1. I play everything by ear, so I wouldn't know exactly. Try listening to Mad Professor & Jah Shaka (either their own stuff or what they've co-operated on). That might help - lots of it can be found on YouTube.
2. Leslie Langston (she was the original bass player for Throwing Muses). Also, Rob Wright (of NoMeansNo)
3. That's the one - very nice! Should've guessed it was the same one that Hooky has.
4. Have you had any experience of playing dub bass lines? It sounds like that sort of style.
5. Well, I've heard of 'The Rail' so I guess this is 'The Shovel'...
6.
Now I've said that, I think he's also using an Epiphone Jack Casady occasionally:
Aha - it's something like that Epiphone but all-black. Wasn't sure if was hollow-bodied or not...
7. Fishbone's Norwood Fisher.
8.
I thought he was Gibson Thunderbirds all the way these days?
Aha - wasn't sure as I've never seen it clearly.
9.
Under-rated: Simon Gallup.
I'd agree with that too. Had an influence on me, I must say. I really like the chunky bass he's been playing for a fair few years now, but don't know what make it is.
10. 01. Essexbasscat 02. Lonestar. Fender 4string Jazz Pervy TL5 Markbass2x10 (not very exciting but they're all I have!) 03. molan - Celinder J4 Update, Zon VB4, Spector NS5XL, Epifani Ul510, Bergantio AE1x12's, who knows what else. . . 04. 11. The bass player from Desmond Dekker's band once borrowed my old cheapy fretless bass for a gig when I was at poly'. He actually quite liked it and was a nice bloke in general.
12. If you can find an older Wesley bass going cheap, that might be a better option. I have one (it's the pink thing in my avatar) that I stripped back to the wood and generally tinkered with and it's not all that bad. It does feel a bit light and skinny, but then again so did my old Aria Pro II
13. I think it's a shame if anyone you admire dies. Perhaps musicians dying just taps into you more if you're a musician too. Quite alot of bands I like seem to have a quite high mortality rate. Stiv Bator (Lords of the New Church), Razzle (Hanoi Rocks), Johnny Thunders (The New York Dolls), to name but a few. The comedian Denis Leary has done some funny stuff about the wrong musicians dying: 'Every time you hear about some famous guy overdosing on drugs, it's always some really talented guy. It's always like Len Bias, or Janis Joplin, or Jimi Hendrix, or John Belushi. You know what I mean? The people you wanna have overdose on drugs never would! Like Motley Crue would never f*cking overdose man, never! ' 'Stevie Ray Vaughan is dead, and we can't get Jon Bon Jovi onto a f*cking helicopter!'
14.
I'd be delighted to poke my nose in, but as a rank newbie I don't think I'll be doing much if any playing.
Don't worry about that - it'll be a laugh. I've been playing bass for yonks but I don't have anything fancy in my repetoire - I prefer the opposite in fact
15. Seems rather tasty!
16.
Also, I find the big Dunlop triangles easier to use on bass rather than those little teardrop ones you useually see everywhere.
I used to use those, but found them a bit knackering after playing for an hour or more.
17.
Spray the pot with switch cleaner,or a quick fix WD 40,no more crackles.
Do you mean the exterior of the pot?
18. I use Dunlop 'Tortex' .88mm picks. More often than not I play the sort of stuff you're playing. Mind you, I imagine you've got stronger fingers than me, so something a little more chunky might suit you better. But it might effect the snappiness of the sound - depends on if it's snappy or chunky post hardcore/punk
19. Best thing to do to start with I reckon is to state what sort of stuff you will do. Set things in stone. Then if things get up and rolling then you'd have to see whether you could handle more customised stuff. It's always better to dictate from the get-go what you can do, otherwise you'll get all sorts of requests for things that could end up being a pain in the arse!
20. Damn - if I didn't have a XS Pbass on it's way to me I would've bought this one instead!
21. Add me to the list. Not sure what I'll be bringing yet. Either the SX I have on it's way, or for that obscureish retro feel a Westone Spectrum DX. If no-one's bringing a fretless and someone wants a go on one, I can bring my Fender Jazz instead.
22. Except more booze...?
23. One bloke I think is good is Brian Gibson, the bass player from Lightning Bolt. Not for any real technical reasons, but just because he's done things I'd not heard of before and has come up with some really good riffs. It's the latter point which I like the most. You do get people going on about the complexities of his riffs, but IMHO they're not complex - fiddly perhaps at times, but more often that not they're just good chunky sounds. For those techies amongst you, he does have a bit of an odd bass setup. According to Wikipedia (and I've read this elsewhere) 'Gibson plays his bass guitar tuned to cello standard tuning, in intervals of fifths (C G D A), using a banjo string for the high A. He used this four-string setup for several years, but has recently been seen using a five-string setup, tuned to C G D A E, with banjo strings for the A and E. Gibson also uses several effects pedals, including overdrive pedals, an octaver, a delay pedal, and a whammy pedal (pitch shifter).' As for anyone being overrated, such stuff doesn't interest me. I got past trying to make such analyses when I was into heavy metal and got into millions of circular arguments about who played the best solos...
24. Thanks for that! In the end I found that one wire leading from the bridge pup was stuck in the channel leading to the electronics well. I think the bloke who had it before me must've done something weird with the whole bass (judging just by the exterior when I got my hands on it. Anyway, after much fiddling about, I got the wire out and soldered it to one of the pots and now everything works! And it sounds very nice indeed There is a slight amount of noise, and some crackling from the neck volume pot when the control is rotated. I guess I should put that down to it's age (and the manhandling it's been through)?
25. How about these Gotoh black machine heads? I'm also thinking of getting some but I don't know if they'll the SX Pbass I have coming my way soon...
