saw The Babysitters but I saw Buttz's next band Last of The Teenage Idols and again never saw the Cherry Bombz but I saw Andy & Nasty in Hanoi and several other bands (Cheap N Nasty, Demolition 23....). Great days!
I've yet to see Hanoi Rocks. Last time they were in London I only found out whilst queueing at a gig on the same night. Would love to see them. The Babysitters are easily one of my all-time favourite bands. First time I saw them it was just Buttz on stage and I thought it was a standup routine instead of a band. Then the roadies came on, dressed as babies. And the stage backdrop was a giant pair of Y-fronts. After searching for many months I tracked down and excerpt of the video they made for their so-called 'Japanese Tour' - you can see it here...
12. Yeah, I seem to remember that happening after we'd ordered our tickets, and not being too chuffed about it. I remember a mate of mine spending the whole gig frowning and trying to get a refund for the programme he'd bought
13.
I was into them from the first couple of indie singles so about a year after the name change. I don't reckon I play their stuff more than twice a year now (although I saw the reformed band a handful of times from 2002-9) but it was a big appeal as to why I got playing. I liked the bass lines in old tv shows too & my parents records had some great players on them but it was that scene that finally kick started it for me.
I saw The Queer Boys in 1986, at the Bierkeller in Bristol, supporting The Babysitters and The Cherry Bombz. They got heckled alot and so one of the band announced there and then that they were changing their name to The Quireboys in order to (and I quote) 'stop everyone calling us p**fs'...
14.
how about nomeansno wayne ? i love that tight drum/bass hardcore ..
Oh yeah, definitely! I've seen them a few times and they're amazingly tight as a band. Funny too. In 1988, before I knew who they were, I was at a comics convention with a mate of mine in London, and we saw an 'old guy' walking around in a NoMeansNo t-shirt. Fast forward to a month later and we see the band for the first time and the 'old guy' was none other than the bass player!
15.
Nasty Nasty - 999 (Don't know who the bass player was in 999, can anyone enlighten me ?)
Jon Watson, I think.
16. I remember seeing The Quireboys when they were The Queer Boys.
17. Yep, I remember 'London Calling' registering on my bass radar when I was a kid. As well as 'Peaches' by The Stranglers. And the fuzzy raw sounding bass on Discharge's first album (I heard that at youth club when I was 13 - completely blew me away)...
18. I can remember liking the theme tune to 'Space 1999' alot, especially the bass. What actually convinced me to try and play the bass was Bauhaus, because at the time (1986) I was a refugee from heavy metal and I hadn't heard a fretless before. That said, I didn't take up playing the bass until 1988 - the first tunes I learnt being 'Hurry Up Harry' (Sham 69) and 'Warriors of Henghis Khan' (Bad News)...
19. GAK have them.
20. I'm hoping to order one from them soonish. The only reason I'd even heard of them is because they were mentioned here at Basschat, so it's always good to know what others recommend.
21. What about the Squier Standard P-Bass Special? Are they any good? I saw an all-black/pewter-like one a few months ago. And are there any guesses as to whether the Squier CV 60's Jazz will be released in something other than white?
22. I'll try to come to your London gig. I saw KISS in (I think) 1983, so I'll see if my memory will allow me to make comparisons
23. Yep, I'd agree with you about Stan Stammers.
24. Perhaps it may be better just to have - if one doesn't exist already - a thread dedicated to bass players who might not be known to others and may be of interest? No-one is ever going to agree on who is better or best or worst because it's wildly subjective.
